“Growing up in Australia, I was surrounded by an incredible landscape that captivated. When I was eight, my parents bought me a camera – and after a fateful snapshot of a spider web in the family garden – I was hooked. My travels have taken me to the most amazing locations around the world capturing landscapes that I could only once dream of shooting. I am so grateful for the beauty of this planet and I will never stop sharing it.“

Peter Lik - Photographer - JuicyWorld
yuicy world December 26, December 26, 1959, Peter Lik, Peter Lik, the most expensive photograph in the world, photographer
Peter Lik became famous for his panoramic photographs and images of nature. He is a self-taught photographer who learned photography through trial and error. Currently, Peter Lik has become one of the world's best-selling photographers. According to the New York Times, he sold over 100,000 photographs for $440 million.
Peter Lik - Coastal Dreams Framed Recess MountPeter Lik shoots both film and digital cameras and prints most of his photographs in-house on silver halide paper, which enhances luminosity and light sensitivity and helps bring out the vibrant colors in print.
Peter-Lik - A Morning In France Framed Recess MountPeter Lik describes himself as "the most famous photographer in the world", "the most sought after photographer" and "the most award winning photographer". At the same time, the Times considers the photographer, first of all, a seasoned businessman who has no interest in the art of others and is only interested in his own work. So, about the work of the famous Ansel Adams, Peter Lik says: “Just a beautiful shot of Yosemite. At the right time in the right place."
Peter Lik — Bridge to the Universe Recess MountPeter Lik's list of the TOP 20 most expensive photographs would include three shots. But, if the works of other photographers from this rating, as a rule, were sold at Sotheby's or Christie's auctions, then Peter Lik sold his works to "private persons" without an auction. So it was with Phantom (Ghost) sold for $ 6.5 million. Therefore, most ratings do not take into account the works sold by Peter Lik.

Peter-Lik — Phantom (Ghost)
Those who buy photos of Peter Lik are characterized as people with big money, ready to spend large sums, but very little understanding of the fine arts and the true value of what they buy.
Peter Lik - photo artistRegardless of how one feels about Peter Lik and his work, it is clear that he created a system that earns serious money from photography. In addition, the camera allowed him to develop an additional hobby - buying and selling luxury housing for tens of millions of dollars.
Peter Lik. Biography
Peter Lik was born December 26, 1959, in Melbourne, Australia, to Czech parents who emigrated to Australia after World War II. He took his first photograph at the age of 8 after his parents gave him a Kodak camera for his birthday. The picture showed cobwebs from the garden of the family home.
Peter Lik - Bella Vista Framed Recess MountAs a young man, Peter Lik took his camera with him on holidays and photographed the ocean and the countryside, as well as when he traveled out of town and into the Australian wilderness. He often made such trips accompanied by his photographer friend Michael Plumridge.
In 1984, Peter Lik visited the US for the first time and traveled the country for a year in an old van. While in Alaska, he was introduced to panoramic cameras and learned about large format photography.
Upon his return to Australia, Peter Lik continued to experiment with the panoramic format. In 1989 he returned to the US doing a landscape photography project in 50 states. Later, in 2003, Peter Lik released the photo albums "Coffee Table" and "Spirit of America" based on them.
In the early 1990s, he worked for the Queensland Department of Tourism, Australia, traveling around the state and photographing obscure areas. In 1994, Peter Lik moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he founded Lik USA. and founded his own publishing company, Lik Publishing.
Peter Lik - Crystal Mill Framed Recess MountThe company produced coffee tables, books, postcards and calendars with his work. In 1997 he published his first book, Australia: Images of a Timeless Land, and in 2010 published a 25-year retrospective book.
In December 2010, Peter Lik sold the photograph for $1 million to an anonymous collector, his most expensive sale to date. Photo "One" was taken on the banks of the Androscoggin River in New Hampshire. Peter Lik has stated that only one print of a photograph will ever be printed (as of 2011, the amount paid for "One" is ranked 11th in the ranking of the most expensive photographs).
After winning the 2010 Windland Smith Rice International Nature Photography Award for Nature in Nature, Ghost (taken in Antelope Canyon, Arizona) was selected as part of the May 2011 Nature Photography Exhibition in National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC.
The photo was taken in a slot canyon, sunlight coming through the hole above, creating a ghostly aura. And the photograph Inner World won the 2011 Windland Smith Rice International Award, and was exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution from April to September 2012.
In December 2014, Peter Lik revealed that he had sold a photograph called "Phantom" to an anonymous buyer for $6.5 million. Although there is no evidence that the photo was sold, Peter Lik's lawyer confirmed that the mystery shopper did indeed exists.

