10 easy photo poses for boys to help you take great pictures

In today’s post: Get better photos with these 10 photo poses for boys.

Whether you’re an aspiring photographer or a parent who wants to take better photos of her own kids, posing is an important part of taking good pictures. Some people assume their subject can pose themselves or just act “natural” during a photo shoot. However, that’s harder said than done. Most people who are being photographed feel a little (or a lot) uncomfortable, and if your subject feels awkward, chances are they will look awkward in the photos. Some guidance and a few pose suggestions will go along way toward ensuring the pictures turn out great. So today I’m sharing 10 go-to photo poses for boys.

Click here for more photo poses for girls.

Hey, I’m not a professional photographer, but I do like to take pictures. I always tell people that the best way to get really great photos is to hire a pro. But there are things even beginners can to do help improve their photos, and that’s what my photography posts are here for!

10 photo poses for boys: Standing

Photo pose #1: Basic standing pose, hands in pockets. Standing poses are great! They don’t require any props or any special setup so you can take them anywhere. There are two main things to remember. First, your subject will generally look more natural and relaxed if most of his weight is on one foot with the other leg slightly bent. If he stands with both legs straight and his weight centered between them he may look stiff. Second, you usually need to do something with his hands so they’re not just hanging at his sides. I like the look of one hand in a pocket:

Both hands in pockets can work too. Just be sure he doesn’t shove his hands too deeply in the pockets – he can even just hook one thumb in a front or back pocket. Note that the weight is shifted to one leg in the photos below:

You can even ask your subject to cross one leg in front of the other.

For all of the photos above, I stood on a stool so that I was above my subject’s eye level. This is generally a flattering angle because it slims the face and makes the eyes look a little bigger. But you can experiment with shooting from slightly below as well:

This can look cool when the setting sun is just behind your subject.

Anytime you try a new pose, be sure to take a full body shot, a half body shot, and some closeups. That way you can get lots of different looking photos from just one pose.

Photo Pose #2: Standing + props. One way to get some variety in your standing photos is to use a prop, like a jacket thrown over one shoulder:

You can also have your subject hold an item that represents his hobby, like a basketball or musical instrument.

You can also vary the lighting conditions, the angle you shoot from, and whether the subject is looking at the camera or looking away.

Photo Pose #3: Standing + wall. Positioning your subject near a wall is another way to change up the basic standing pose. Asking your subject to lean up against the wall with give him a relaxed stance.

He can stand with his back to the wall, or with one shoulder touching the wall.

Having him cross his arms is another way to vary the positioning a bit.

Be sure to get a closeup! A brick wall makes a pretty background, especially when it’s blurred out a bit. Read: how to blur the background in your photos

Photo Poses for Boys: Sitting

Photo Pose #4: Sitting in a chair. If can be fun to bring along a small chair when you’re taking photos. I usually ask boys to sit backwards on the chair. They can rest their arms along the back of the chair for a relaxed position.

Of course, you can also have your subject sit forward on the chair. Ask him to cross one ankle over the other knee:

If you don’t have a chair, try taking pictures with your subject sitting on a bench instead:

Remember to walk around your subject and take photos from different angles. Changing where you stand in relation to the subject can drastically change the finished photo.

Photo Pose #5: Sitting on a stairs. I always looks for stairs when I’m taking pictures because it’s really easy to position people on them. Have you subject sit on a low step and lean forward on his knees for a dynamic pose:

If your subject is on a flight of stairs, he can lean back to rest of the step behind him, or forward on his knees. Try having him put his feet on different steps to keep the photo from looking too posed.

Photo Pose #6: Sitting on a low object. If there are no chairs, benches, or stairs handy, look for other low objects your subject can sit on. Try crouching down to take photos from his eye level (examples above) and standing up to take photos from above (examples below).

Remember to zoom in and out!

Photo Pose #7: Sitting against a wall. Just like with standing photos, having your subject lean against a wall helps him look very relaxed and natural in a sitting photo. I usually ask my subject to sit with one or both knees up and then rest his arms on his knees. You can take photos from straight on, at his eye level or above…

…or take photos from one side.

He doesn’t actually have to lean against the wall the whole time – you can ask him to lean forward to vary the look of the photo.

