Nikon rumors 2022

Nikon only released two cameras last year, but they were absolute humdingers. The Nikon Z fc was the Big N's hottest product in years, in demand among serious shooters and fashion-forward users in equal measure. Then there was the mighty Nikon Z9 , the new flagship that packs a 45.7MP sensor, up to 120fps continuous burst shooting, and a body that abolishes the mechanical shutter thanks to a virtually rolling shutter-free stacked sensor.

Even so, Nikon has a tough road to hoe in terms of climbing back to the top of the tree. Formerly one of the "big two" with Canon, the manufacturer fell to fifth place in terms of mirrorless market share in 2020 – behind Sony, Canon, Fujifilm and even Olympus – with just 7.5%. The current Nikon rumors suggest that the company has abandoned DSLR development altogether to focus on its mirrorless output, but this year's underwhelming Nikon Z30 doesn't fill us with inspiration.

So, what Nikon rumors are swirling at the moment to give us an idea of where the brand will go next?

Nikon Z8

Sony dropped a bombshell by announcing the 61MP Sony A7R IV , but it appears that Nikon is preparing a 61MP warhead of its own – and the Nikon Z8 will apparently feature the very same sensor that's inside the A7R IV.

Nikon has apparently signed up to purchase the 61MP Sony Exmor R sensor, which will power a Z8 featuring dual CF Express memory card slots, improved image stabilization, a new resolution shift mode to capture 240MP images, and an ISO range of 64 to 25,600 (expandable to 32-102,400).

That said, the latest scuttlebutt is that the camera could possess a 68MP sensor, after Nikon China posted an image with that resolution – despite Nikon not having a camera (that we know about) with that pixel count, leading to speculation that it could be from the Z8.

What seems to be the design of the Z8 has been leaked by a Nikon patent registration, depicting a significantly more sizable body than the existing Z6 or Z7 – presumably to accommodate the increased heat dissipation from the larger image sensor, and potentially from shooting 6K video as well.

No more DSLRs or compacts

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Big N is said to have abandoned development of both digital SLRs and compact cameras.

The manufacturer's last DSLR was the flagship Nikon D6 in 2020 (now replaced by the mirrorless flagship Nikon Z9 ), and a report by Nikkei revealed that it will no longer develop DSLRs (though Nikon was quick to point out that production would continue).

With the compact and point-and-shoot camera market being ever more eroded by the best camera phones , Nikon's withdrawal in this sector comes as no surprise.

Nikon Z4

Take plenty of salt with this one, as advised by Nikon Rumors. The site reports that this is an EVF-free camera along the lines of the Sony A7C – "think Z50 but with an FX-format sensor". It is said to be smaller (63 x 129 x 96mm) and lighter (565g) than the Nikon Z5 , and may even be an "iCamera" with all-new interface and potentially apps. However, as Nikon's recent re-strategizing has seen the company move away from entry level mirrorless, this one might be a relic of past concepts.

Nikon Z70

Even Nikon Rumors calls these "another guess with a set of made-up specs", but nonetheless it's a story doing the rounds. According to the report , this would feature a new stacked DX sensor paired with an Expeed 7 processor, burst shooting at 11fps mechanical or 20fps electronic shutter, in-body image stabilization and AI-based subject detection and tracking.

Nikon 1000fps 4K camera

(Image credit: Nikon / Digital Camera Info)

Frames per second hadn't been Nikon's forte up until the release of the Z9, but the change looks set to continue with the advent of an astonishing new 4K sensor that can capture up to 1000fps – all while delivering what Nikon calls "the world's highest levels of sensor performance".

"This new stacked CMOS image sensor uses a fine-pitch wafer level wire connection technology consistent with the 2.7 um pixel size," Nikon told us . "Also, it has a total pixel count of approximately 17.8 megapixels that realizes 4K × 4K high-resolution imaging of 1,000 frames per second and 110-dB high dynamic range (HDR) characteristics. This is one of the widest dynamic ranges in the industry."

The caveats are that this is a one-inch sensor, and is likely to be intended for industry rather than consumer use. However, with Nikon working on such bleeding-edge technology, it could open some very interesting doors for its consumer cameras going forward…

Nikon's mysterious testing models

Nikon is currently testing a lot of different Z-mount camera models , and there's been some speculation as to what exactly is what. It seems a given that one is going to be the new flagship Z9, and another is possibly also the Z8 that'll sit below it in a similar manner to the Z6 (more on this below). So what else is on the cards is an interesting question.

We know that three of the models being tested have the following specs:

Model #1: 60 MP, 16 bit A/D model with a 5,76 MP viewfinder, 120 Hz refresh rate.

