JPEG and PNG - what's the difference between formats?
JPEG and PNG are the two main image formats used on websites. In some cases, it is better to use JPEG, and in some cases, PNG.
JPEG
JPEG (aka JPG) is an image format that uses lossy compression and does not support transparency. Allows you to adjust the quality level of the saved image - reducing it removes details and adds noise to the image, but the size becomes more compact. JPG, depending on the settings, can provide both 2:1 and 100:1 compression - but the quality is directly proportional to the compression ratio.

JPEG supports 24-bit RGB and CMYK color spaces, as well as 8-bit Grayscale. CMYK and Grayscale are used quite rarely and their support is not without criticism.
JPEG also has integrated EXIF support, which allows storing metadata, for example: the manufacturer and model of the camera used, the shutter speed used for shooting, aperture and ISO, frame resolution, white balance settings, focal length (including equivalent), use of flash , matrix size, date and time of shooting, geographic coordinates and address of the shooting location. nine0004

PNG
PNG 24 is an image format that works with full color images, uses lossless compression, and preserves transparency.
It is not possible to adjust the saving quality in PNG 24, however, you can adapt the saved image to achieve the minimum file size by reducing the number of colors in the image. The name of the format is an acronym for Portable Network Graphics. nine0004
There is also PNG 8, which is more compact than PNG 24, but is only applicable to images with a very limited number of colors: 256 is the maximum. In the case of using PNG 8 for images with a large number of colors, the compression will be lossy and with a posterization effect.
PNG did not support EXIF until 2017, but then its support was implemented in the standard. PNG is rarely used in photography - JPEG is more suitable for compact file storage, and DNG or TIFF RAW formats are better suited for professional work. nine0004
PNG 24 and PNG 8 use extensions for .png files, the bitness used is recorded in the file metadata and is not determined by the extension.
