DIY Cake Smash Photos

What better way to celebrate your baby’s first birthday than by taking some fun cake smash photos!

But what if the expense of the baby’s 1st birthday present including the party, the cake, and the decorations, has exhausted your budget and there’s nothing left for a professional cake smash photoshoot?

Or maybe you even tried to do the cake smash pictures yourself already… and got a little Pinterest fail situation happening?

You probably couldn’t put your finger on exactly what was wrong with your photos… but you just know it fell flat!

With our 10 easy professional tips, complemented with stunning photos taken by Justine Eacott, Advanced Photography Course graduate… we will show you exactly how to DIY beautifully lit, beautifully styled, gorgeous cake smash photos!

1.

Props & Colour

Colour

Between props, the cake and the baby, there’s a lot going on when taking photos for a cake smash photoshoot. You can avoid adding visual chaos in the form of jarring colour combos by using a color scheme and choosing analogous colours. Analogous colours are next to each other on the colour wheel and when used together, create a harmonious overall look.

Justine has used pink and apricot through to yellow and green, against a soft apricot backdrop. Note that her use of the green is minimal and works only to lift the other colours.

Props

I get it. Your baby has a lot of special items you would like to include in your cake smash pictures.

When looking for how to do cake smash photography it can be tempting to keep adding elements to the shot, but when it comes to props, always follow the less is more rule. In the same way that clutter can cause distractions, so can too many props.

Choose 2-3 items and stop there. Remember, a cake smash photoshoot is all about your baby and this milestone… let the baby and the cake be the heros!

The less elements that work for attention, the more powerful and striking the resulting photos will be!

That being said, if you are really having a hard time with bub, I recommend a few small natural wooden toys like cars or horses.

Lots of balloons, but the elements are limited so it absolutely works – flowers, balloons, done.

Clothing

The best option for taking great cake smash photos is no clothes other than a nappy.

Why?

Less to clean up!

But also, it’s as simple as you can get. There is nothing more distracting in these types of photos than an outfit with multiple colours, fabrics, logos, and pictures.

If it’s winter, it might be too cold for the baby to go bare chested, even indoors. In that instance, keep clothing simple.

As an example, for this cake smash photoshoot session Justine used a simple white bodysuit that blends. The motif on the bodysuit is subtle, relevant, and sticks to the colour theme. As a bonus, the “one” on her bodysuit tells part of the story.

2. Compositions

Storytelling

Written stories have a beginning, middle and end. They describe the scene and talk about details.

When we approach photography in the same way, we use our images to tell the story. The best way to do that is by taking a variety of wide shots which set the scene, and some detailed shots to add that extra layer of information.

Take your shots wide…

…get in close and focus on other elements including (and especially) the cake…

…and whilst you’re there make sure to grab some beautiful portrait shots as well!

Perspective & Angles

Get variety in your photos by shooting from lots of different angles and positions.

This tip is one of the easiest and most powerful things you can do in child photography, including when taking cake smash photos – get down low to eye level with your subject. It’s the best way to ensure good eye contact, and makes it easier to engage your subject.

Related: Get Down to Their Level

If shooting from your standing height, make sure they look up at you… the alternative is a confusing photo of the top of their head!

3. Set Up

Floor

Maybe it’s obvious… but when looking for how to do a cake smash photoshoot at home, don’t choose to set up on your expensive persian rug or your shag carpeting!

Set it up instead on tiles or floorboards and save yourself the insanity of trying to get electric blue buttercream or chocolate cake out of white carpet!

Backdrop

The easiest backdrop by far is simply a plain light coloured wall.

If you don’t have a plain wall near good natural light, try an inexpensive DIY cake smash backdrop.

For this session, Justine answered both the floor and backdrop issues by using a long piece of vinyl and attaching it to the top of a backdrop frame with clips.

As far as DIY backdrops go, vinyl isn’t the cheapest option. But it’s an awesome backdrop for so many reasons… cake spills just wipe off, it doesn’t wrinkle, doesn’t require ironing, it’s sturdy so it drapes perfectly, and it’s easy to store (just fold it!).

4. Background Clutter

Eliminating all background clutter is one of the most powerful things you can do not only when taking cake smash photos but whenever you want to elevate your photos from snapshots to looking professional.

Clutter makes our photos look chaotic because it adds too many extra elements and  draws the viewer’s eye away from the main subject.

Indoors, clutter can come in many forms like stray toys, a basket of laundry in the background or a pile of newspapers on the dining table.