Model #2: Fewer megapixels, a camera designed for sport, same 5. 76 MP 120 Hz viewfinder, very high frame rate (at least 20 fps) and stunning AF tracking (better than the D6).

Model #3: A 46 MP sensor, 20 fps, the viewfinder is also 5.76 MP with a 120 Hz refresh rate.

It's been rumored that one of these models could be a Z-mount replacement for the much-loved D850. A sign perhaps that Nikon is moving away from DSLRs, despite the impressive D780? It could be so.

The Nikon verdict

What we think: We expect Nikon to keep building on the Z system for the foreseeable future, adding more full-frame mirrorless lenses to complement the Nikon Z6 II, Nikon Z7 II and of course the Z9 – along with new, smaller optics like the Nikkor Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR and the Nikon pancake primes to suit the new wave of APS-C cameras.

61MP Nikon Z8 incoming… using the same Sony A7R IV sensor?

Sony dropped a huge bombshell on the photographic industry this week, by announcing the 61-megapixel Sony A7R IV full-frame camera. Now it appears that Nikon is preparing a 61-megapixel warhead of its own, with reports that the manufacturer is planning a high-resolution Nikon Z8.

Not only that, but Nikon is building its 61MP camera around the very same sensor that's inside the Sony A7R IV – the full-frame back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor.

That's according to a series of reports from Nikon Rumors, which may have seemed pie in the sky before this week but now make a whole lot of sense in the wake of Sony's announcement.

Earlier in the month, the site reported that a Nikon Z8 was in the works that would boast a 60MP image sensor, dual CF Express memory card slots, improved image stabilization, a new resolution shift mode (aping the pixel shift function pioneered by Olympus, to create  high res images four times that of the sensor's megapixel count) and an ISO range of 64 to 25,600 (expandable to 32-102,400), which is the same as the Nikon Z7 .

Nikon looks to be using the same 61MP Sony Exmor R image sensor as the Sony A7R IV (Image credit: Nikon Rumors)

Back in April, the site also wrote that Nikon had signed a deal to purchase Sony's newly announced 60MP IMX455 image sensor. The site speculated that Sony might not use this sensor itself, and might opt instead for the more advanced IMX555. However, as the 555 is a 100MP sensor, we know this not to be the case.

So it appears that the Nikon Z8 will be using the exact same sensor that's in Sony's new high resolution monster.

It's a very tangled situation, as Sony officially usurped Nikon for the number two spot in the interchangeable lens camera market (behind Canon) earlier this year. Now Nikon is returning firing, competing with Sony's latest technology by purchasing that very same technology, to claw back its place in the race.

It all makes you wonder what Canon's next move will be, as it prepares to unveil the much-anticipated high-resolution Canon EOS R …

Best Nikon Cameras of 2018 | Articles | Photo, video, optics

Nikon celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2017. During this time, the company has amassed millions of fans, and today the lineup includes hundreds of different cameras from miniature action cameras to large professional cameras. And over the past years, only one thing has not changed - the quality of devices. The most loyal fans of Nikon do not change their taste and always choose the equipment of this particular brand. Therefore, today, especially for such confident connoisseurs of Nikon, we have selected the best cameras from Nikon that you can buy in 2018.

Nikon D500 - The Best of the Best

When you combine the technical feats of today's FX series cameras with the ruggedness and convenience of the more amateur DX series, you've got a camera like the Nikon D500. The camera body is made of magnesium alloy and traditionally has a soft streamlined shape. Almost classic Nikon design with a slightly elongated body is unchanged as always. Inside the device is an EXCEED 5 image processor and a CMOS matrix with a resolution of 20.9 megapixels. Already on this it becomes clear that we are dealing with an excellent professional camera. Add to this the ISO range of 100-51.200 and you will notice that the quality of photos in any lighting conditions is just great.

But Nikon D500 is great not only for its photo characteristics, but also for its ability to shoot video in 4K resolution.

The Nikon D500 features a 153-point autofocus system that makes it easy to work in any genre of photography. XQD memory card technology is designed to provide faster data transfer and readout, which is especially good for heavy formats such as RAW or video. And of course, the camera supports Snapbridge, which allows you to quickly sync it with your smartphone or tablet. In short, the Nikon D500 is a great companion for any professional or amateur photographer.

Nikon D7500 - Almost the best camera

The Nikon D7500 is the latest flagship in its series, and it looks like the camera is striving to stay ahead of both its predecessors and competitors. I must say that the D7500 does it very well. To begin with, at least with the excellent quality that distinguishes the photos taken with this camera. In addition, it is worth noting the ISO 100 - 51.200 range. The design of this camera is a bit retro, but the grip is very comfortable, and everything from the placement of the buttons to the weight of the camera is aimed at convenience and comfort when shooting.

