Top 5 Best Tripods For Overhead Shots & Food Photography

A well done photograph of a perfectly prepared meal can drive sales up for a restaurant or a specialty food store. Food and other product photography are essential marketing tools for many types of businesses.

But, how does one get the camera placed in the correct spot for that? Sometimes, a handheld shot is adequate, but often times we will want to use a good tripod that can placed in a suitable position.

Unfortunately not all tripods are capable of being set up for a directly overhead shot. Because of this, I found 5 good candidates to review as the best tripods for overhead shots. But first…

How to capture overhead photography shots for food & products

One way is put the subject matter on the floor and stand over it. Another way is to bring a sturdy ladder into the studio. But let me tell you, I don’t want to recommend either of those ways.

However there is a much better way through using a tripod with an adjustable extending center column. There is also the option of adding a extendable boom arm to an existing tripod as well.

This lets me position the camera directly over the subject, looking straight down on it. Besides food items and prepared meals, other products can benefit from this camera placement. Toys and small curios or antiques are good subjects for this technique as well. Any artwork, such as a painting or sketches, will image well with overhead camera placement too.

Besides the right tripod, a remote release is necessary for best results. Other than the basic corded release, a wireless release can become a favorite equipment choice. This allows be to stand back and cause the least amount of vibration possible to get a sharp image. I also recommend using mirror lock up for even better results.

A final touch I like to add when doing overheats shots are external light sources. Personally I use soft boxes which are a very inexpensive and incredibly easy to setup. This really does to wonders in making an image pop and worthwhile for sharing.

How I found the best tripods for overhead photography

Shopping for equipment to use in overhead photography isn’t much different from looking for basic photographic equipment. There are a few other considerations for finding the best tripods for overhead shots. Let’s look at a few:

  • Size: For product photography, I need the tripod to be big enough to handle the height needed and sturdy enough to hold the camera. So, a travel tripod or a compact tripod probably won’t fill this need. We don’t need to have the biggest one, though. Unless we are using a larger tripod for other uses as well. Medium size, medium duty is more than good enough.
  • Sturdiness, weight: It’s not always the case, but for this type of photography it’s a good idea to have some heft to the tripod. Added weight will usually add a measure of sturdiness, but a sturdy tripod for other uses may not be suitable for overhead shots. It’s a matter of gravity, plain and simple. If we are extending the camera out over a subject, the tripod needs to have some weight to keep it from tipping over.
  • Functionality: Does it actually do the job I need it to do? I’ve reviewed many very fine tripods, but not too many of them would get recommended as the top 5 best tripods for overhead shots. It needs to have a center column that is capable of extending horizontally, or be able to hold an arm for that purpose.
  • Tripod Head: This isn’t going to be a deal breaker for a great set of legs. If I can remove the head, I can replace it with a good head for overhead shots. A good ball and socket or a three-way head would be my top choices. Other heads could still be usable, but these two types are great for the multi-angle positions required for a lot of overhead shots.

Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT Aluminum Tripod Legs Review

First up on my list is a fantastic set of tripod legs with a convertible center column that can extend in the horizontal as well as vertically. It also has multi angle leg positioning, making this one of the more versatile tripods around for a wide variety of photographic endeavors.

This unit came for the review without a head, but Vanguard offers several heads that match up well with this tripod. One of my favorite heads from this manufacturer is the heavy duty ball and socket head with quick release that I’ve reviewed for nature photography.

Since I had one from another test, I mounted that head. Otherwise, I probably would have mounted my Manfrotto 3-way head. Both of these are great choices.

This leg configuration comes in aluminum or in carbon fiber. I tested the aluminum alloy legs for this review, since having some counter weight was more important to me than being lightweight. The weight was adequate for me to feel comfortable with my APS-C format DSLR, macro lens, and wireless controller, even when extending the center column horizontally.

If using a heavier rig, mounting sand bag weights is an option easily accomplished by making use of the supplied hook.

It raises to a height of about 65”, adding the tripod head brought it up to 70” or so. The 3 section aluminum alloy legs adjust to 25, 50, and 80 degree angles to enable extreme low angle photography or to set up the tripod on uneven surfaces. The legs lock with a flip lock system that is quick and simple to operate.

The multi-angle central column system is what makes this tripod really ‘stand out’ (pun intended) It allows me to move the central column from zero to 180 degrees angles in various vertical and horizontal positions.

