The frame facilitates a versatile operation that suits non-technical users and can draw from a number of popular online photographic and social media sources. That, plus a built-in motion sensor,  mitigates the weakness of it not accepting any physical onboard images.

Nixplay Smart Photo Frame 10.1 inch Touch review: Price and availability

  • Nixplay 10.1 inch Smart Photo Frame Touch (Black) at Amazon for $133.99

Nixplay’s Smart Photo Frame 10.1 inch Touch is a rare bird in Nixplay land, as a touch screen digital photo frame among remote controls. The Nixplay frame itself costs $208 from Amazon , and its basic storage and cloud plan is free. However, unlike most other digital frames, Nixplay offers an opportunity for power users to add more cloud storage and variety to their frame experience via a Nixplay Plus subscription for $5 per month or $50 per year. With it, you can connect up to 10 frames in a single account (as opposed to five), alongside 50GB of storage and the ability to play up to one-minute video clips, as opposed to just 15 seconds.

The Nixplay Smart Touch Photo Frame comes in black, white, or Wood Effect, with clean lines that sit nicely in any room. The black frame, which we tested, also has some slick gold detailing around the edges and in the back that complement the honeycomb pattern. It’s not ostentatious or obvious, but we’re not sure it adds much in terms of style other than to differentiate this frame from the similar remote control one.

(Image credit: Tom's Guide)

On the back of the frame — which you can display in portrait or landscape mode on a tabletop or mounted — you must remove a small panel to access the socket. The Touch model also has a new adjustable base that fits directly on the frame. It’s certainly stable, and is more aesthetically pleasing than the gooseneck stand built into the remote controlled model of the frame, but it doesn’t give you as much angle flexibility.

Nixplay Smart Photo Frame 10.1 inch Touch review: Image Quality

Nixplay is famous for its high resolution displays and the Smart Touch photo frame does not disappoint with its resolution of 1280 x 800, which looks a lot better than it sounds, especially on a frame of that size. The frame features a full HD screen for beautiful playback, with an adjustable dynamic voice and motion sensor that turns the frame on or off automatically so there’s not too much of a good thing that wastes electricity. This frame also works with Amazon’s Alexa or Google voice commands.

(Image credit: Nixplay)

Images automatically switch between portrait and landscape when oriented vertically or horizontally. You can set your choice of transitions between photos, time intervals, and durations. You can also set the frame to hide or show captions, a clock, and new photo notifications. A Labs section lets you choose a Smart Face Framing setting, which emphasizes faces in your photos, but can also cut off large portions of the picture, depending on the composition.

The Nixplay Smart frame accepts photos that are remotely loaded and videos are limited to 15 seconds unless you upgrade to Nixplay’s Plus service.

Nixplay Smart Photo Frame 10.1 inch Touch review: Interface

Unlike other Nixplay frames we have reviewed, the new 10.1-inch Touch frame operates with a touchscreen panel that offers direct access and control of the frame. The touchscreen menus are easy to navigate and cover most settings. Just tap on the screen once and the resulting menu lets you view your photos and playlists or put the frame to sleep.

(Image credit: Tom's Guide)

There are multiple ways to view images such as Fit to Screen, Fill screen, Pan and Zoom, and more, which you can pair with a dozen transitions like Jump cut and Cross fade. You can also adjust the volume for videos and the screen brightness. You can program slide shows to switch out images in as little as five seconds or as long as an hour. It would be nice to have more interval variety, especially for the easily distracted where images rotate once or twice a day.

It’s easy to add, remove, and rearrange the pictures and videos in your Nixplay account. After the photos have been uploaded to the cloud, a notification on the Nixplay picture frame screen tells you when new photos arrive.

(Image credit: Nixplay)

Friends and family can also join in the fun of uploading photos to your frame via their own Nixplay account or they can email photos directly to the frame. You can tap into social media and online accounts too, including Facebook, Google Photos, Instagram, Dropbox, Flickr, or Verizon to add them to a playlist. Nixplay has a detailed online dashboard site you can log into for access from your computer to move images between frames, rearrange playlists, add and remove images, and generally track what’s getting sent and removed from your frames. Do not confuse albums with playlists: Nixplay stores the former, but will only show the latter.

