DMITRY EVTIFEEV'S BLOG | Reasoning about the system Leica

I must say right away that I am not an adherent of Leica , but I have no prejudices either.

I used to judge photographic equipment by studying its capabilities and ignoring its price. So it turns out more objectively, because. some hierarchy of cameras and lenses is built. I think that such a system for evaluating equipment is more correct, because the cost of a camera or lens has long been no longer directly related to the cost of the product, so we'll just throw off the "husk" of marketing and take a sober look at things. nine0005

So, what is the Leica and why have I not written about it in detail for so long. Firstly, the Leica is a very niche camera, it should be immediately clear that this camera is “not for everyone”. Both in terms of price and in terms of ease of use for everyday needs. And if the price can somehow be ignored, because this is far from the most expensive camera available for purchase, the ease of use here is clearly a big fan (I'm talking about "true" rangefinders Leica ).

It seems to me that most of those who will read these lines no longer use rangefinder cameras and it would be unusual for them to look into the viewfinder and see there not a picture from the lens, but an independent picture from the viewfinder with frames that indicate the area covered by the frame .

back to contents ↑

Focusing

Love autofocus? Ah... But it is not in rangefinder cameras Leica . You will have to focus by looking through the rangefinder window and combining the two images. If they are aligned, then you are in focus. nine0005

By the way, focusing manually will also be unusual. You cannot put your fingers on top of the lens, otherwise they will be visible in the rangefinder and block the picture. Therefore, the hand will have to be brought under the lens from below. Here's how it is here.

back to contents ↑

Frame format

I think many people know that the Leica was the ancestor of the 36 x 24 mm frame format, but why this particular frame size?
Historically, Oskar Barnak liked to take pictures and walked around with a heavy format camera and its tripod. At first, he thought about increasing the number of frames, because. one plate used to place only one frame. He took 20 mini-frames on one plate and thought about how to make the camera more mobile. The idea was to reduce the size of the negative and then use the enlarger to print a large photo. nine0061 The frame format must be small so that the camera is small and at the same time sufficient to make a high-quality enlargement from it up to 9 x 12 cm or more (the competitor was a camera with a frame format of 9 x 12 cm, the picture from which was printed without enlargement). The film frame format 18 x 24 mm doubled (36 x 24 mm) turned out to be convenient.

Since at that time all photographs were printed on photographic paper, for calculating the depth of field, the resolution of the eye at a distance of 25 cm from the print was taken, with some concessions, because. Not everyone has perfect vision. Thus, a circle of confusion of 0.03 mm was taken and, in accordance with this, the depth of field scale was applied to the lens. nine0005

Lenses

The first 20 Leica lenses were designed by Max Berek, who worked in a microscope factory in Wetzlar.

At that time, coating had not yet been discovered, so optical engineers tried to use the least number of glass elements in lenses (doublets and triplets were popular) in order to reduce the number of air / glass transitions and thereby reduce light loss in the lens and loss of image contrast . These aspirations forced the creation of lenses with "glues" of two or three lenses and a total small number of elements. There was no need to talk about a good correction of aberrations, both because of the limited correction tools (few lenses), and because of the lack of computational tools, the main of which was a slide rule. nine0005

The first Leica lens (1922) was the Elmax 50mm f/3.5 , designed by Max Berek.

The aberrations of the lenses were significant, so they, as sometimes today, were fought with geometric vignetting, cutting off the edge rays. They tried to achieve high resolution for that time more in the center of the frame, and the edges, as a rule, "suffered" than they could. This optical design policy at Leica has somewhat become permanent. The center of the frame had amazing resolution, but the edges were worse. For comparison, Carl Zeiss has always tried to make uniform resolution across the field of the frame, but some of their analogues of lenses Leica were inferior in resolution in the center of the frame.

At that time the company was still very young and small, without sufficient experience in the development of photographic lenses, so many of the optical designs of the Leica lenses of that time are derived from several basic ones (they were not alone in this approach).

of Elmax 'and Elmar 50/3.5 appeared, and from it already 3.5/35, 4/90,
6.3/105 and 4.5/135 mm.