This instant swivel stop-n-lock mechanism securely repositions the central column in one simple movement, in just a few seconds, while maintaining the tripod set up and stability. Using this feature allowed me to extend my camera over the subject with ease while not working about any vibration or tipping.

For me, the only grudges I had was that if it was just a little heavier, eliminating the need for adding extra weights. I would also like to see the center column be just a tad longer. Minor nits, really which didn’t bother me too much. But would be nice to see in a future model update.

Overall this Vanguard 263AT felt very sturdy and well made and was very easy to setup and use for overhead photography. Definitely one of the best tripods for overhead shots such as food photography, art photography, or small product photography. Highly recommended!

ZOMEI 72 inch Tripod With 360 Degree Ball Head Review

Next up on my list is the mighty Zomei aluminum and magnesium alloy tripod. While Zomei is a relatively new brand in the photography world, I have yet to be disappointed with the quality and versatility of their products. This tripod also follows that tradition.

When it came to the build quality, this unit is very sturdy for its size and extends up to 72” with the supplied ball and socket head. Having that extra height was great for shooting from a high angle with a macro lens down on an angle.

Two nice things about this tripod is that it collapses and folds up to a very compact size, useful for travelling to on location restaurant photoshoots, or whatever type of location photography you’re needing to do. Also the legs are in four sections, which is part of the reason it becomes so compact for travel or storage. They twist lock very securely with minimal pressure.

Using the center column in horizontal position wasn’t the simplest or most elegant solution imaginable, but it got the job done, which is what I was looking for. It also doesn’t extend very far compared to other tripod options available, but I found it adequate for the intended use of overhead photography.

The supplied ball and socket head was very sturdy and yet was very smooth and simple to operate. The quick release system lived up to the “quick” description. Using the ball and socket head was one of the highlights of reviewing this tripod, it’s really that good. Overall a good pick.

3. Neewer Tripod Monopod with Rotatable Center Column

Neewer Tripod Monopod with Rotatable Center Column Review

Another great offering from Neewer, this convertible tripod has an additional feature I found very useful. That feature is the built in panoramic markings on the underside of the very well made ball and socket head it came with. Probably won’t replace my nodal mount for spherical panoramas, but it sure came in handy for on the fly panoramic shooting.

This aluminum tripod is a little heavier, making it a good choice as one of the best tripods for overhead shots. Maximum height was also respectable, up to 75” over all. The center column comes all the way out and can be mounted upside down for very low angle shots. It can also be attached to the removeable leg and used as a monopod.

Horizontal column mounting is also possible with this versatile tripod, making it ideal for overhead shots. Since the tripod is heavier than some of the other compact tripods, it can sturdily hold a modest sized camera rig. The legs lock by means of twisting knobs and also are capable of multi angle positioning, making this a very usable photographic tool.

As for the ball and socket head with quick release mounts, it was very smooth, secure, and fairly heavy duty. One of the better choices for anyone needing added versatility in addition to overhead shots.

4. Vivitar Horizontal Arm Professional Camera Tripod & Monopod

Vivitar Horizontal Arm Professional Camera Tripod & Monopod Review

Vivitar is a well known brand among photographers. This tripod continues the tradition of quality at value prices we have come to expect from them.

Maximum height of this all aluminum tripod is 67” with the provided ball and socket head. In use the head has a smooth feel and locks securely in place. Also the center column mounts to the removeable tripod leg to become a monopod and can be mounted to extend horizontally for using in overhead product and food photography.

Even though metal, this tripod is light weight. Good for travel, but I would apply a counterweight to secure the camera rig when extending the column horizontally. Just like a couple of other tripods I tested, setting up the center column in horizontal position wasn’t the simplest or most elegant solution around, but it got the job done.

It also doesn’t extend very far compared to other tripod options available, but I found it adequate for the intended use I was reviewing of overhead photography.

Using this Vivitar tripod was enjoyable in the field, with all the versatility of its features. But I felt somewhat limited in the studio due to the shorter center column in horizontal position. Still, it is easily one of the best tripods for overhead shots.

Tycka Tripod Boom Arm Review

If you are already comfortable with your current studio tripod, but would like to branch out into overhead photography, then adding an extendable boom like this one may be your best option.

Fully adjustable, the Tycka tripod boom is designed to be fully vertical and horizontal adjustable. It can hold your camera at your preferred height and angle for as long as you need. The bubble level allows you to adjust the angle precisely. It really is an excellent idea for use in studio, outdoor and macro photography.

