Practice makes perfect – there’s no doubt about that. However, knowing some photography poses to use as guidelines can help you improve quicker.

In this article, you’ll find portrait poses that you can start practising right away.

Also, there are some extra tips at the end to help you become more photogenic and learn how to pose.

There’s a lot to cover and tons of great photography poses, so let’s get started!

Table of Contents

1. The 45-degree rule

Credit: Behrouz Sasani (left) / Prince Akachi (right)

When face and body look straight at the camera, you can end up looking bulky. If your body is turned 45 degrees towards one of the sides, you’ll look slimmer and more relaxed.

Alternatively, you can have the body facing forward and the head turned 45-degrees. This is one of the most classic poses in portrait photography.

You’ll see this classic stance used time and time again both in famous portrait paintings and photos.

2. Put the weight on the back foot

Credit: Maria Orlova (left) / Victoria-Borodinova (right)

With this pose, you position the subject with one leg placed slightly forward than the other, keeping the weight to the back foot. By doing this, you allow the front leg to bend and look more natural.

This works well for both male and female models. For women, it has the added advantage of popping the hip to accentuate the body’s natural curves – you’ll see Instagram influencers pose like this.

You can read our guide to great male poses for more ideas for posing men.

3. Standing with crossed legs

Credit: Jeff Denlea

These portrait poses are normally used for women. You can cross the leg in front of the one that’s holding the weight or behind it.

In both cases, the crossing of the legs makes the hip look curvy, accentuating the body’s shape.

Check out our guide to posing females for some more ideas.

4. Leaning back

Credit: Andrea Piacquadio

This is a great pose because of its versatility. You can use this on men and women, children and elders; for casual and formal shoots, groups or single portraits – with small variations between them.

The idea is that by having physical support, the rest of the body can be more relaxed.

You can mix it up with other poses and make it fit the situation and model.

For example, if you’re photographing children, you can ask them to tilt the head back towards the wall, while for female subjects, you can ask them to curve their backs a little to enhance their natural curves.

5. Leaning on a wall with leg up

Credit: Prayoon Sajeev

If you’re looking for full-length portrait photography poses, this is a simple and relaxed one. It’s a casual variation of the previous pose where you simply bend one leg up to the wall.

It’s usually better to do this if the model is wearing trousers (long pants) since having the knee pointing towards the camera isn’t very flattering.

6. Leaning forward

Credit: Michael Dam (left) / Shawn Olivier Boivin Blanchard (right)

Leaning forwards towards the camera is a great way to shape the body and make the face the focal point. That’s why leaning is used in a lot of portrait photography poses.

Keep in mind that anything closer to the camera will look bigger, so this will automatically slim the body.

You don’t want the face looking disproportionate either, so stand at a reasonable distance and avoid using a wide-angle lens. This will prevent distortions.

7. S-shape pose

Credit: Ferdinand Studio (left) / Neemias Seara (right)

This is mainly a feminine pose. To accentuate the natural curves and give more flow to the body, pose your model or client following an S shape.

It shouldn’t be exaggerated in a way that looks awkward or that she is uncomfortable – even a hint of the S shape is good.

This pose can be done with the model sitting, standing or lying down – you’ll see many famous portrait photographers doing this.

Top 10 Portrait Poses For Individuals

@kaleyfromkansas

Out of all the different photography sessions out there – we’ve found that posing individuals can sometimes be the most difficult.

Whether you’re photographing high school seniors, maternity, boudoir, or portraits for personal branding, there’s something about photographing individuals that requires you to be extra on your game as a photographer. There’s nobody for your client to hug, or hold hands with, or chat to. It’s just you, and them. Sometimes you’ll be behind the camera and they’re just staring at you all awkwardly, like… “what’s next?”

Here at Unscripted, we’re all about the art of candid prompting. And although a lot of people think about posing and prompting as being in opposition to authenticity, it’s actually the opposite.

If you, as a photographer, take charge of the moment by giving your clients gentle direction and prompting, it takes a whole lot of pressure off the individual. They’re not stuck trying to think of the next pose, or how to move their body, and it actually helps them relax into the moment and be their natural selves in front of the camera.

Taking charge with confidence requires you to do a bit of prep-work before your session. If you can create a flow of poses that feel fluid and comfortable, you’ll have the best chance at capturing the emotion-filled images you and your clients will love.

The first ten minutes of the shoot are probably going to be a little awkward, and any photos you take are probably not going to be your best. This is totally normal, it can take a little while to get warmed up! Your best bet is to start out with some fun icebreaker poses to get everyone in the mood. Then, it’s time for the energetic poses. These are the big-mouthed, extroverted ones. Spinning, yelling, twirling… anything with lots of movement! Once everyone’s feeling all loosey goosey, it’s time to dive right into the raw, emotive heart of it all. That’s where the intimate poses come in. These are soft, sweet, and sure to tug on the ‘ol heartstrings.

Here are some examples to get you inspired – so you can walk into your next shoot with confidence!

It's not about the size clothes, but in feeling like yourself and, of course, the secrets of posing

Share

Any girl can look like a supermodel, you just need to take the right pose. Model Katya Zharkova told our colleagues from Marieclaire.ru how to look even better in photos than in real life. Use her advice, with their help you will be able to avoid unsuccessful angles, visually lose a dozen kilograms and bring to the fore the most beautiful parts of the body.

It was only at the age of 30 that Katya managed to feel like herself, assuming her weight and shape. She clarifies: it's about learning to control the body, to take absolute control over it - like speakers have a voice, and artists have a brush.

- I know how to proudly show off my plus size, but at the same time I am told that I look so slim that there is a risk of falling into the category of regular models. And all because now I understand who I am. And I insert all new successful photos into my portfolio.

