What You Need to Know About Buying Photo Paper
There are so many types and so many varieties of photo paper, but all photo papers can be grouped into four categories: matte, semi-gloss, luster, and glossy.
High gloss or glossy paper mimics the photo paper offered by printing labs. High gloss or glossy is widely used for printing vibrant bright images which feature a cheerful mood. If you’re printing a vibrant landscape shot with beautiful colors in bright tones, a glossy photo paper is probably what you should use.
Matte paper offers a textured surface, which is the opposite of glossy.
Matte comes in different variations of textures. Some are flat, almost textureless to the point of being smooth. Others are more textured. But they are never glossy or reflective. A matte paper will set the right mood for a darker, somber photo. It is a great choice for black and white prints.
Semi-gloss paper sits somewhere in the middle between glossy and matte. They are sometimes textured and can be shiny, though not as much as the high-gloss variations. Because of this, semi-gloss papers are perfect for subjects where you need to limit the amount of glare.
Luster, or lustre in British English, is an interesting paper type that is sometimes called Pearl or E-Surface by print labs. Luster is a bit of a middle ground between matte and glossy, but still less shiny than semi-gloss. Luster is textured but not as textured as matte, and the texture is really only noticeable under certain lighting conditions.

Depending on the paper type that you pick, you will need to pair it with the right kind of ink.
Matte paper is best printed on with pigment ink and glossy and semi-glossy paper is best printed on using dye-based inks.
So, choose your photo paper carefully by considering what you need to print!
Alongside paper type, there are also color brilliance ratings to consider. The TAPPI Scale, which is the color brilliance rating for inkjet photo paper, measures how bright the colors on a paper are reflected.
Always go for a paper that has a TAPPI rating of around 90. Anything above 90-92 and it means that the paper contains artificial fluorescent material that reflects light. Though the whiteness of such paper is brilliant and colors are more saturated with deeper blacks, in the long run, the ink fades more quickly. This is because the artificial whitening (or fluorescence agents) will start to wear off and the paper will revert back to its normal, creamy color appearance.

A heavier, thicker paper gives the same feel as a photo that has been printed at a lab, but not all printers can handle thicker papers because it’s more likely to jam.
Now, the awesome thing about the HP Advanced Photo Paper is that its lighter weight allows it to be used in a huge array of printers with ease. Although it may lack the hardiness of the other paper types, this is made up for with excellent functionality.
This paper is glossy and comes with some amount of water and smudge resistance that HP is known for, as well as the instant ink-drying technology.

CANON Photo Paper - flawless results and color perfection
Photo paper for printing on CANON inkjet printers Selecting the right paper for your subject is the key to a perfect print.
My favorite Pro Luster LU-101 is an embossed semi-gloss paper. It is able to emphasize the richness of the colors of the frame. The print is bright, rich and vibrant. The illustration shows that Pro Luster LU-101 has some glare. This gives the plot a kind of gloss. Such prints look equally good both in a frame under glass and in an album. The paper does not create harsh reflections in bright light.
And because of the specific texture, there are almost no fingerprints left on it. In my opinion, this is the most versatile of the Canon photo papers.

At home I have a photograph dear to my heart, printed in a professional Moscow photo lab and framed in a baguette there. Unfortunately, it does not look the best because of the waves on the photo paper. And every day, with its imperfection, it hurts the perfectionist living inside of me. And in another room, there is a photo that was printed as part of the Canon PIXMA PRO-100 printer test last year. As you can see, paper Canon Pro Luster LU-101 looks perfect in a baguette, without waves and bumps. It does not warp during storage, due to the high density of the substrate and high-quality materials.

Professional matte paper 9031 PM-1 Pro Premium (right) has a smooth matte texture reminiscent of classic barite photo paper. Portraits look very good on her, especially black and white ones. The matte texture smooths out excessive print contrast. Pro Premium Matte is pleasant to hold in your hands, feel the texture with your fingers. Let me share a little life hack: photo A3 printed on this paper will undoubtedly increase your authority in front of the viewer, self-esteem, and at the same time the fee. Because in this age of gloss, people have almost forgotten how real matte photo papers look and feel. They have become exotic!
Museum Etching FA-ME1 for even more tactile pleasure. No wonder the word "museum" appears in its name. The dense, rough texture has something of a watercolor paper designed to conquer museums and art galleries.
It does not glare, ideal for artistic printing. Feel free to print and send the work to the exhibition. This paper is also not afraid of fingerprints, tested by children!

And here is the same story printed on paper Pro Platinum PT-101 . The feeling is completely different, but no less pleasant. This paper has no texture, it is absolutely even, smooth. The photo looks like a lollipop. Expensive, glossy lollipop. You know this unpleasant effect in prints from photo labs: if you look at a right angle, everything is fine, but if you change the viewing angle, there are color distortions or metallic shades. Thanks Lucia ink does not have this effect, we see a uniform image.
Plus Glossy II PP-201 subjectively feels a practical, versatile paper. It is distinguished primarily by a glossy surface. Contrasting scenes look great on such paper.
The picture is similar in perception to Pro Luster , but this paper is more likely to catch glare from light sources and therefore convey bright scenes more emotionally.

In order not to be known as a “shoemaker without boots”, you can also print your portrait on thick matte paper. I choose paper Pro Premium Matte PM-101 for it and, of course, the black and white version.
