1. Find or Create the Ideal Photography Studio Space

If you’re just beginning your new photography business, you might need to set up a home photography studio on a budget at your house, create a professional studio, or rent a studio space.

A. Home or Basement (Rent-Free)
B. New space (Pro level)
C. Rent a space (Great for traveling and beginner photographers)

A. Advantages of a Home Photography Studio

  • Safety: Nowadays, people avoid working in public areas and spaces because of the pandemic. They want to avoid getting sick. Hence, building a home photo studio business is safer and has more advantages as working from home becomes more of a necessity.
  • Convenience: Building and maintaining a photo studio in your house cut the cost. Invest your money in high-quality equipment and worry less about paying rent, maintenance fees, commuting, and other expenses.
  • Grow your Business Faster: When you cut down the cost, you have the ability to invest not only in better gear but in a great marketing plan. For example, stay-at-home moms have the advantage of building a home business, creating product shots in their living room, and upload or share their work instantly on their website and Social Media! Also, with business tools like Canva Pro, you can create carousel posts or videos on Instagram, TikTok, Clubhouse, etc. in a matter of minutes.

B. Advantages of a Professional Photography Studio

  • Mass Production: The advantage of a professional studio over a home studio is the amount of work you can assign, either it is shooting portraits, fashion, or mass product shots.
  • More Equipment: In a professional studio you have the ability to add more lights and have different areas ready for different projects. You can install different backdrops, tables, sitting areas, and other concepts. You can also film projects as well.
  • Renting: Make more money on the days you have no photoshoots! Rent your space to other photographers and take advantage of your complete professional set at 100%.

C. Advantages of Renting a Photo Studio

  • On-The-Go Projects: If you are a freelance photographer based in New York and you have a new client in Los Angeles, you can rent a professional photo studio space nearby your client’s area. This way, you cut down the cost of not carrying all the equipment with you (since the studio will have all the necessary gear available), and make it easier for your client to work with you without any extra hustle.
  • Great for Beginners: When you are just beginning and you don’t have the proper equipment or camera gear but you have the skills, you should rent a photo studio space in order to create great images for your clients. Even if this method initially will be more costly, it will give you great feedback and beautiful images to add to your portfolio for future references, getting high-paying clients, and eventually build your own studio space as you grow your company.

A. Continuous Lights

Choosing the right photography indoor studio lights is essential for your business. Usually, Continuous lights are the way to go as you begin your journey in studio photography.

Most Continuous lights are adjustable LED lights with variations of warm/cool tones. They are called “continuous” because they produce light from the moment you switch them on.

Continuous lights are useful for both stills and video. They also help to adjust your scene, control the shadows, and observe how the light bounces back to your subject using the proper reflectors, etc.

Cameras and Lenses

You don’t need to get the most expensive camera and lenses to take good photos in your photo studio. What you need is to combine quality lenses with your main camera body and learn how to use lighting in your scene.

Basic Camera Setups for Photo Studio Q&A

Q: Do I need to buy a Full Frame camera?

A: APS-C cameras and lenses are less expensive than Full Frame cameras. You can buy an APS-C camera in the beginning and then, while you build your portfolio, you can upgrade to a Full Frame system.

Q: Which lenses are the best for a photography studio?

A: Small photo studio spaces will require a focal length between 35mm and 85mm. However, in a larger studio space, you will be able to use a 70-200mm.

Also, you can find lenses in the used market for half the price.

Q: Which lenses are good for portraits & headshots?

A: Good-looking portraits need at least a 23mm focal length on an APS-C camera body and 85mm on a full-frame body. Headshots, on the other hand, need 50mm on an APS-C camera and 85mm on a full-frame camera.

Q: I don’t have money to spend to get more than one lens, what should I get?

A: If you are just starting your photography studio, work with one lens. Use your camera’s Kit Lens or buy an all-around lens like a 24-105mm, 18-105mm, 18-135mm. Use a Speedlight flash with one of those lenses, to create stunning photos!

10. Computers and Printers

Process and store your images on a fast and reliable computer. To edit photos, make sure you buy a good CPU, fast SSD, and external storage to backup your images.

Loading files in Photo Editing Apps can take time if you use Hard Disk Drives. You can either buy a new SSD or M.2 flash drive that is 4x times faster than SSDs!

11. Photo Editing Software

Professional photographers use the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite.

The suite includes:

  • Lightroom
  • Lightroom Classic
  • Photoshop on desktop and iPad
  • 20GB of cloud storage (1TB available).

