Street photography is an art that requires a good eye, a little discretion, and a camera that you can take anywhere. There's a saying in photography that the best camera is the one you have on you, but while your smartphone can capture interesting moments in a pinch, a dedicated camera can take your street photos to the next level. A good street photography camera has to be lightweight and portable, have easy-to-adjust settings, and have a relatively fast lens and effective autofocus to capture fleeting moments. For those reasons, we've geared our list toward premium point-and-shoots. Depending on your needs and preferences, an interchangeable-lens mirrorless camera can also fit the bill, especially when paired with a small fast prime lens, so we've included some top mirrorless options.

Below you'll find our recommendations for the best cameras for street photography to buy, narrowed down from over 75 cameras that we've bought and tested. If you're interested in urban landscape photography, you might also want to check out our picks for the best cameras for landscape photography. Or, if you want to take street photos while traveling, you can check out our recommendations for the best travel cameras or the best compact cameras.

Fujifilm's X100 series has long been a favorite among enthusiasts and street photographers, and the latest iteration improves upon an already-excellent formula to create one of the best premium point-and-shoots on the market. The Fujifilm X100V may not be the most compact option, but Fuji has managed to pack in just about everything you'd want in a portable carry-around camera. Built around a tried-and-true 26MP crop sensor, the camera evokes the classic rangefinder cameras favored by street photography legends of the past. Beyond looking the part, it also has a solid AF system and takes stunning photos straight out of the camera.

Best of all is its unique hybrid viewfinder which can toggle between an optical rangefinder for an unfiltered view of your subjects or a high-res electronic viewfinder, which gives you a real-time preview of how your image will look. The built-in lens is also an improvement on that of its predecessor, the Fujifilm X100F, and its 35mm full-frame equivalent focal length is super well-suited to a range of photo styles, from wide-angle close-ups to busier scenes. Plus, dedicated exposure dials let you easily change settings on the fly, all of which make this one of the top street photography cameras for enthusiasts.

The RICOH GR III was made for street photographers, and if you're looking for something that is truly pocketable, this is the camera to get. Its minimalist design isn't nearly as nice to look at as the sleek Fujifilm X100V—you won't find a viewfinder or tilting screen here, either—but its small, unassuming form factor can't be beaten for discretion and portability. Like the Fuji, it also uses a large APS-C sensor, so you get excellent image quality and fair performance even in low light.

While it doesn't have the fastest or most accurate autofocus, it does come with a unique 'Snap Focus' feature that's ideal for street shooting. It allows you to quickly full-press the shutter and 'snap' the focus to a pre-set distance, which is super convenient for quick and discreet shots when you can gauge the distance to your subject. The wide-angle 28mm-equivalent focal length is also a common one for street photography, but if you prefer a more standard field of view, you can also buy the RICOH GR IIIx variant, which comes with a 40mm-equivalent lens at a slightly higher price.

In most cases, the best budget camera for street photos is going to be the camera you've already got on you: your smartphone. If you want to step up from your phone, the Panasonic LUMIX LX100 II is the cheapest new compact option we recommend. If it's still a little out of your price range, you can also look into older models like the original LX100 or the RICOH GR II.

Like the Fujifilm X100V, the Panasonic has dedicated exposure dials to give you more control over settings without diving into menus. Inside is a Micro Four Thirds sensor, smaller than either the Fuji or the RICOH GR III, but instead of using the full sensor, the camera has a smaller lens opening that allows you to change the aspect ratio of your photos without affecting the field of view. You'll still get great image quality out of it, and while it isn't as compact as the GR III, it has a viewfinder, which comes in handy on sunny days, as well as a zoom lens to give you a bit more flexibility with framing.

While you can't beat compact cameras for portability, some people may prefer the versatility of an interchangeable-lens camera. Thankfully, there are some excellent mirrorless options that still come in relatively portable form factors, and the best one we've tested for street photography is the Fujifilm X-Pro3. Like the Fujifilm X100V, it has a hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder offset from the center of the body, and it uses the same high-resolution APS-C sensor, so you'll get the same great image quality out of it, but with the option to use different lenses and focal lengths.

It's also uniquely designed with a reverse-tilting screen to encourage you not to rely on the camera's screen and engage more with your subjects, making it a great fit for the intrepid street photographer. It's also got a sturdy, weather-sealed body along with dual SD card slots for expanded memory or to keep a live backup of your work. Though it isn't as portable, the hybrid viewfinder and similar Fuji handling, complete with dedicated exposure dials, make this a fantastic interchangeable-lens alternative to the X100V.

If it wasn't already clear, Fujifilm cameras are some of the best on the market for street photography, thanks to their portable designs and retro-inspired enthusiast-oriented designs. As far as mid-range mirrorless options go, the Fujifilm X-T30 II has a lot to love about it. It has a super portable lightweight body, and though it can feel more cramped than the Fujifilm X-Pro3, it still has Fuji's dedicated-dial layout that makes it easy to adjust settings on the go. Plus, you get a more traditional tilting screen with this model.