In front of the , the Leica has always been a competitor to the Carl Zeiss . Older, bigger and more respected company. Therefore, they experienced some competitive pressure at that distant time, and when Carl Zeiss for the first time (1932) released a super-fast lens with a relative aperture of 1.5 (Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 50mm f / 1.5), Leica had to license the Xenon 50/1.5 lens to Schneider.

Leica IIIa + Xenon 50/1. 5

An interesting situation was with the enlightenment, which was also discovered at the factory Carl Zeiss in 1935 by Alexander Smakula. Leica said that they do not need enlightenment due to the use of special types of glass. However, they did use some special antireflection coatings or the like. Most often on internal elements, since the coatings of that time were easily damaged. And yet... Old lenses Leica are very susceptible to loss of contrast in side and back light, so it is recommended to look at lenses made after the 1970s.

During World War II Leica specialized in military and medical instruments and projectors (like all German camera and optic manufacturers). In addition, a series of specialized lenses were released that did not reach the civilian market. It is better to read Erwin Putz about this, as well as a more detailed history Leica .

Erwin Puts is a big fan of their optics and photojournalist. I visited the Leica factory and wrote several articles and books about the history of the company and the specifics of their optics. His books cost a lot (now I looked on Ebay - still the same, $ 500), but they are worth it. A couple of years ago, I almost bought it at an auction for 150usd, but I was outplayed at the last moment (the opponent was cunning), and now I'm biting my elbows.

Some time after the war there was an economic boom and Leica greatly improved its position in the photographic market. A lot of good lenses were released.
Everything was pretty rosy (except for the constant competition from the Carl Zeiss with their Contaxes) until the moment SLR cameras appeared on the market.

And it happened in 1949, when the Contax S reflex camera was released (it's nice that we owe this innovation to East Germany, not West), which looked like modern "reflex cameras", with a pentaprism on top. From this moment, you can count the beginning of the victorious march of SLR cameras and the beginning of the displacement of rangefinders. Sales of rangefinder cameras began to plummet over the next ten years. nine0005

In Leica made a big bet on rangefinder cameras, which were very strong, but the camera market has irreversibly shifted towards "DSLRs". Plus, strong pressure was added from Japanese manufacturers, who copied cameras and optics from German companies, but sold everything cheaper. And, I must say, the quality of Japanese optics was quite good, and the price was much lower.

Leica tried to rebuild with SLR cameras Leicaflex in 1964, but it was already too late (10 years is a long time for the photographic market!), because. the market was full of good SLR cameras made by the Japanese. The same Asahi Pentax released its “reflex camera” back in 1952.
In 1976, Leica launched a more successful series of SLR cameras Leica R3 in cooperation with Minolta (by the way, they collaborated with Minolta 9004 in terms of rangefinder cameras), but due to the constant presence in the ranks of catching up big profits could not be expected. nine0005

Nevertheless, the line of lenses for the Leica R SLR system has been released and is worthy of close attention. Understanding them is not so easy, because. Leica was among the “catching up”, constantly improving lenses, there were plenty of versions. You can buy externally identical lenses that will differ greatly in optical quality. For example, when the Leica experimented with multi-coating.

What do Leica M lenses give us today?

The Leica has developed unique lenses for rangefinder systems and has earned the laurels of the industry leader for a reason. Lenses Leica M are good not only for their bare technical parameters, but also for their approach to development. So, for example, comparing with lenses Carl Zeiss (nothing happened without Zeiss in the photo industry) under the system Leica M , we will find that they are different in ideology, design. You can philosophize for a long time on the topic of which is better, but everyone will choose their own, since the choice here is huge. Unless there are no macro lenses for rangefinder cameras (at least I don’t know). Separately, it must be said about their small size and ergonomics. Yes, they are small and comfortable. It is a pleasure to carry such "kids" with you. nine0005

It's immediately tempting to put the Leica M lenses on a mirrorless camera to get Leica optical quality and the ease of use of a mirrorless camera. But here we run into difficulties. Firstly, the Leica lenses were designed for rangefinder cameras and are not always suitable for mirrorless cameras due to the large internal element that sank into the camera.