Nixplay Smart Photo Frame 10.1 inch Touch review: App

With Nixplay, you can use the iOS or Android app to securely share photos and 15-second video clips from your phone to the frame

 Adding the frame to my existing account was simple, and the company offers abundant configuration settings for each frame. You can also remotely control images on the frame from the app. Nixplay also provides a service for ordering prints and enlargements.

Nixplay Smart Photo Frame 10.1 inch Touch: Verdict

Nixplay’s Smart Photo Frame 10.1 inch Touch is a great addition to the company’s impressive lineup of digital photo frames. It’s a compact midsize frame that blends nicely with any room, and its bright clear screen lets the personality of your images take charge of the visual landscape. It’s voice and motion activated sensor prevents any waste of electricity while its ease of use and variety of online inputs make it a great choice for far flung and technically challenged families.

Nixplay’s other non touchscreen frames, such as the Nixplay 10.1 Inch Smart Digital Picture Frame, feature a separate remote control that lets you avoid handling and impairing the look of the glass covering your photo, but since most features are comparable, choosing a touch frame is solely a matter of taste. It’s nice that Nixplay offers the choice, especially for customers who are loath to add another remote to their collection.

The frame, unconnected and with no internal storage, accepts images only via SD card or USB thumb drive.

If you read our full Atatat Digital Photo Frame review, you will find that the image quality is superb on its wide screen with realistic color and an extra wide viewing angle. Numerous settings allow for good user control in terms of screen brightness, transitions, and built-in utilities like a calendar and clock. The frame is nicely styled with an elegant narrow black bezel, and works well, as long as you adhere to the recommended component specifications.

Atatat Digital Photo Frame review: Price and availability

  • Atatat Digital Photo Frame (Black Download) at Amazon for $68.99

The Atatat Digital Photo Frame is a budget model available in black with a subtle carved design. At $65.99 on Amazon , it’s stuffed with great features including the ability to play music (with an earphone jack no less), a calendar, both SD and USB inputs, and a clock, minus the hassle of setting up Wi-Fi. It operates via a separate remote control to keep the screen pristine.

The Atatat Digital Photo Frame comes in black or white with elegant carving on its thin bezel. While it’s nothing fancy, it manages to stay unobtrusive without clashing with anything else in the room. At the eight-inch size, it is compact and will fit easily on a desk, nightstand, or living room end table. The three-foot cord is rather short, so unless you’re using an extension cord, you’ll have to be near an outlet. There is a small indent in the back for wall hanging, but because of its diminutive size we suspect it will be used mostly on the tabletop.

(Image credit: Tom's Guide)

Sitting on the tabletop is best done horizontally. While vertical photos adapt to the landscape orientation, the black bars on the sides can only be removed with radical cropping — a universal setting that will not be suitable for every picture. The frame comes with a puny peg for standing, which is steady enough in landscape position, but does not hold up at all in portrait orientation.

Atatat Digital Photo Frame review: Image Quality

Image quality is the standout feature of the Atatat frame. If you’re taking pictures with an iPhone or Android smartphone, you can be certain the images will show up looking crisp and clear behind the frame’s IPS 1920 x 1080p matte glass. The frame supports 178-degree wide viewing angle and 15 levels of adjustable brightness so that your images are visible from most places in the room.

(Image credit: Tom's Guide)

For movies, the tiny speakers sound respectable enough. You can also play music over a photographic slideshow, which is a very nice effect and works well. While photos and videos do not play in slideshows together,that shouldn’t be considered a drawback.

Atatat Digital Photo Frame review: Interface

The frame has an extensive setup pane that gives you lots of flexibility in your photo presentation. You can set the brightness, various slide show transitions, speeds, effects, and repeat mode. A breakpoint play mode picks up at the photo or video where you left off. The frame automatically adjusts the direction of the photo, which you can hang on the wall or place on a table. You can adjust the photos to better fit the 16:9 aspect ratio, options including cropping, stretching, auto, and original are available. I found I got the best results with the original setting, even if there was some blacked out space around the edges.