Like the other Fujifilm cameras mentioned here, it uses the same sensor, meaning image quality is comparable. However, it has a slower max burst rate and shooting speed than the X-Pro3 and doesn't have any weather-sealing. Still, if you like Fujifilm's old-school approach to design but prefer something a bit more conventional and portable, this is the camera for you.

Last but not least is the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV, which is one of the best budget mirrorless cameras we've tested. It uses a Micro Four Thirds sensor, so it isn't as well-suited to low-light settings as APS-C options like the Fujifilm X-Pro3 or the Fujifilm X-T30 II. But that smaller sensor makes it incredibly portable, plus it uses smaller Micro Four Thirds lenses, making it a good choice if you want portability but still want the versatility of switching out different lenses.

On top of that, it's got a great in-body image stabilization system, meaning you can get clear handheld shots at slower shutter speeds. The ergonomics on this thing are solid, especially for such a small camera. It doesn't have the most reliable autofocus system, and build quality isn't quite as good as pricier models. But if you're looking for a portable camera kit, the Micro Four Thirds system is a great choice that won't break the bank.

              Notable Mentions

              • Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II: The Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II is a good mid-range point-and-shoot for street photography. Unlike the RICOH GR III, it uses a zoom lens and has a small pop-up EVF, but the image quality is worse because of its smaller sensor. See our review
              • Fujifilm X-T4: The Fujifilm X-T4 delivers similar image quality and has an even better battery life than the Fujifilm X-Pro3. It's a great hybrid option for those interested in video and stills. However, it's less portable and doesn't have the X-Pro3's unique hybrid viewfinder. See our review
              • Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III: The Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III is a great mid-range interchangeable lens camera with a Micro Four Thirds sensor. Unlike the Fujifilm X-T30 II, it features in-body image stabilization and weather-sealing. However, it has a shorter battery life and less reliable autofocus. See our review
              • Sony α6400: The Sony α6400 is an excellent mid-range interchangeable-lens option. It has a longer battery life than the Fujifilm X-T30 II, but it isn't quite as portable, and it doesn't handle as well, with a hard-to-navigate menu system. See our review
              • Sony α7C: The Sony α7C is a good option if you want a full-frame mirrorless camera that's still relatively compact. However, it doesn't have as many physical control dials as the Fujifilm X-Pro3. Also, it only has a small electronic viewfinder. See our review
              • Sony RX100 VII: The Sony RX100 VII is a high-end point-and-shoot that's even more compact than the Fujifilm X100V and features a zoom lens. That said, it only has a tiny pop-up EVF, and its image quality and noise handling are worse due to its smaller sensor. See our review

Top 10 cameras for street photography

            2. What is the best camera for street photography?

              – It is a much-debated topic, one that will, no doubt, continue to divide opinion for many years to come.

              ─── by Edward Clay, September 8, 2022

To capture a great ‘street’ photograph one often must be quick, discreet, and perceptive. We’ve therefore taken a number of factors into account such as size, portability, speed, and, where applicable, sensor size, and selected what we believe are the top 10 cameras, (both digital and analog) for street photography.

It’s also important to note that lenses are a key element in any type of photography, and for the purpose of this article, we have focused solely on the camera body itself (though in some cases this includes a built-in lens).

              1. Leica M6

No other camera brand is as synonymous with street photography as Leica. The German company was the inventor of the 35mm camera, and their early creations helped shape the very foundations of the genre, utilized by everyone from Henri Cartier Bresson to Ernst Haas. Originally released in the mid-1980s, the M6 is one of its most iconic creations, a hand-constructed, fully mechanical rangefinder with a built-in lightmeter and shutter speeds of 1/1000 of a second to one second. Furthermore, it is compatible with almost every one of Leica’s excellent M-range lenses, giving the user a wide range of great options. An iconic combination of function and form, that remains a favorite of some of the greatest street photographers of our time including, Bruce Gilden, and will likely stay that way for some time.

              – Learn more via the Leica website.

              2. Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II

An excellent, compact all-rounder from Canon that packs a proverbial punch that belies its diminutive size. The fast 5X zoom lens features a focal range of 24-120mm, and even at full zoom the  f/1.8 aperture only drops to f/2.8, making capturing dynamic ‘street’ imagery a breeze. What’s more, the control ring is customizable, so you can set it to your preferred function, and the 1-inch sensor offers far superior image quality compared with most point-and-shoot cameras.

              – Learn more via the Canon website.

              3. Fujifilm X100V

A modern mirrorless camera that pays tribute to the street photography cameras of old, the X100V from Fujifilm, features dial-based controls that offer the intuitive feel of 35mm cameras, whilst the hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder rivals the best iterations on any mirrorless camera on the market. If you’re looking for a variety of range control, then this isn’t for you, but the fixed focal lens of 23mm (equivalent) f/2, boasts incredible sharpness, and combined with the high-quality sensor, allows for the capturing of super-quality images (plus the minimal, vintage-inspired look isn’t too bad either!)