Secondly, the film forgave a very sharp angle between the incident light beam and the film surface, and for a digital sensor this is critical and a colorshift effect may occur. nine0061 I would recommend using lenses Leica M on cameras native to them, since it is very pleasant to use film Leica M . They are very durable and compact, unlike modern mirrorless cameras, which are far from the workmanship of the Leica of those years.
Feel the spirit of a bygone era. Using the camera is very easy and pleasant.

Leica shooting experience

When we talk about handheld shooting, the first thing we think about is what shutter speed to set so that there is no “stirring” (blur) in the picture. nine0005

Now imagine that in 1925 the usual speed for film was ISO 20 - ISO 30. In cloudy weather, a typical shutter speed could be 1/10 second. Try to imagine it (50/[email protected], 1/10sec).
Black and white films reached ISO 100 in 1935, and color films much later, in 1957. ultraviolet and infrared filter, because The films were quite sensitive to IR and UV light spectrum. Even the first digital Leica were sensitive to IR, which in bright sunlight gave strange shades in the photo (for example, black clothes could turn purple).

An example of a survey with a large amount of IR and UV spectrum. Not taken with a Leica, but the effect will be similar, just slightly noticeable

This effect can be removed with the UV / IR cut filter from the B+W filter range.

The viewfinder Leica deserves a special mention. I have used other cameras before and somehow had no luck with rangefinders, they were so dim and cloudy that it was difficult to understand how accurately you focused. But it's a completely different thing with Leica ! I had a chance to try Leica M6 (it's on the table right now) and Leica M9 .
You feel that the veil has been removed from your eyes and finally allowed to look through clean glass. The viewfinder is admirable.

I read that other users painfully choose the camera with the brightest viewfinder (the Leica M models differ in this regard), but, as for me, the same Leica M6 , which does not seem to be considered the camera with the brightest viewfinder (M3 seems to be the lightest), more than enough to focus. nine0005

For ease of use, take a camera with a working TTL metering exposure - it simply and clearly shows whether to increase exposure, decrease it, or already OK. A pleasure to use.

Results

If you have the financial ability and time, buy the Leica camera and enjoy a good camera and no less good optics. This only applies to full-frame cameras and may apply to digital cameras with some reservations Leica . The best, of course, is a fully mechanical film, which, for example, is Leica M6 TTL .

I am not posting any pictures here from the Leica . You will find them in huge numbers on the Internet without me. But the main thing to remember is that the photographer is shooting, not the camera. Therefore, looking at beautiful pictures from a good photographer, you are unlikely to understand whether he shot on a Leica or FED. On the other hand, pictures are usually better for people who "love" the camera. And love should be mutual, and in the case of a camera, this means high reliability, good ergonomics, excellent lenses, etc. nine0061 Leica possesses all this, for which we thank her!

Good luck to everyone!

P.S.: (almost added “and good mood to you”, in Medvedev’s way). But in this case, this is inappropriate, because. the camera is the tool that we have to earn ourselves. The camera I have now is not my property. But I am sure that someday I will allocate money for it and I will have the same one.

Charged version of the flagship Xiaomi 13. Pro differs from the “standard” smartphone in an increased screen size and increased resolution (QHD + vs. FHD +). The camera has also undergone changes: now these are three rear modules from Leica, 50 megapixels each. Thanks to this, the quality of the photo has increased markedly. Also, unlike Xiaomi 13, the Pro version received a model in a ceramic case. Another difference is fast charging with a power of 120 W (against 67 W in the regular version 13). This allows the phone to charge fully in 19minutes. There is 50W wireless charging as well as 10W reverse charging.

The processor is exactly the same - a 4-nanometer Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen2, supported by a Qualcomm Adreno 740 graphics adapter and LPDDR5X RAM. There is no support for microSD memory cards in the smartphone, as well as a 3.5 mm jack for connecting wired headphones. But there is a latest generation Wi-Fi transmitter, Bluetooth with AptX HD support and an NFC module for contactless payment. An optical fingerprint scanner is hidden in the display. nine0005

The device's stereo speakers produce clear and high-quality sound.