Photo Pose #8: Sitting on the ground. If you shoot from above while your subject is sitting on the ground, you can usually get a uniform background of grass. Green grass looks pretty, especially when blurred, and this is an easy pose to do in your own backyard if you don’t want to go hunting for scenic locations.

I asked my subject here to put one knee up and then lean back on the other arm for a relaxed pose.

Remember the close ups!

Photo Poses for Boy: Other

Photo Pose #9: Crouched down. This is another really easy pose you can do just about anywhere. Just ask your subject to crouch down and lean forward slightly with his elbows on his knees. Take the photo from slightly above to make sure you get nice open eyes even while he’s smiling.

Photo Pose #10: Laying down on grass. For a very relaxed pose, ask your subject to lay down on the grass. He can lay on his side, with his fist supporting his head (note that you will need to be quite low to the ground to take this shot):

Or my favorite on-the-ground pose is to have your subject lie down on his back with his hands behind his head. You will need to be on a chair or step stool near the top of his head, and then lean over so you can shoot straight down.

how successful a couple will be in the frame

Love Story is a shooting that allows capturing bright and unforgettable moments in the relationship of lovers. Love Story is often held before the wedding, on an anniversary or memorable date. A couple's photo session should be unforgettable and perfect. But its quality depends on a huge number of aspects: the photographer, the venue, the mood of the lovers and the ability to pose correctly in front of the camera.

How to prepare and choose a location for a photo shoot

The basis of every romantic couple photo shoot is the setting. Shooting should be relaxed and easy. The guy and the girl initially need to tune in to a pleasant mood and liberate themselves in the frame. If the photographer sees that one of the lovers feels constrained or uncomfortable, then it is necessary to talk to the model or defuse the situation.

Don't forget about clothes. Very often, lovers wear things of the same color and tone. But such a decision often leads to the fact that people begin to merge into the frame. A good option is to create complementary looks, for example, if the girl is wearing a red dress, then it is better to dress the guy in a brown suit and complement it with a matching red shirt or bow tie. Be sure to choose similar styles. Tracksuit and evening dress - a bad combination.

One of the most important facts is the choice of location for shooting. It may vary depending on the time of year. For example, for outdoor photos, the period of late spring and early autumn will go, as these are the most favorable seasons. Shooting in a studio or in a beautiful shopping center, coffee shops are versatile options that can be used at any time of the year.

Outdoor photo shoot for two in winter

This time of year is not very suitable for outdoor photography. In warm outerwear, people look too obese and large in the frame. If you still decide on it, then the photo session of two lovers should take place in snowy and not very cold weather. It is better to wear a light coat or a tight-fitting parka and complement the look with bright accessories: a scarf, a hat, mittens that will match in color.

It is recommended to choose the most snowy location, it can be the streets of a busy city, a picturesque park or a forest. Shooting on a frozen pond is also considered a very unusual and interesting idea, but you should be careful not to go out on the ice if you are not sure of its strength.

Love story photography in spring

Spring is a period of freshness and lightness. The nature around comes to life and it can be captured in photographs. It is better to plan romantic spring photo shoots in the second half of the season, when the rest of the snow has already melted, the trees begin to turn green, and the temperature rises to a comfortable level. It is better to choose locations associated with nature and focus on flowers, the beauty of the surrounding world. This will help refresh your photos. A great solution would be to use a bouquet of flowers as an accessory for shooting, or decorate the girl's head with a small neat wreath.

If the couple prefers shooting in the city, it is better to arrange a photo shoot after a light spring rain. The asphalt of roads and sidewalks will take on an unusual black color that will contrast with the greenery of the trees. Also, spring is a great time to play with light, cloudy weather gives way to sunny bright highlights, which create unusual and romantic images.

Love story shooting in summer

Summer is the universal season of the year. At this time, you can create absolutely any photos, but it is better to focus on the warmth and freshness of this season. For example, replace standard parks and gardens with a beach location or a lakeside location. If desired, the shooting is transferred to the water or a rented small boat, where you can take a fabulous shot at sunset.