Get the Adobe Creative Cloud here.

12. Create your Website or Portfolio

Creating a website for your photography business is essential. Here are the steps on how to do it successfully:

  • Buy a Domain Name.
  • Sign up for FREE on Squarespace, one of the most popular website platforms in the world for photographers, creators, and eCommerce.
  • Hire a web designer on Fiverr.com to help you create a professional design!

Your Guide to Must-Have Photography Studio Equipment

From the location to the studio design, there are many ways to go about opening a photo studio. However, choosing the right photography studio equipment is non-negotiable. With so many options out there, it can be overwhelming to know which gear to buy first. With that in mind, here are the ten must-have accessories to help set up a photo studio.

And did you know that your photo studio can earn you passive income? It’s true! Once your photo studio is up and running, you can list it on Peerspace to start earning money from your space. Start hosting for free and help your local shutterbugs create, thrive, and follow their artistic passions.

Clamps

From clamping a sheet of foam core to a light stand to eliminate wrinkles on a model to hold up a background for the perfect shot, clamps are essential. You can find versatile pony clamps for one to two dollars at local home improvement stores. If all else fails, a bucket full of old-fashioned wooden clothespins will do the trick.

Tripods

To get started, you’ll need to invest in a sturdy tripod that can be versatile and handle trips outside of the studio. However, as you’re able to invest in your space, a small tabletop tripod is another piece of  photography studio equipment Especially, if you are trying to get a steady shot on a table.

Calibrated gray card

Whether you’re thinking of going with the Kodak 18 Percent Gray Card or the pro favorite of a Macbeth Color Checker, a grey card will do wonders. The trick is to shoot one reference shot for every lighting setup. Then remove the lighting card and shoot normally. When you go back to the post, you’ll be able to use these test shots to find the perfect color balance shots.

If you’re worried about the cost of all the equipment for your photo studio, we’ve got good news. You can recoup all your photography studio equipment investment by listing it on Peerspace.

Magic arms

Magic arms are designed to hold a camera in place. This gear consists of a simple “arm” with rotating wrists on each end. While not very complicated, magic arms help even the most novice photographer into someone who seems they can shoot for National Geographic next week.

Background light stands

In today’s age, you won’t find one photo studio without background light stands. For instance, AlienBees and Freedman’s both over some great background light stands that allow for simple and seamless background lighting for any sized studio. A great photographer will have the ability to throw light below seated subjects, behind industrial machines or even near the floor to produce a superb lighting effect that will make your subject pop.

Source: Peerspace

Monolights

Monolights are another piece of photography studio equipment often overlooked. And yet, all professional photographers use them. We suggest matching any monolight purchase with an extra-long power cable to ensure you can move around your subject and get that desired shot with ease.

Light meters

Many high-end camera bodies have some great ambient light settings, but any photo studio needs to have the ability to accurately measure a flash. This is essential when you’re using flash to fill backlit subjects. A solid light meter will allow you to be precise in flash exposures. Plus, who wants to measure the flash for half of the shoot anyways?

Focusing spotlight

Back in the ’80s and ’90s, photo studios could get by with just using natural window light. However, today’s photo studios must contain a wide assortment of lighting options. One, in particular, is a focusing spotlight that contains a strobe tube that offers a variable image circle. A true focusing has the ability to project everything from steel masks to actual transparencies onto a surface.

Other soft and hard lighting equipment

An ample supply is lighting is key to the success of your photo studio. You may be a portrait, product, boudoir, or fine art photographer (or, you may host these types of professionals when you’re ready to list your studio on Peerspace!) Either way, having a variety of lighting equipment means your studio shoots will go off without a hitch.

Some of the must-have lighting equipment to create hard light and soft light effects include ring lights, softboxes, china balls, and lighting umbrellas. And don’t forget your scrims and diffusers to filter and soften harsh light!

Gaffer tape

If you only purchase one type of tape for your studio, we recommend gaffer tape. While a bit more expensive and heavier, gaffer tape sticks to everything magically leaving no residue behind. You can use the tape to cover any metal finishes that may reflect back on your images, or simply to secure a background. The uses are endless making the investment worth the upfront cost.

Wireless remote triggers

When it comes to cables, the fewer on the floor the better. There are a number of great wireless remote triggers that will keep your floors cable-free, providing full functionality. Plus, some of the top-ranked triggers in the industry will allow you to work on multiple frequencies and coordinate your channel sections to trigger different groups of your own lights.

