sensor size

Full format

Full format

One of the most important aspects of a camera is the size of its sensor. A larger sensor will capture more light, which results in improved low-light performance, dynamic range, and general image quality.

focus points

The more focus points the more flexibility in picking which part of the scene to focus on. They also give the image sensor a better probability in identifying the right area of the scene to focus on in more automatic modes.

megapixels (main camera)

12.2MP

24.2MP

The number of megapixels determines the resolution of the images captured with the main camera. A higher megapixel count means that the camera is capable of capturing more details. However, the megapixel count is not the only important element determining the quality of an image.

maximum light sensitivity

Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value. (Sony Alpha 7S II)

Unknown. Help us by suggesting a value. (Sony Alpha a7 III)

With a higher light sensitivity (ISO level), the sensor absorbs more light. This can be used to capture moving objects using a fast shutter speed, or to take images in low light without using a flash.

maximum expanded ISO

409600ISO

204800ISO

Expanded ISO allows you to go beyond the native ISO. It does this by digitally enhancing the image output. The resulting image will have less quality than when staying within the native ISO range, but it can be useful in certain situations.

has sensor shift stabilization

✔Sony Alpha 7S II

✔Sony Alpha a7 III

With sensor shift, the image sensor (rather than the lens) moves to counterbalance any vibration of the camera. This means the image will be stabilised regardless of what lens is being used.

continuous shooting at high resolution

Fast continuous shooting is useful for catching action shots.

has AF tracking

✔Sony Alpha 7S II

✔Sony Alpha a7 III

With AF tracking, once you choose the subject and press the shutter release part way down, as the subject moves, the autofocus will follow it. No more out of focus shots.

Has phase-detection autofocus for photos

✔Sony Alpha 7S II

✔Sony Alpha a7 III

Phase-detection autofocus is much faster than a contrast detection autofocus, allowing for sharper images.

Videography

video recording (main camera)

2160 x 30fps

2160 x 30fps

The maximum resolution available for videos shot with the main camera. Although it may be possible to choose among other frame rates, those recordings usually have lower resolutions.

Has phase-detection autofocus for videos

✔Sony Alpha 7S II

✔Sony Alpha a7 III

A phase-detection autofocus system is faster than a contrast detection autofocus system. Even when recording scenes with a lot of fast movements, the videos are sharp and clear.

has continuous autofocus when recording movies

✔Sony Alpha 7S II

✔Sony Alpha a7 III

When recording movies they stay focussed and sharp.

has a microphone input

✔Sony Alpha 7S II

✔Sony Alpha a7 III

A microphone port allows connecting external high-end or specialized microphones.

has a socket for a 3.5 mm audio jack

✔Sony Alpha 7S II

✔Sony Alpha a7 III

With a standard mini jack socket, you can use the device with most headphones.

has a stereo microphone

✔Sony Alpha 7S II

✔Sony Alpha a7 III

A stereo microphone allows to record audio files or movies in stereo without an external microphone.

Has timelapse function

✖Sony Alpha 7S II

✔Sony Alpha a7 III

A timelapse shows a long passage of time sped up. A series of photographs taken from the same position over a long period is joined together to create a short video. It is great way to capture things like the setting sun, or clouds moving across the sky.

movie bitrate

100Mbps

100Mbps

The higher the movie recording bitrate the better the movie quality with more and crispier details and less compression artifacts.

number of microphones

More microphones result in better sound quality and enable the device to filter out background noise.

Battery

Has dual card slots

✖Sony Alpha 7S II

✔Sony Alpha a7 III

It has two memory card slots, allowing you to store more photos without switching cards. This is particularly useful on long shoots when you need more space.

shoots raw

✔Sony Alpha 7S II

✔Sony Alpha a7 III

A raw image file contains minimally processed data from the image sensor. Raw files are so named because they are not yet processed and therefore are not ready to be printed or edited with a bitmap graphics editor.

supports lossless compressed raw

✖Sony Alpha 7S II

✖Sony Alpha a7 III

It is capable of shooting stills in a lossless compressed raw format. This has all the advantages of shooting raw, while taking up much less storage space. The smaller file size also allows quicker read/write speeds.

has pixel shift shot

✖Sony Alpha 7S II

✖Sony Alpha a7 III

The camera can take a series of shots, shifting the sensor slightly with each one. These can then be combined to create an extremely high-resolution image. It’s particularly useful for things like photographing artwork.

Which cameras are better?

Review of Sony A7C and differences from Sony A7-3 - Website of a professional photographer in Kyiv The camera in terms of weight and dimensions is closer to the A6000 series than to the full-frame line.

Micra 4/3 you can betray a fiery hello and immediately say a firm goodbye .