(Image credit: Atatat)

An auto on/off function where you can set a timer helps you save power. The frame takes just a couple of minutes to set up: there’s no software or helper app. Just turn it on and insert a memory card or USB drive (available separately) and the frame will instantly start cycling through your pictures.

(Image credit: Tom's Guide)

The remote control worked as expected most of the time, but sometimes it was unresponsive, and mostly it was slow, taking a few seconds to execute commands. If you don’t want to use the remote exclusively, a set of controls on the back of the frame lets you switch it on or off and here you can also access and adjust the settings. However, to switch modes from photo to movie, or SD to USB on the fly, you’ll need to use the remote. Having a clock and calendar adds convenience and sophistication to the frame.

Atatat has no online connectivity or networking capability. You can’t set up an email account to add photos to your frame or have friends or family contribute to it, unless you all live under one roof or nearby. The only way to get photos and movies onto this frame is via an SD card or a USB thumb drive, but even those must meet strict specifications -— you can’t just pick up any thumb drive or SD card you may have lying around. The SD card must be 128GB or under and the thumb drive must be 32GB formatted to FAT32, or your media will not play. Given those parameters, it would be nice if those helper items were included in the box. The site advertises an included SD card, but my review unit did not include one, and it was not listed on the packing list.

Atatat Digital Photo Frame review: Verdict

The Atatat Digital Photo Frame is one of the best out there when it comes to visual quality. It’s pure HD on matte glass makes your photos look vibrant without a flashy effect or artificially punched up colors. The images look fine grained with no noise or artifacts, maintaining the true color of the shot. The widescreen format, even on a small screen, gives the impression of being larger, and the extreme wide viewing angle enhances the visual effect. The Atatat is more expensive than the low-tech Aluratek 8-inch LCD Digital Photo Frame, which appeals to the same audience. However, the Atatat is well worth the extra money for its visual quality, photo and calendar utilities, remote and hands-on controls, not to mention the ability to play sound and video.

  • Which digital photo frame to buy
  • How to choose a digital photo frame

    1. Aspect ratio . The digital frame can offer a classic format (16:9 or 4:3) and non-standard options (3:2, 5:3, 16:10, etc.). Before choosing a specific model, look at the type of shots that prevail in the collection. To output Instagram pictures, for example, devices with a 1:1 ratio are suitable.
    2. Screen size . The most compact keyring frames were only 1 inch in size. But they did not take root on the market, like other small solutions. Now solutions with a diagonal of 7-8 inches prevail. 10-inch frames are in demand. The maximum size available on the Russian market is 21.5 inches.
    3. Image quality . In order for the image to be high-definition, the photo frame must offer high resolution. A good margin of brightness is also important, because if direct sunlight hits a dim screen, the photos will not be visible. Of the important parameters, we also note the contrast (the larger it is, the better).
    4. Support for formats. Some digital photo frames offer the ability to display only images, and the simplest devices only support JPEG format. More advanced ones also handle PNG, GIF, other types of graphic content, can play audio files and even videos.
    5. Additional options . In addition to the direct obligation (photo output), frames may offer optional features. For example, an on timer (so that the frame starts when you come home / to the office), clock display, alarm clock, remote control, image zoom and other functions.

    Best 7-8 inch Digital Photo Frames

    This is the most popular display size. Such electronic photo frames are perfect for placing on the table, and due to the small diagonal, even with a modest resolution, individual pixels will not be noticeable on the screen. Five interesting models are available in this category, and DIGMA offers especially interesting options.

