Shooting people underwater is always special shots that evoke amazing emotions. We talked about the intricacies and peculiarities of such shooting with a diving instructor, underwater photographer and part-time member of the Russian Photo Club - Pavel Karchevsky.

— Good afternoon, Pavel, tell us how did you get started in underwater photography?

— As an active diving instructor, at one point I decided to combine photography and scuba diving. Due to the fact that I like to photograph in the fashion style on land, I decided to transfer this style underwater.

— Why is model underwater photography such a rare occurrence these days?

- This direction is still new and has been developed relatively recently. This is mainly due to technical limitations - such shooting requires specialized equipment and / or a special studio. At the same time, there are a fairly large number of underwater photographers who shoot underwater and have no experience in model shooting, on the one hand, and a fairly large number of photographers who shoot fashion on land, but without experience in underwater photography, on the other hand. My passion for photography coincided with my old love for the water element.

— What kind of underwater shootings are there? Who usually orders them?

— Filming can be divided into private, when the customer is a client who orders shooting for himself, and large projects, where the customer is an organization (brand, store or, for example, an aquarium). Private filming is not very common, since even the cost of renting an underwater studio is several times more expensive than a regular studio. Of course, for large projects this is not an obstacle. Relatively recently, I finished shooting photographic material for the film "Sleeping Beauty" directed by Yana Nedzvetskaya. Film releases have already begun to be published in the press with my photos. I hope I will have the opportunity to tell our readers about these shootings in the future in a separate publication.

— How difficult is it to photograph and photograph underwater?

- Here the situation very much depends on what kind of shooting it is. So, for example, an unprepared person can shoot and shoot in an underwater studio. It is enough to be able to hold your breath for 10-15 seconds, this is enough to make beautiful shots. If we are talking about shooting in the oceanarium (I had experience shooting in a fresh exposition in Crocus), then the models need some freediving training, and a team of professional safety divers with the appropriate equipment must be present on the site. Filming in the Crocus Oceanarium took place at a depth of 4 meters with scenery and live fish, which, due to their size, the models were even afraid of at first.

— Do you only shoot underwater models or do you have landscape shots?

— I also just have footage of the underwater world. I travel a lot in the format of dive trips, and of course, I can't help but shoot. Of the things that have made the greatest impression lately, these are the shooting of cenotes in Mexico. The vast expanses of underground rivers, windows to the surface, and the mist of the deep layers of water looked simply amazing even for me, a person who has many years of diving experience.

- Pavel, what inspires you to shoot?

- I often draw inspiration from the works of Patrick Demarchelier, Helmut Newton. Paolo Roversi's technique of working with light is simply mesmerizing.

— What are your next creative plans?

— There are plans to organize underwater shooting of models at sea. The implementation of this direction will require significant resources and the participation of a professional team.

A photo session in water differs from other types of photography by its creativity and originality of shots. Splashes and drops combined with lighting effects create truly mesmerizing images. Choosing a location

In the water you can shoot children, attractive girls, muscular men, a couple in love or a bride and groom. The choice of a place for a photo shoot depends on the number of people involved in the shooting, their images and the subject of the pictures. To bring to life a romantic, funny or extreme story, you will need different locations. Suitable for a photo shoot in the water:

sea or ocean shore;
waterfall, river and lake;
fountain;
pool;
water park;
dolphinarium;
bathtub or jacuzzi;
aqua photography studio.

Shooting outdoors is more comfortable in summer. A deserted beach is suitable for shots against the backdrop of sunset. In winter and off-season, choose closed areas for photo projects. When determining a suitable place for a photo shoot in the water, do not forget about safety. Pay attention to the depth, purity and temperature of the water. It is desirable that there is a place nearby for changing clothes and preparing for a photoset. For bright fashion shots and complex fantasy images, head to the photo studio, where there is a specialized photo pool. There are all conditions for the most daring and original ideas in the water.

Accessories and clothes for a water photoshoot

The secret of beautiful pictures lies in the right outfits and accessories. Dresses made of light flowing fabrics, loose hair and shiny decor elements are suitable for interesting underwater effects. For romantic photos in the water against the backdrop of sunset, models can choose swimwear, pareos and summer sundresses. Shell necklaces and pearl strands complete the nautical look.

Wet fabric and flowy details will reveal some parts of the body, making a photo by the water feminine, alluring and even spicy. For thematic shots on the coast, use lifebuoys, boats, oars, anchors and helms as entourage. Funny family photos by the water will turn out to be harmonious if all family members are in the same vests and shorts.

Water poses

When posing models in water, the photographer has a number of things to consider. When immersed, the human body becomes shorter and changes its proportions. You need to enter the reservoir along the line of the joints. Poor placement of the arms or legs will make them wide, short and crooked.

The model can lie down, sit, run or stand during the photo session near the water. Hands are conveniently placed on the belt or thrown behind the head. Plunging under water along the line of the eyes, it will be possible to make unusual shots with reflection. Particularly impressive shots with splashes in motion are obtained.

If a couple in love is posing in front of the camera lens, you can try the following poses:

Water pose at sunset

To capture warm shots with beautiful hues, the water session should be done at sunset. When the sun shines at an angle, the skin of the models looks smoother and more tanned. A girl or a couple in love can be planted near the shore, put in the water or asked to lie down on the sand. During sunset, amazing glare and reflections appear on the sea. At this point, you can position your models against the sun for great silhouette shots.

Young girls with beautiful figures prefer photo sessions in the water in swimsuits. Models run along the sandy beach, dangle their feet in the water, swim or sit on the shore.