This is how the dimensions of A7C and A7 III differ:

  • A7C: 124×71. 1×59.7mm, 509g
  • A7 III: 126.9 x 95.6 x 73.7mm, 650g

The size was reduced by reducing the already uncomfortable grip, as well as shifting the viewfinder to the side. Regarding the viewfinder, it has shifted to the side, similar to the A6000-series. In general, the camera looks more like cropped models:

At the same time, is the stuffing of Sony A7C same as A7 III:

  • 24.2MP back-illuminated sensor
  • ISO 100-51200
  • 5-axis matrix stabilization (compensates up to 5 stops of exposure)
  • photography up to 10fps (and slightly larger buffer)
  • 4K (up to 30fps) video from all sensor
  • FullHD 120fps
  • microphone input and headphone output
  • battery NP-FZ100
  • WiFi and Bluetooth
  • dust and moisture protection.

Pro design

The A7C has even fewer buttons and controls. Removed the joystick and several customizable custom buttons. On the other hand, the A7C's video record button is now on the top and, in my opinion, is more conveniently located. The camera has only 1 slot for SD memory cards of the UHS-II standard.

The viewfinder with a refresh rate of 60 to 120fps (which is good) and a resolution of 2.36MP is on the side. The resolution of the A7-III and A7C viewfinders is the same, only the refresh rate is different. Let me remind you for those who are not in the subject, the viewfinder of the Sony A7 III is absolutely non-working, it's a complete tin. nine0003

Camera achievement consists of rotary screen . This is truly a breakthrough for Sony cameras, available only in the A7C and A7S III so far. But with the resolution no luck. It has the same bottom as in the A7-3 - with a resolution of 0.9 megapixels, a diagonal of 3 inches and an aspect ratio of 4:3.

It's Sony's amazing thing to make the crappiest screens on the market with arbitrary aspect ratios. Curiously, the A6000 series has a 16:9 aspect ratio while the A7 has a 4:3 aspect ratio. Here they made a hybrid - a screen with an ultra-low resolution and an aspect ratio of 4:3 in a full-frame carcass for $ 2000, shooting 16:9 videoand photo 3:2. But the screen is 4:3. Regarding the screen resolution, even the younger model Fujifilm X-T3 has 1.04 megapixels. But it is not a competitor to this camera. In this segment, Nikon Z6 and Canon R have a screen resolution of 2.1MP and the difference is very noticeable compared to 0.9MP in Sony cameras. I pay a lot of attention to this, because. The screen for mirrorless is very important.

By the way, there is still a non-touch menu.

Regarding autofocus

It still lags far behind its competitors in low light shooting. If the A7 III has an autofocus sensitivity of up to -3EV (this is the level of the Canon 5D mark III of 2012), then the A7C has increased this parameter to - 4EV, which still falls short of other modern cameras (e. g. Fujifilm X-T4 and Canon R down to -6 EV). What the autofocus looks like on the Sony A7 III at sunset (it's not night yet) can be seen here. nine0003

The camera is equipped with 693 phase sensors and 425 contrast sensors. For comparison, the Canon R 5655 has focus points.

Functionality

A very nice feature of the A7C — the video recording time limit has been removed. After pressing the record button, the camera writes for an unlimited time until the card is full, the battery runs out or overheating occurs ( which happens all the time in these cameras). And such a compact camera will have big problems with overheating. The entire A6000 line suffers greatly from this. The A7 line also overheats, but the A7-3 already withstands at least 45 minutes of continuous recording. Given that the A7C stuffed a full-frame sensor with a stabilizer into a small body, then you should not hope for a long video recording time at all. So, the lack of a limit on the recording time is nothing more than a marketing ploy from Sony. nine0003

Another really interesting innovation is the storage of data from the in-camera gyroscope. This feature documents all camera movements during video recording. Then, using the Sony Catalyst software, you can programmatically stabilize the captured video. As a result, software stabilization will be even more effective than a matrix stub (is it really possible??? it's unbelievable that there is something better than a matrix stub!). By the way, a similar technology is used in the top Sony Venice 9 movie camera.0030 .

The Sony A7C strangely cut off the mechanical shutter - the fastest shutter speed is 1/4000, while the A7 III has 1/8000. The cameras cost the same...

Price

The most interesting. The new A7C is launched with a suggested price of around $2,000. for body and 2500 dollars. for a body with a 28-60mm f/4-5.6 kit lens.

Wangyu: at first, it will cost more than the A7 III, but then after a few months, the models will even out in price. nine0030

The set price looks bold against the background of the same Nikon Z5 - also a compact camera, but devoid of Sony's characteristic diseases. Namely, the lack of ergonomics as such and buggy wherever possible. Of course, there will be demand for the Sony A7C model, because everything is in order with marketing at this office. But for thinking people, I would highly recommend the Nikon Z5 or Z6. Similar cameras, but much better in operation.

Pro lenses

The camera is very light and compact. It is important to choose the appropriate optics for it. After all, the whole idyll will instantly end if you fasten some kind of bulky G-master onto such a little one. Therefore, the whale lens looks very nice. nine0003

Kit Sony 28-60mm f/4-5.6 worth about $500 - a lot, as for a dark zoom with boring focal lengths. But it is a compact pancake. I love these lenses. But Panasonic also released a dark one with the S5, but 20-60mm, which is already much more interesting than 28-60mm.