    1. Ritmix RDF-828

    The TOP of digital photo frames starts with a compact, but in all respects excellent model from Ritmix. The device is equipped with an 8-inch display and has a stylish design. The frame of the gadget is made of wood, so the RDF-828 will look especially good on the desktop. The frame supports external drives, can play video and audio, and the latter can be played along with a photo demonstration. Additional functionality of the popular photo frame model is standard for its class: an alarm clock and a calendar. Convenience of management is provided with the complete control panel. This is probably the best frame for your money.

    Advantages:

    • stylish appearance;
    • quality assembly;
    • excellent functionality;
    • attractive price;
    • Light wood frame.

    Disadvantages:

    • large photos hang up.

    2. DIGMA PF-733

    Good photo frame equipped with a 7-inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The resolution of the matrix installed in the photo frame is 800 × 480 pixels, and the maximum brightness and typical contrast are 300 cd/m2 and 300:1, respectively. There is no built-in memory in the PF-733 model, so to view photos you will need either a memory card or an external drive connected via a USB port.

    The frame allows you to adjust the image in several modes: one, two, three and four shots at the same time. When connected to a network, the device automatically activates a single slide show, which can be changed using the remote control.

    Advantages:

    • reasonable price;
    • stability;
    • possibilities;
    • color rendering;
    • viewing angles;
    • good brightness.

    Weaknesses:

    • build quality;
    • cable length.

    3. Ritmix RDF-710

    Inexpensive digital photo frame made of black matte plastic. The design of the RDF-710 model is as strict as possible, so it will not distract attention from the displayed content. The frame screen has a diagonal of 7 inches and a resolution of 800 × 480 pixels, which is quite acceptable for its price. The device rests on a massive leg, which houses the controls, a simple speaker, a socket for connecting the power supply, a card reader for SD flash drives, and a USB Type-A port. Among the photo display functions, zoom and image rotation are provided. The Ritmix RDF-710 cannot play video, which is excusable given the positioning of the device.

    Advantages:

    • clock and calendar;
    • image quality;
    • strict appearance;
    • bright colors;
    • easy operation.

    4. Rekam DejaView SL885

    The review of photo frames continues with the most affordable model - DejaView SL885 from Rekam. Despite the low cost, the photo frame offers good performance. A good 8-inch display has a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 300:1 contrast ratio.

    Since we have an affordable model, its functionality is limited to displaying photos. The frame can only read the JPEG format.

    Matrix resolution 1024 by 768 pixels. The maximum screen brightness is 300 candela. The weak point of the device is the viewing angles: horizontally they are about 150 degrees, vertically even less. But otherwise there are no remarks.

    Advantages:

    • image quality;
    • robust housing;
    • minimalistic design;
    • easy handling.

    Disadvantages:

    • modest viewing angles.

    5. DIGMA PF-833

    Next in line is perhaps the best digital photo frame in terms of price and quality. Here you can not only view photos, but also a clock, an alarm clock and even an MP3 player. Moreover, a 3.5 mm jack located on the case will allow you to connect acoustics to the frame. Of course, the built-in electronics will not provide incredible sound, but it will be enough for buyers with low needs. The DIGMA frame is available in black and white. For installation, you need to screw the leg (or you can hang the device on the wall). The controls are located at the back, but they are not very convenient to use (especially when mounted on a nail). Therefore, the kit also includes a small remote control.

    Advantages:

    • you can connect acoustics;
    • good viewing angles;
    • affordable price;
    • built-in speaker 2 W;
    • handy remote control.

    Disadvantages:

    • the quality of the plastic case;
    • inconvenient control on the frame.

    The best digital photo frames from 10 inches

    Larger devices are suitable for placement near the bed, in the living room or in other places where there is enough free space for such photo frames. This category is also represented by five gadgets. As well as among compact models, the DIGMA and Ritmix brands are in the lead here, but they do not offer the largest diagonal.

    1. DIGMA PF-105MS

    Let's move on to the rating of digital photo frames with a large diagonal. And the first in this list is the PF-105MS model from DIGMA. The diagonal of its screen is 10.1 inches, and the resolution is 1024 × 768 pixels. Alas, it is impossible to call the matrix ideal, but the image is quite tolerable. Contrast is standard for its class - 400:1. Screen brightness is 250 candela. Yes, this is not too much, but it is unlikely that the photo frame will be in direct sunlight. By the way, brightness, saturation and contrast in the settings can be adjusted to your liking. Also among the available options are a calendar, clock, timer and alarm clock.