Peter Lik. The most expensive photographer in the world?
Back in December 2014, the photographer announced the most successful deal in the world of photography: a private collector bought his monochrome photograph called “Phantom” for a fantastic $6.5 million. In addition to this, the collector bought two more works by Peter Lik - "Illusion" ("Illusion") for 2.4 million dollars, as well as a picture of "Eternal Moods" ("Eternal moods") for 1.1 million dollars.
Peter is possibly the best-selling artist in the history of fine art photography. The deals, of course, were private, and the world community has only the vociferous testimony of the lawyers who accompanied the sales to prove that they really took place.
Peter Lik - Phantom
The Phantom photo was taken in northern Arizona, in Antelope Canyon. Among landscape photographers, this is a very popular place. The picture shows beams of light forming a mysterious haze that looks like a translucent ghost. This is a black and white version of a picture that was previously printed in color and was called "Ghost" (Ghost).
Peter Lik - Eternal Moods
But Phantom is not Lik's first "successful sale". In 2010, his photograph "One" (One) received the status of one of the most expensive photographs in the world, being sold at auction for $ 1 million.
Peter Lik - One
"One" is an image of a river with a reflection of colorful foliage of autumn trees on the water surface. This work is more like not a photo, but an impressionist painting. This successful shot was taken in New Hampshire, on the Androscoggin River. Peter Leek called it "One" because he thought it was a unique, unrepeatable, fleeting opportunity. Feeling unity with nature, the photographer took one single picture and printed only one photo from it. According to Leek, this partly explains its high price. Acquired by a private collector who wished to remain anonymous.
Peter Lik - Tree of the Universe
The in-demand photographer prints his work in Las Vegas, at his own 30,480 sq.m facility. Among the collectors of Leak's photographs are Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Celine Dion, Cindy Crawford, the Rolling Stones, architect Frank Gehry and many others. In addition to the record-breaking Phantom alone, Leek has sold about 100,000 of his photographs worth almost $450 million, according to The New York Times. His income averages $1.6 million a week. In the top 20 most expensive photographs, Peter Lik took four positions on the list at once.

Peter Lik - Night Over Brooklyn
Peter Lik began his career as a photographer in his native Australia. He was born in Melbourne in 1959 to Czech parents who moved to Australia after World War II. When he was 8 years old, his parents gave him the first camera - Kodak Brownie. In the conditions of a very modest family life, the camera became a particularly valuable gift for the boy. His first photograph is of a cobweb in a garden shimmering with dewdrops.
It was then that Peter Lik felt his connection with nature through photography. Growing up, he began to work in order to be able to buy the necessary photographic equipment and gear to travel the world and hunt for the most impressive shots. In the 80s, the self-taught photographer made several trips around the United States. After that, being conquered by the power of the landscapes of southwestern America, he decided to stay in the very center of the landscapes that Leek loved - in Las Vegas.
As for the camera, the photographer has never settled on any one brand. Peter has shot with Canon, Nikon, Hasselblad, Polaroid, Leica, Fuji, Pentax, Linhof, Phase One, and even a Samsung smartphone.
Peter Lik - Pele's Whisper
Today, internationally award-winning Peter Lik stands at the pinnacle of landscape photography. It is noteworthy that the photographer himself claims that he does not use computer editing programs for processing at all. The effect of presence in his pictures is achieved thanks to the author's perseverance, feeling and understanding the moment when it is necessary to press the shutter button, as well as the skillful use of filters in his work and the capabilities of modern photographic paper when printing. He never stops looking for the perfect shot. By studying the world around him, the photographer strives to show his vision of beauty and is guided by his incredible respect for Nature. Thanks to this unconventional approach to photography, he achieved his popularity and even came up with a system that allowed him to turn photography into a business. The camera even allows him to develop an additional profitable hobby - buying and selling luxury real estate worth tens of millions of dollars.
Peter Lik - Coolum Dawn in Time Panorama
Whether the record deal really took place, whether it is worth taking it into account and putting Peter Lik on a par with Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince and Andreas Gursky is difficult to say. The sensational announcement of the most expensive photo was the impetus for discussions and disputes about who Lik is - a photo artist or an entrepreneur? His work has awakened and spoken out many critics. The indiscreet nature of Peter Lik himself also played an important role.
He openly claims to be one of the best photo artists of his time. Critics, on the other hand, speak of him only as an entrepreneur, vehemently asserting that all the merits do not belong to him, but to the technique with which he works. And his photo "Phantom" is frankly considered another high-profile PR campaign.
But one cannot but take into account the fact that Peter Lik has a large number of prestigious awards and prizes in the world of photography. This obviously proves the skill of the photographer. And successful sales, according to Peter himself, only guarantee him that he will be able to continue doing what he loves.
Peter Lik - Ghost
Anyway, auction results are a much more objective and reliable barometer of the art market. And people are more likely to trust information from official sources than one-man statements about secret deals.
Peter Lik - Bella Luna
P.S.: Photograph of Peter Lik titled "Bella Luna", which was taken in 2011, is now sold at one of the auctions for 19.5 thousand dollars. And a few days ago, Lik's website published his new work called "Moonlit Dreams". In these two pictures you can see a completely identical image of the moon... Of course, the current situation has raised many questions in the world photographic community:
Is it possible to shoot the same phase of the moon twice? Is it even possible to take a picture with such an approximation and composition? Is it possible to get such a ringing sharpness on the lunar surface? Peter Lik himself has not yet commented on this similarity of the pictures, and "Moonlit Dreams", as before, is presented on his official website and is available for purchase.