A final word on photography studio equipment

From equipment to some essential accessories, the real key to setting up a studio is getting the right photography studio equipment. Test out your gear, and see what works best for you in your space.

As you design your studio, consider what type of clientele you’re looking to attract. Along with this list of top-notch, must-have gear, you should consider the aesthetics. Do you want to create a serious space that caters to professionals only? Or would you like to add some quirky props and backdrops and attract influencers as well? Necessary equipment for a photo studio - Vtochku

To create high-quality pictures, it is not enough to have a multifaceted talent. Like any art, photography requires the use of special tools and fixtures, as well as a fully functional photo studio. Every photographer must face the question - what studio equipment to choose?

Photo studio kit includes both basic and optional equipment. When choosing photo equipment for a studio, you should pay attention to the quality characteristics of the equipment and not save on purchases. By investing in high-tech equipment for a photo studio, you can quickly recoup your costs and earn good money.

Naturally, shooting always starts with the camera, but each photographer has his own preferences in choosing this equipment for a photo studio, so it makes no sense to give advice in this direction.

Photo studio kit must include:

  • Studio light.
  • Photophones.
  • Flashes.
  • Reflectors.
  • Softboxes.
  • Photo umbrellas.
  • Reflectors.

A kit that includes these types of photo studio equipment will allow you to put into practice almost any idea.

Studio light

Lighting equipment for photography may be of a pulsed or continuous type. When using a constant source, the visibility of the picture is immediately visible, it should be chosen when photographing with SLR cameras and compact cameras. Impulse light sources will make shooting comfortable for the model and the photographer, while there is no need for high energy costs.

Photophones

This is an indispensable accessory for a photo studio, which allows you to create the necessary mood in the frame, emphasize the details and advantages of the subject being shot. Photophones are made of paper and fabric and range in size from compact small units to large formats used for photographing large objects.

Paper backdrops are a budget option that is part of a set of minimal equipment for a photo studio. This consumable comes in various colors and shades, and if necessary, it can be cut into pieces of the desired format. Fabric backgrounds are a reusable tool, and the presence of frames in the design allows you to perform the tension necessary for work.

With the help of backgrounds, you can make portraits and shoot small objects, and if you need to post-process photos, the presence of a photo background simplifies the process of editing the composition.

Flashes

This is an indispensable equipment for a photo studio and a device without which the work of a photographer of any level is impossible. The studio flash helps you take high-quality pictures, providing the necessary contrast even when the main light is bright. It is impossible to create an interesting play of shadows, shoot a dynamic plot, perform reportage or portrait shooting without using a flash.

The power of the devices should be chosen depending on the genre of photography:

  • 45 J for portraits;
  • 250-300 J for full body shots.

The presence of a power reserve will allow you to adjust the radiation intensity, flexibly setting the device during operation. When choosing which flash to purchase as a studio equipment, you should give preference to models with a power rating of 400 joules from the world's leading manufacturers - Bowens, Falcon, Mircopro, Rime Lite, etc.

Reflectors

This studio equipment is used to give pictures individuality and unusualness, obtaining specific effects. Especially for this, light discs are produced in various colors - white, black, silver, golden, etc.

Professional photographers value quality products - reflectors from Mircopro, Visico, Elinchrom and Hyundae Photonics will last a long time and help you shoot many original compositions.

Softboxes

Softboxes are used to produce soft diffused light. These devices have compact dimensions and are used in conjunction with various light sources. Benefits of using softboxes:

  1. Reduces the blurring of shadows and bumps.
  2. Light pattern softening.
  3. Eliminate unwanted reflections.

Photo Umbrellas

The most common accessory in the photography studio. Their use is justified in various types of shooting and ensures the saturation of shades and color depth in the frame. Folding and one-piece designs of various diameters, translucent or reflective types are an important accessory in any studio.

Reflectors

Various flash attachments are used to reflect the light flux, direct it at the required angle and create chiaroscuro gradations. Reflectors are divided into:

  • Scattering. Scatter light beams.
  • Parabolic. Direct the flow of light at the required angle.
  • Standard. Allows you to make the light directional, and the shadows are sharp.
  • Background. Evenly distribute light and provide background illumination.
  • Soft reflectors. Imitate sunlight, used in conjunction with honeycomb filters.

The presented list of equipment for a photo studio includes the necessary arsenal for various types of shooting, which will make the work of the photographer comfortable.