Katya has formulated seven rules that will help absolutely any girl to show herself in the best light in front of the camera.

A smile beautifies, but a suffering facial expression repels

Share

Rule 1 . Smile. According to the experience of the model, not all designers want to see a laugher on the set. But she considers a smile to be her trademark and recommends showing a good mood in the frame - then it is especially pleasant to look at such photos.

Regulation 2 . No need to pull the dress at the photo shoot, trying to smooth out the folds on the sides. Believe in your body and that it is beautiful. Relax and let go of the shyness.

Excellent handwork - the poses look natural and there is no feeling that the weight of the model is above the norm

Share

Rule 3 . And now the specifics. See what professional models do with their hands: one is placed on the hip, the other is smoothly led along the body - a beautiful curve is obtained that distracts attention from the not always chiseled shapes of the figure. You can involve different elements of clothing: touching the collar, using pockets - it looks very natural.

You will never find “thrown” arms hanging along the body with a model - on the contrary, they are always active. But do not overdo it by leaning on everything. Let the objects in the background remain the entourage, not the main characters.

Left - right. On the right - do not do this

Share

In no case do not twist your hands and fingers into different gestures. “Class”, “fig”, “goat” - it may seem cool, but in reality it looks stupid. Strive for elegance.

Rule 4 . "Break" the body: there are four main points - shoulders, chest, waist and hips. Work in these planes.

According to the model, the most successful angle that creates the effect of harmony is three-quarters, when the free leg is facing the camera with the toe. Practice in front of a mirror before you go to the shoot.

Left - right. On the right - do not do this

Share

Or you can turn to face the photographer, raise one hip and slightly tilt the body forward. This is how Katya makes her “worst” photos.

Rule 5 . A common mistake when a girl chooses a strange head tilt. Learn to control it. Tilt too much - may look like a broken neck, it will be painful to look at the photo.

The ideal, according to the model, is to keep the head straight and change its position slightly and slowly, so that the photographer has time to adapt the frame to a new angle. Be sure to evaluate the result after the first clicks of the shutter, and if it turned out well, then continue to pose, changing the successful pose to a minimum.

Looking good in photographs is just a skill that can be practiced

Share

And to make your hair flow beautifully. as in advertising, the wind must blow in the face.

Regulation 6 . Favorite position of all celebrities: if you cross your legs, the hips will become thinner. Or you can shift the weight on one foot, gently substitute the second - heel to heel. It is also allowed to playfully put the knee forward. But in no case do not spread your legs wide and do not bend at the ankles. It won't be nice.

Beautiful on the left, not on the right

Share

Rule 7 . Don't cheat on yourself: if you're not averse to fooling around in life, show it in a photo. The jump, from which the hair takes off, and a light appears in the eyes, will be the highlight of your photo shoot.

Outdoor photo shoot poses

Outdoor photo shoot looks beautiful, bright and varied. Sunlight, scenery of city or village streets - you just have to come up with the theme of the photo shoot and create an interesting image.

Beautiful poses for a photo shoot on the street. Places to pose.

There are many topics for a street photo session. For example, you can arrange a family or children's shoot, "Love story" or "Best friends". And, of course, an individual photoset, where you can surprise everyone in a romantic and feminine way, or vice versa - in a bright and sexy way. Having come up with a theme and image, the choice of poses is of no small importance. It is posing that is the basis of all work.

Erotic and daring poses are obtained on the hood of a car or on a motorcycle. Here, a pose based on an object is perfect.

Beautiful pictures are taken on the steps in the park. Here you can experiment with standing and sitting postures.

Make historical objects and monuments your decoration. Just think carefully about your image, using interesting details of clothing and accessories.

There are a lot of options for poses on a park bench. If you want to cross one leg over the other, remember that your knees must be turned away from the camera. If you sit sideways to the camera, then the figure will visually become thinner.

Lean against a house wall or a street lamp with your head tilted back. This pose will look good, both in profile and in full face.

Interesting poses for a street photo session can be created in motion. And they are not limited to just walking. You can keep blowing soap bubbles or experiment with jumping - it's fashionable now.

Take pictures in front of beautiful buildings, or just in the middle of the road.

Beautiful outdoor photos are taken at any time of the year. You can come up with charming poses for a photo shoot on the street in both summer and winter. Lie in the snow, or pose near the snow-covered Christmas trees. Create an image of the Snow Queen or Snow Maiden. Show your imagination - experiment!

Professional photographers recommend shooting outdoors in the morning or after 17:00.

Best poses for outdoor photo shoot

Let's look at the most successful and cool poses for a photo shoot on the street (you can even practice at the mirror first):

  1. If you like to be the center of attention, then this pose will show your triumph: bend one leg at the knee and lift it up, spread your arms to the sides and lift it up. The chest should be tucked up and slightly tilted forward, you can lift your chin up a little.
  2. A pose that makes you visually slimmer: put your leg a little to the side, and transfer the weight to the hip, bend one arm at the waist.
  3. The face is directed to the camera, and the body is slightly turned, you can put your hand on your hip.
  4. Daring criss-cross pose - one leg in front, the other bent at the knee, with hands clasped behind the head.
  5. It looks interesting if you lean on some object. In this case, you can cross your legs, or bend one, and the second will be straightened.

A few tips on how to look beautiful in a photo:

  • clothes should emphasize your dignity. Do not choose flashy colors. And remember that the black and purple color in the picture will add a few years to you;
  • in makeup, the main thing is to highlight the eyes;
  • depict different emotions so that the photos are not monotonous.

To get the expected result and positive emotions from a photo session, you need to relax, not be shy and be natural. Fear and stiffness will be visible in the photographs. Therefore, you need to prepare yourself not only externally, but also emotionally.