The main caution for filming in the summer is not to organize the process in hot weather. This threatens with heatstroke or sunstroke. It is better to set the time in the morning or after sunset. There are a huge number of ideas for shooting in the summer: a photo shoot in a meadow with an imitation of a picnic, in a botanical garden, in a mountain landscape or a beautiful city square. It all depends on the imagination of the photographer and the lovers.

Shooting a love story in autumn

Couples in love often choose this time of year for a photo shoot. It is better to organize shooting in the first half of the season, while the trees begin to turn yellow and the leaves gradually fall off, and the rains do not flood the streets. This is the golden period when romantic and atmospheric images are created or, on the contrary, playful photosets are taken in raincoats.

Even if the weather suddenly deteriorated on the appointed day, you should not be upset. In light rain, it is possible to take original pictures with umbrellas. A bright accessory will add color to the photo and help to make the right accent. A photo session in the fall for two will allow you to create magical warm shots that will convey the purity of the feelings of lovers.

Night shooting love story

Evening time of the day brings a special atmosphere of unity and tranquility to photographs. The most popular idea for a night photo shoot is to create a contrasting neon environment. You need to find bright light sources, as they create pleasant light accents. In such a stylist, it is important to find a location with a lot of bright and colorful lights. The frame where the lovers stand under a bright lantern in the evening will also look very romantic and touching.

Poses for taking photos together

Poses for romantic photo shoots of a couple play a key role, it will depend on them how successful the shooting will be. Sometimes a photo session leads to embarrassment for inexperienced models. In this case, the couple should at least first abandon staged shots and try to forget about the camera.

When thinking about poses for photography, you should pay attention to the following points:

  1. The most common mistake girls make is pressing their hands to the body. Because of this, the area between the elbow and the shoulder becomes wider, which apparently adds several kilograms of weight.
  2. Taking a picture of a kiss is a real challenge for an inexperienced couple. The girl and the guy strive to collide with their noses, which destroys all the beauty of the photo. Therefore, it is best to put the girl in the foreground when kissing, as they often have a neat and small nose.
  3. Try to maintain natural curves while posing. Otherwise, the model will look like a tin soldier.
  4. Choose clothes that will hide the excess, but emphasize the features of the figure. For example, voluminous dresses and stretched sweaters are suitable for very thin girls, but they will spoil the photo for girls with a plump figure.
  5. There is a universal pose for any full-length photograph that suits just about everyone. The couple should stand in a half turn in front of the camera, the girl comes to the fore and puts one leg forward a little. The guy should hug the companion by the waist, but not too close, the look is directed at her.

Photo Shoot Ideas

Once you've figured out the poses for a photo shoot with a guy, it's worth starting to work out the main idea of the shoot together. It is best to look at the material of famous photographers or look through magazines. Do not limit your imagination when coming up with ideas for a photo shoot, as this process can take place in different locations.

Outdoor photography

Outdoor photography offers a wide range of possibilities. A location on the shore of a lake or the sea will add freshness and lightness to photography. It is better to choose the time at sunset, during the so-called golden hour. During this period, you can get great romantic shots. If you wish, you can finish shooting in the water.

A bonfire will add an unusual atmosphere to photography. Such pictures are best taken in the evening, after sunset. A beach or a forest belt is ideal, it is better to take a bedding and a guitar with you, this will complement the composition.

Studio pair shooting

A large number of diverse studios are available for use. There are both very simple (background) options, and entire stylized locations in the interior of a bar or library. The cost varies depending on the type of studio. For general shooting, it is better to choose the medium options, for example, with a sofa, bed or a panoramic window.

It is very popular to shoot for themed holidays: New Year, Valentine's Day and so on.

Costume photography

Shooting in Victorian style or dedicated to the Feast of the Dead will allow you to reincarnate for a while and feel like actors. The idea is best implemented in a studio with wooden inserts and a fireplace or in an outdoor garden.

Thematic photography according to interests

So many hobbies, so many opportunities for pictures. For couples who love reading, photography in libraries, among bookshelves, is suitable. Game fans will love the location with arcade machines in specialized places or shopping malls.

For artists and couples who like to fool around, there is a place with paints and an easel. Together, lovers can smear each other with paint or just fool around.

Home photography for couples in love

At home, the most popular location is the kitchen.