Set of small but essential accessories

Accessories:

  1. Flash attachments.
  2. Adapters and fasteners.
  3. Additional battery kit with charger.
  4. Radio synchronizers.
  5. Network cables, etc.

For a full-fledged outdoor event, you will need bags and covers for equipment that will fit everything for a photo studio organized outside of it. When choosing models and manufacturers, it is worth giving preference to functional and high-quality devices.

Equipment necessary for high-quality shooting

1. Creating the right lighting

2. Additional effects

3. How to decide on the choice of equipment

In our studio you can rent all the necessary equipment for a photo shoot in Novosibirsk. But what devices are needed in order to make the conceived shots perfect - we will figure it out in this article.

A huge benefit of using studio equipment is that you don't have to adjust to natural light and weather conditions. You can create the necessary light, shadows, smoke and wind yourself.

Creating the right lighting

There are no “right” and “wrong” light shaping attachments. Each tool presented in our studio serves its own purposes. First, let's see how they differ from each other.

- Softbox

Softboxes create soft and directional lighting. With the help of them, you will evenly distribute the brightness, place accents and create the effect of “fill light”, like when a window is open on a summer day.

The main advantage of softboxes is that you have full control over the direction of the light, which means you can avoid reflections from walls and surrounding objects.

The closer the softbox is to the subject, the softer the light. Keep this in mind when choosing equipment. For example, if you want to capture a group of 4 or more people or a full body model, you will need to move the softbox far enough away. This can affect the softness of the light.

Depending on the purpose of shooting, in ATOR you will choose a softbox of the right size. The specialists of our studio will advise you and help you choose exactly the equipment that will bring any ideas to life.

- Stripbox

Stripbox is a kind of softbox. It has a more elongated rectangular shape. Used for full-length shots. Evenly distributes light over the entire length, leaving no dark, unlit areas.

If you use a regular softbox for full-length shots, there is a chance that the legs below the knee will not be well lit. To avoid this problem, stripboxes exist.

The stripbox, like the softbox, produces a well-directed light without affecting other light sources. With it, you will have full control over the shadows, structure and light fall.

The only downside is that rectangular lights will be reflected as rectangles in the eyes of models or on subjects.

- Octobox

Due to their shape, Octoboxes diffuse light widely. They are suitable for taking portraits of several people or objects at the same time. When using the Octobox, natural circular highlights are reflected in eyes and surfaces.

- Beauty Dish

Provides a soft but concentrated light. Suitable not only for perfect portrait photography, but also for catalog shots. Beautiful circular highlights are reflected in the eyes of the models and on the subjects.

- Reflectors

Reflectors even out the light in the picture. With the help of them, you can correctly form the shadows and the direction of the light flux. The silver surface will add cooler tones to the shot, while the golden reflector will add warmth to the frame and emphasize the tan of the models.

- Constant light lamps

With the help of them you can place accents on photos, use different lighting schemes. Lamps, which are presented for rent in our studio, are suitable for beginners and pros.

When used near fusible objects in commercial photography, the lamps become very hot. For example, plasticine products, soufflés and chocolates can lose their shape if the lamp is placed in close proximity to them.

Considering this effect, we have chosen for the studio such fixtures that can direct the desired beam of light from a sufficiently far distance, without harming either the makeup of the models during the creation of portrait photos, or other objects during the advertising shoots.

- Studio Flashes

Unlike constant light bulbs, studio flashes generate virtually no heat and produce a constant color temperature. Plus, you can use any light shaping attachments, reflectors and other accessories with studio flashes.

Flashes brighten up scenes, remove unnecessary shadows and emphasize important details. The models that we have selected for rent at the ATOR studio allow you to pre-set and test the direction of the light. Thus, not a single frame will be spoiled due to incorrect arrangement of devices.

Additional effects

If you want to create a stormy wind or morning mist during your studio shooting, it's easy! In our studio you will rent all the necessary equipment for this.

- Tunnel fan

If you want your models' hair to develop like in glossy magazine pictures, use the tunnel fan. It will create effects from a light breeze to a squally wind. With the help of this device you will bring to life any conceived shots.

- Smoke machine

If during studio photography you need to create a sky, fog or just add a little mystery - use a smoke machine. Smoke can also serve as an additional source for soft and diffused light.

Smoke quickly fills the room, so pictures should be taken immediately. It is better to photograph against a dark background, using direct or side light.