              – Learn more via the Fujifilm website.

              4. Olympus OM1

It might be 5 decades old, but the Olympus OM1 remains a cult favorite among analog street photographers thanks to its simplicity, compact size, and relative affordability. It features a built-in light meter, and a large, bright viewfinder, plus is compatible with a wide variety of Zuiko lenses, encompassing some excellent options and a range of focal lengths.

              – Learn more via the Olympus website.

              5. Leica M11

Arguably the finest street photography camera on the market, Leica’s M11 delivers in all areas with aplomb! It features a 60MP full-frame sensor (which is actually a ‘triple-resolution’ sensor, that allows you to reduce pixels when not required and thus save both on card space and processing power), and a burst rate of 4.5fps. In trademark Leica style it is lightweight, small, and beautifully designed, plus it’s the first M-range camera to feature a built-in USB port, allowing users to charge it with a power bank when they’re on the move. Inevitably, it’s expensive, and the rangefinder focusing might take some time to get used to for those not accustomed to it, but if you have the money, there are few, if any, better options available.

              – Learn more via the Leica website.

              6. Ricoh GR21

The GR21 from Ricoh is a cult favorite amongst street photographers( including one of the genre’s most iconic proponents, Daido Moriyama), and for good reason. Though similar in appearance to the also-excellent, previous GR 35mm incarnations, what sets it apart is the 21 mm f/3.5 lens, (which makes it the only 35mm compact camera with an ultra wide-angle 21mm lens in existence) that opens up a world of compositional possibilities.
However, for those who prefer to shoot digital, the Ricoh GR III is a great option, its compact size, effective shake reduction system, super-fast operation, and excellent 28mm equivalent F2.8 lens, make it perfect for capturing dynamic street snaps.

              7. Panasonic Lumix LX100 II

An excellent compact camera with a multi-aspect four-thirds sensor that allows users to switch between different aspect ratios, and thus experiment with different compositions. The Lumix LX100 II from Panasonic boasts a considerably larger sensor than most rival compact cameras and, combined with the 24-75mm (a perfect focal range for street photography of all styles) Leica lens, which has a maximum aperture of f/1.7, makes capturing sharp imagery with shallow depth of field, a piece of cake.

              8. Sony A7 iii

It might not be as compact as some of the others on the list, but the Sony A7 iii, is a versatile mirrorless camera that is great for a variety of situations, including capturing ‘street’ shots. It’s light and small when compared with DSLRs, and the full-frame sensor allows for excellent image quality even in low light. The autofocus is highly sophisticated, whilst the tilting LCD screen is a handy feature for when you need to use creative angles (such as shooting from waist level). It’s also compatible with a wide range of lenses, both from Sony and Sigma.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for something a little more compact, try the Sony RX100 VII i, a super small and lightweight point and shoot with a 24-200mm equivalent Zeiss-engineered lens, and quick and sophisticated AF, that allows for super-dynamic shooting.

              9. Nikon Z fc

Vintage-style meets modernity with this compact mirrorless camera from Nikon. The handy size, solid specifications which include a 20.9MP APS-C CMOS sensor, and an 11fps burst rate, as well as the stylish design, make this a great all-rounder, and though Nikon’s Z-range of lenses is relatively new, and thus limited, it won’t stay that way for too long!

              10. Leica M10 Monochrom

For lovers of monochrome, analog street photography, the Leica 10 is the ultimate tool, a truly unique camera that only allows the user to shoot in black and white. The benefits of this are significant. Instead of capturing images using a color filter array (CFA) over the sensor, the Monochrom cameras record black & white images directly, leading to improved tonality, and detail, higher sensitivity, and minimal noise. What’s more, the M10 Monochrom features a newly-developed sensor with an ISO range of 160 to 100,000, affording incredible detail and quality, plus in typical Leica fashion, the design is truly stunning!

There is, of course, no right answer to the question we posed at the beginning of this article. Each photographer will have their own preferences: they may prefer analog to digital; autofocus to manual; rangefinder to SLR. Furthermore, keeping the list to just 10 was no easy task, there were numerous other models that could easily have been included.

However, based on our experience, knowledge, and considerable research, we believe that each of the 10 cameras we selected ticks the key boxes when it comes to street photography.

The proposed rating is intended only to give an idea of the capabilities and features of a particular camera. There is no single answer to the question of which video camera is better for video surveillance at home or on the street. Digital cameras allow you to create a network of several devices without using a video switcher, but depend on the state of the Internet connection and transmit the image with a slight delay. Another disadvantage is the high cost. Analog ones are cheaper, transmit the image without delay, but they have more complicated settings and shooting resolution is limited. The choice depends on each specific case, the tasks to be solved and the equipment available.