Installation is simple, it can be screwed onto the tripod like a tripod head and then the head can be mounted to it. So, any tripod you have and are comfortable with can now be used for overhead shots and product photography.

My Conclusion

Overhead shots are a great way to image food and other products in a pleasing perspective. If buying a new tripod for this use, these I reviewed are your best choices. You can learn more about overhead shots and food photography here.

Overhead photography is also known as flat lay photography. But as the name implies, it is an image shot directly from above; think of it as a birds eye view.

To get those great shots of your product, you will need a good tripod that can be suitable in different positions; a handheld shot might be adequate, but it will never match an overhead tripod.

Here you have the best tripods for overhead shots.

Top 5 Best Overhead Tripods

5. Neewer 2-in-1 Camera Tripod – Best Value

What I Like

  • Rotating ball head
  • Affordable
  • Very stable

What I Dont Like

  • Heavy

Lets start things with an affordable and interesting pick from Neewer, the Neewer 2-in-1 Camera Tripod.

Neewer is not a very known brand, but day by day they are climbing the ladder, thanks to their cost-effective camera tools.

This tripod from Neewer made it on my list thanks to the manufacturers forward-thinking features like a rotating ball head and flexible central column.

Despite coming at an affordable price, this tripod will give you the chance to take better low-angle, macro, and panoramic shots.

It sports a magnesium-aluminum alloy body, making it heavier than competition carbon-fiber versions.

While we should not cry for the heavyweight, we should cherish it instead, it will add extra stability support to our camera.

When you think of it most DSLR cameras are heavy, anyway, which means the Neewer tripod can keep your precious camera safely intact.

Also, something worth mentioning is that you can use one of the legs as a monopod and that is done by removing one of its four legs. Whats more, you can also use the monopod as a walking or climbing stick!
This tripod from Neewer is one tough boy that is capable of holding up to 33 pounds.

Whether youre new to overhead photography or simply want a versatile tripod, the Neewer 2-in-1 Camera Tripod is your cost-friendly option for overhead shots and more.

Key Features of the Neewer Tripod:

  • 360-degree Rotatable Ball Head

4. Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB – Best For Most People

What I Like

  • Sturdy build
  • Multiple positions possible
  • Affordable

What I Dont Like

  • Heavy and bulky

The next tripod in the list is a well-known one among photographers. It comes with an ultra-sturdy built and plenty of angle options that reward in great versatility for studio/overhead photography, and thats none other than the Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB.

Just like the rest of the Vanguard line up of tripods, it comes in a mostly black design with slick metallic silver accents and some nice orange touch that gives the tripod good aesthetics. The design will blend in with anything that is modern, including your camera.

The center hexagonal rod provides great versatility due to it being capable of a full height of over 68 inches and you can pivot it up to 180 degrees, while when it goes in folded mode or say minimum height, 28.1 inches.

Vanguard in general is known for its robust products, so its no surprise for the Alta Pro to inherit the same traits.

Theres also the 360-degree ball that is among the best ball heads currently and at the same time, it is so smooth to work with. Although, Alta Pro is on the heavy side, weighing as much as 2. 44 Kilograms,  at the same time it can support a weight of 15.4 pounds.

No doubt, that the Alta pro is a good bet if you need a studio tripod to perform your flatlay photography

Key Features of the Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB:

  • Made of aluminum alloy
  • Multi-Angle Central Column
  • Instant Swivel Stop-n-Lock System

3. Manfrotto MT055CXPRO3 – Best Carbon Fiber

What I Like

  • Lightweight
  • Affordable
  • Slick and swift technology that gives the tripod leg and angle adjustment

What I Dont Like

  • The building quality could be better

Next on the list, we have a prominent brand Manfrotto that made a name for itself, thanks to the top-notch tripods they provide. Besides that this one is also one of the best tripods from the Manfrotto lineup.

It ticks all boxes a photographer needs. Something that we should expect from Manfrotto, it hasnt been an industry-leading brand for no reason.

I like to bill this tripod as a tripod that can do everything thanks to its weight and height. While being a perfect workhorse in many situations and aspects it is also quite portable.

It weighs 4.4 pounds and it can withstand a weight of 19.8 lbs (9Kg). As far as extension goes, it can reach a maximum height of 66.93 inches (170cm) and a minimum of 3.5 inches (9cm).