Image quality is achieved with a 20.9-megapixel DX-format sensor and an EXPEED 5 image processor, exactly the same as used in the Nikon D500. This means that even in low light conditions, you will be able to capture bright and sharp images. Autofocus works with 51 focus points, and you can always get the perfect shot with continuous shooting at 8 frames per second. 18000 RGB sensor is responsible for color saturation. The Nikon D7500 is always a great choice for anyone who is passionate about photography.

Nikon D5 - Best Pro Camera

For professional photographers and those who want the best from their camera, the Nikon D5 is the best choice. It was released in 2016 and is today the most important and most powerful camera in the FX series. It combines all the features that made FX cameras so popular. The ergonomic body of the camera is combined with low weight and of course, as always, Nikon pays special attention to detail. The ISO range is as impressive as ever: the native 100 – 102,400 range can be extended to 3,280,000.

And this, of course, is not all. The serious autofocus system on this camera is able to work perfectly even in almost complete darkness, with fast movement, and, in principle, copes with any tasks that come across in the path of autofocus. All this allows you to get sharp and clear shots, regardless of shooting conditions.

The quality of the photographs is, of course, due to the presence of an FX CMOS matrix with a resolution of 20.8 megapixels and, of course, the EXPEED 5 image processor. Today it is considered the most powerful Nikon processor. As a result, in addition to perfect photos, you can enjoy shooting 4K video at 12 fps. Nothing to add, a professional, powerful and reliable camera is the Nikon D5.

Nikon COOLPIX P900 - The best zoom

We won't go into detail about why, but if zoom is the most important thing for you in a camera, then it's not worth going far at all. The Nikon COOLPIX P900 offers 83x optical zoom and 166x dynamic zoom, all in a small body. With Nikon COOLPIX P900 you get a real camera with a powerful telephoto lens. The camera body strongly resembles a DSLR, but there are reasons for this: to make the design more convenient and to work with the camera easier. That's why Nikon COOLPIX P900 features an ergonomic body with a comfortable side grip. Again, a high-resolution electronic viewfinder has also been added for convenience.

What works inside this chamber? It's a 16MP CMOS sensor that helps you capture every detail. The camera also has built-in Wi-Fi and GPS for easy synchronization.

When it comes to shooting, the Nikon COOLPIX P900 offers a wide range of creative control and customization, all made even easier and more convenient thanks to the swiveling display on the back of the body.

Nikon COOLPIX B500 - Budget alternative for large zoom

If you are looking for a quality camera with a good zoom at an affordable price, then the Nikon COOLPIX B500 is a sure-fire option. Packed with a 16-megapixel sensor and Full HD video capabilities, plus a convenient flip-out LCD display, this camera is lightweight yet offers great features. The main feature that attracts attention is, of course, 40x optical zoom and 80x dynamic. That is, you can easily shoot performances, sports events and nature. Nikon also took care of the stabilization of the lens, equipping it with vibration reduction. So the footage will be clear.

The camera is compatible with the Snapbridge app and has built-in Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth. At the same time, it maintains a constant connection with the application and allows you to instantly receive the photos you have taken directly to your smartphone.

Nikon D3400 - Beginner DSLR

If you are just starting out on your photography journey and want to try shooting with a real DSLR, if only to learn how to work with all the settings, then the Nikon D3400 is just the perfect option. With its low price, it is definitely an order of magnitude higher than a smartphone camera or a pocket camera. The Nikon D3400 is equipped with a 24.2 megapixel sensor without an optical low pass filter, and thanks to this, it is able to capture rich and rich images that look almost lifelike.

An EXPEED 4 image processor works inside the camera, the Nikon D3400's native ISO range of 100 - 25,600 will cope with various lighting conditions. Plus, you'll definitely get the full DSLR experience: optical viewfinder, crisp autofocus, and of course, Snapbridge for easy syncing with smart devices.

It's safe to say that if you're looking for a great beginner DSLR, the Nikon D3400 is the one for you.

Nikon COOLPIX W100 - Waterproof camera

It's not often, but it does happen that we are looking for a waterproof camera that can capture the underwater world. Especially this question is familiar to lovers of outdoor activities and travel. Nikon COOLPIX W100 is ready to cope with your demands and shoot like nothing happened even at a depth of 10 meters. So, whether you're scuba diving or just snorkeling, the Nikon COOLPIX W100 helps you capture moments in photos and videos. The camera has a hardened body, and is able to operate at temperatures down to -10 ° C, and you can drop it from a height of up to 2 meters, and nothing will happen to it either. Nikon COOLPIX W100 can be given to children or used for the most extreme recreation.