    Advantages:

    • musical accompaniment;
    • quality image;
    • wide format support;
    • can be wall-mounted;
    • remote control;
    • attractive design.

    Disadvantages:

    • no built-in memory.

    2. Ritmix RDF-1026

    If you're looking for something classic, then Ritmix's RDF-1026 multimedia photo frame is a great option to buy. The case of this device is made of natural wood, painted in a dark color, so the frame will look especially good in a classic or modern interior.

    The frame supports a huge number of formats, not only photos, but also audio and even video. You can play them from USB-drives, flash drives.

    Quality photo frame comes with a superb 16:9 aspect ratio screen. Of the main advantages of this model, it is worth noting the high contrast ratio of 600: 1, which provides a noticeable difference between the darkest and lightest areas. Also, the device boasts several photo output options and an alarm clock.

    Advantages:

    • maximum viewing angles;
    • excellent IPS-matrix;
    • attractive design;
    • additional options;
    • wide format support.

    Disadvantages:

    • not very high brightness (200 nits).

    3. DIGMA PF-1033

    Another cheap photo frame from DIGMA. Formally, the PF-1033 model is an enlarged version of the PF-833, but with minor changes. The image contrast of this unit is 400:1 and the brightness is 250 cd/m2. There is support for all common image, audio and video formats. But because of the simple hardware, the gadget will not cope with weighty files. There is no built-in memory in one of the best frames according to user reviews, but both USB drives and high-capacity SD cards are supported. The device can be hung on a wall or placed on a table. It is more convenient to manage, as in the case of the younger modification, using the complete remote control.

    Advantages:

    • good image;
    • low cost;
    • quality assembly;
    • wall mount;
    • scheduled activation.

    4.

    Ritmix RDF-1014

    Speaking about which frame is better to buy, if the design of the device is important to you, we cannot but mention the RDF-1014 model. The Ritmix company approached the design of this device in an original way. It will especially appeal to travelers who love to review their photos from various trips. The diagonal of the screen in the RDF-1014 is 10.1 inches, and its brightness reaches quite decent 300 candela per square meter. Due to the fairly good contrast, the image is very juicy. The frame has its own memory, a USB port and the ability to install SD drives.

    Pros:

    • beautiful design;
    • thin;
    • picture saturation;
    • plays video;
    • a good margin of brightness.

    Drawbacks:

    • not the best viewing angles;
    • does not read "heavy" photos.

    5. ESPADA E-21A

    And, finally, the largest photo frame in our rating and the market as a whole. The cost of the E-21A model from the ESPADA brand can be compared with a tablet, and not the worst. But the screen diagonal here is much larger - as much as 21.5 inches. The resolution here is appropriate (Full HD), but the brightness is quite typical for the category it occupies.

    The manufacturer installed 4 GB of its own memory into the frame at once, but even this may not be enough for high-resolution photos.

    Of course, the device can also be placed on a table, but it is much more convenient to hang it on the wall. The frame can play video, but only two formats - AVI and MP4. To output sound in the E-21A, two simple speakers with a power of 2 W each are available. And the frame also offers an HDMI input, allowing you to output photos directly from your computer.

    Advantages:

    • video input;
    • high-quality picture;
    • huge display;
    • high resolution;
    • functionality.

    Disadvantages:

    • high cost.

    Which digital photo frame to buy

    Among the compact models, DIGMA showed itself best. If you want to find the most affordable option, then take a closer look at products from Rekam. But choosing the best digital photo frame with a large diagonal will be easier, because manufacturers simply do not offer a large selection of options. DIGMA and Ritmix are also leaders in this segment. But the largest diagonal can be found at ESPADA. True, the cost of the E-21A model is quite high and not everyone can afford it.