The major selling point of the MT055CXPRO3 must be the uncanny method of leg angle selection. Instead of the traditional pull-out tab that you find on a standard tripod, this one pulls down on the outside of each leg section. This is a slick and swift technology that gives us faster leg angle adjustments, way faster than a traditional tripod.

No thats not all, another thing that separates this bad boy from the competition, is the horizontal center column.

It is a 90-degree column, that gives freedom to the column to be extended vertically or horizontally.

Switching between vertical and horizontal column orientation is quite easy, so dont worry you will be able to do it can even with the camera attached.

If you are looking for a tripod that has some nifty features under its sleeves, this one from Manfrotto will be more than happy to accompany you during, the overhead photography.

Key Features of the Manfrotto MT055CXPRO3

  • 90 Degree Column
  • Carbon Fiber Build
  • Leg Angle Selection

Why should you buy it?

This tripod is a slick and swift technology that gives us faster leg angle adjustments, way faster than a traditional tripod.

2. Peak Design Travel Tripod (Carbon Fiber Model ) – Best For Travel

What I Like

  • Sturdy build
  • Stable
  • 5 telescoping leg sections

What I Dont Like

  • Pricey

While the name says travel tripod, this tripod from Peak Design is exceptionally good for food photography, or overhead photography in general; after all, its Peak Design who made it. Theres also the aluminum model, but I decided this time to include the carbon fiber one.

Back when Peak Design travel tripod debuted, it created some huge waves on Kickstarter - so if you consider yourself a photographer and never heard of it you must have been under a rock.

The Travel name comes from its unique 5 telescoping leg sections. Just like the above option from Manfrotto, instead of using traditional cylindrical legs, Peak decided to shape the legs in a way for the center column to be nested close with the folded legs.

The minimum height it can achieve goes to 14 cm (5.5 inches) while the maximum one up to 152 cm (60 inches). And the maximum weight it can support sits at 9.1 kg (20 lbs), which is more than enough for a compact and lightweight tripod.

Its uniqueness doesnt stop only at the legs. The built-in ball head is built in a way to be extremely light and low-profile when collapsed and its strength is quite impressive, you can freely lock any heavy DSLR on it at almost any angle. No doubt, that this is a very capable head.

While I look like a paid reviewer, hyping this tripod so much, thats not only me, you will encounter this bad boy in almost any list that has to do with a tripod. However, you should also know that it comes at a painful price which is understandable.

  • Key Features of the Peak Design Travel Tripod
  • Pro Level Stability
  • It eliminates the volume of the tripod when packed down
  • Ergonomic ball head
  • Premium Carbon Fiber Build

Why should you buy it?

This tripod is extremely light and low-profile when collapsed and its strength is quite impressive.

1. Gitzo GT2542 Series 2 Mountaineer Tripod – Best Build Quality

What I Like

  • Affordable
  • Great build quality
  • Lightweight
  • Capable of holding up to 0Ibs

What I Dont Like

  • Nothing at all

If you found Peak Design expensive, wait till you see the price of this one - just be careful of falling from the chair, because I did the first time I saw it.

The Gitzo GT2542 Mountaineer Carbon Fiber is a tripod that was designed with professionals in mind, hence the insane price. Nevertheless, this promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime investment since tripods are not like a camera; they need to be replaced often due to the technology improving day by day.

Fun Fact: I know photographers who havent changed their tripods since the late 80s and 90s.

Anyway, this is a really well-built tripod that comes in a carbon fiber design. What makes this tripod special, is its capability to hold up to 40lbs, it can go toe to toe with your gym buddy.

Jokes aside, this is a 4-section tripod that sits at a 22-inch length when folded, and thanks to the Carbon eXact tubes and the magnesium finish, it weighs little as 3.7 lbs, making it quite a traveling companion.

If you think about it, this is among the lightest tripods, and at the same time, it is one of the strongest. Tripods from the competition struggle to support less than half of the weight Gitzo can, while not being as compact.

If money is not a concern, and you are willing to pursue photography in professional grades, you simply cant go wrong with this indestructible tripod.

Key Features of the Gitzo Mountaineer:

  • Insanely High Payload
  • Premium Build
  • Carbon eXact tubes
  • G-lock Ultra system

Why should you buy it?

This promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime investment, worth the purchase definitely.

Things To Keep In Mind When Shopping for an Overhead Tripod

Size of the Tripod

Not just for overhead photography, but in general you need a tripod that is big enough to handle the height that is needed and sturdy enough to hold your camera. Since photography doesnt have to do with traveling around and all that, a heavy and big tripod would be the choice you need to consider the most.

Sturdiness and Stability

The most essential requirement would be its stability and how well the tripod is built. You need a tripod that can handle the weight of your camera and every other equipment like lenses or extra lights.

Yet again, I would advise avoiding cheap and lightweight tripods. It does no good on saving money for a cheap tripod that will end up costing more in the long run and even might break your camera and equipment along with it.

Tripod Head

The Tripod head is the part where the camera sits, for overhead photography, there are two types of tripods that you should consider.

The Ball Head:

This type comes in different forms and provides faster and more accurate rotation. Basically, it keeps the ball from moving around when you want it in one position.

For those with a bit more money, you should look at our geared tripod head roundup.

The Pan-Tilt Head

As the name implies, this one allows you to rotate your camera right left and up or down, just note that this one costs more, if you can bypass the price this actually might be the best solution.

You might need to buy the ball separately, so take that into account.

Tripod Legs and Feet

You will find tripod legs mostly in aluminum and carbon fiber, with the latter being the best.

You also want to make sure that youre tripod has stable, and preferably rubber feet; so they can prevent it from slipping.

How to capture overhead shots?

Simply extend your tripod to its highest setting and aim the camera as down as it goes.

Stabilize Your Tripod

After setting the tripod up, the first and most important thing you need to do is to stabilize it. You dont want it to learn in the wrong direction or even fall over the product.

Look Through

Before you start shooting, make sure that first, you look through the viewfinder. Basically what I mean is do a quick walk-through, a test.

Battery-Life

Theres nothing more annoying than having to stop the process, just because your battery ran out. So try to make sure that theres an outlet close by, or fully charge it before you start shooting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a tripod for overhead shots?

Now that you know what overhead shots are, I would like to say that you need a tripod just because of the fact that you can never take pictures from above! A tripod is the best accessory to use as it can be moved around easily.

What is the most important feature of an overhead tripod?

The most important feature that a tripod should own for overhead shots is adjustability in many ways. Just as I mentioned, this kind of photography is a bit weird, and an adjustable tripod, adjustable in many different ways, can ease your job!

What is the best material that tripods are made of?

Whenever you search for tripods, you should expect two materials mostly used in making them. There are aluminum and carbon fiber tripods. Still, what you should know is that carbon fiber ones are stronger but more expensive as well.

Closing Thoughts

Overhead photography is a great way to capture great content for product photography or everything in general, it gives a pleasing aesthetic feeling to your photos. But you should also know that it is not an easy task to do, thats why I hope that this article gave you guys some insight on what to do and what tripod to pick.

How to shoot from above and not sweat?

Few people argue about the importance of using a tripod and tethering * in product photography, but what if you need to shoot from top to bottom, and the tripod is not suitable for this? And if the composition is large, then no tripod will help. But there is a way to raise the camera directly to the ceiling! It took me a couple of “fitness shoots” with lots of climbing up and down the ladder to find an easier solution. :)

Shooting from above, food table

One of the most popular studio accessories (the so-called "grips") will help you - the Super Clamp (No. 035 according to the Manfrotto catalog, load up to 15 kg). The kit may include a pin (more on that below) and an insert for attaching to flat surfaces. The easiest way to get a clip is from Manfrotto, a reliable and affordable manufacturer of studio hardware.

The

Super Clamp also allows you to mount two flashes per stand, mount a flash or camera on a table or door, attach reflectors and flags to a stand that already has a flash, and more.

In addition to the super-clamp for hanging the camera “to the ceiling”, you will need a tripod head and a standard pin (see the photo below), but always with a thread for your tripod head (most often it is ⅜ inch). Pins on sale are both without threads at all, and with one, and with both of the two standard ones: ¼ and ⅜ inches. If you bought a super-clamp without a pin, you can buy it separately.

Clamp holds the camera head through the pin and is fixed to the horizontal bar (#272B or #2983 according to the Manfrotto catalog), which stands on two racks. The same crossbar can be used to hang the background. Please note that there are background hanging bars in which the pipe rotates even after being mounted on stands, which makes it impossible to use such a crossbar for the purposes described here.

Update: We recently filmed advertising pictures for the 20th anniversary of Azbuka Vkusa. Shooting from above. The camera mounting technique remains the same. Of course, you can mount a tripod head on the “crane”, but not all studios have them, and I don’t have a personal one. In addition, the crane needs a more massive rack and sand bags.