If you can’t move the clutter, move your subject.

With that in mind, think about clutter whenever you’re styling and deciding how many elements to include. No matter how pretty the elements you’re adding look… too many of them and it just becomes clutter. Your beautiful baby and the cake are the subjects, not all the other things around.

Related: Clear the Clutter

5. Natural Light

For a light, bright, cheerful look that suits cake smash photos so well, use soft natural light. As a bonus, it’s easy to use and easy to find!

Soft light wraps gently and evenly around our subject and is free from harsh shadow lines.

You can either do your cake smash outdoors or you’ll find it indoors near large windows and doorways. If the light coming through your window is too harsh, it may cause sharply defined shadow lines which can be unflattering. If that happens, diffuse the light through the use of a sheer fabric such as chiffon or curtain netting.

Make sure you turn any overhead lights off as they will interfere with your natural light source and cast unwanted hard light shadows.

6. Get Help

Having a second pair of hands could come really handy when taking cake smash photos. If your baby is crawling, your helper can ensure she or he stays confined in the cake smash location and doesn’t drag bright blue buttercream throughout the house!

You can also ask them to grab your baby’s attention from time to time so that you can get some eye contact shots. They can use bubbles, peek a boo, etc but when doing this, ask them to position themselves directly behind you. This way the baby will look in the direction of your lens.

7. Timing

Party

If you’re having a party for your baby’s first birthday, schedule to take your cake smash photos another day. Parties are busy, tiring, with many distractions and lots of people around.

Hungry

What happens if you put food in front of a baby who just had a full meal 5 minutes ago? When organizing your cake smash photoshoot make sure your baby is hungry enough to taste the cake with enthusiasm!

Tired

Why would you schedule your cake smash pictures for 3pm when your baby is tired and cranky and ready for their afternoon nap?

Choose a time of day when your baby is usually feeling their happiest, for the best chance of happy expressions!

8. Clean Up

Don’t waste the clean up after a cake smash photoshoot. It’s a perfect opportunity for more great photos!

Use a container as a makeshift bathtub, but try to avoid plastic tubs as they don’t tend to be very photogenic.

This large metal bucket used by Justine is a fantastic option.

If you use a small tub, the baby has no choice but to sit or kneel, ensuring they remain at eye level with your lens. It also prevents the baby from slipping under water and leaves your hands free to shoot.

Add elements such as a rubber ducky, flowers, sliced fruit… the options are endless. But remember, keep it simple, less is more!

9. Settings

Exposure

Once you’ve finished with the set up, choose your settings and take some test shots. If you’re happy… then bring the baby in!

The last thing you want is for the baby to start without you as you fiddle around trying to get your settings right!

Shutter Speed

Whether you’re indoors or out, I recommend a shutter speed of 1/400 as a minimum. This will eliminate unwanted blur from the speed of motion you could expect when doing a cake smash photoshoot.

If shooting outdoors, you may have enough light to go even faster. The faster the better!

Aperture

Choose an aperture that is wide enough to blur your background, but narrow enough to help you nail focus given the baby may be moving a bit. If you feel confident with your ability to focus as very wide apertures, you could open up to around f/2.

I recommend trying around f/3.5 but bear in mind the resulting depth of field will vary a little depending on the distance between baby and cake, and your focal length.

Then choose an ISO to balance the other two settings and achieve a nice light exposure. Given your fast shutter speed and indoor location, you will probably need to push your ISO.

10. Gear

A DSLR you can use in manual mode is essential so that you can control the shutter speed and aperture.

If you’re shooting in auto mode, take control of your camera and take photos you love by switching to manual mode.

I recommend a lens focal length of around 35-50mm. This range is perfect for cake smash photos as it enables you to get in close whilst still including the set up.

DIY Cake Smash Photos At Home "How To Guide" – Cenzerely Yours

UPDATED : APRIL 22, 2020

Planning a DIY cake smash at home for baby’s first birthday?

The newest trend when it comes to celebrating your little one’s first year milestone is a cake smash!

What is it you ask? Basically you sit baby in front of a cake and give them free reign.

What could go wrong?

A lot, apparently.

Ours was super fun and so so memorable but I sure learned a few things along the way.

As usual, I didn’t plan ahead and threw something quick together last minute and had quite the mess to clean up afterwards.

Here’s a few helpful tips to help you plan and execute the perfect diy cake smash at home!

Disclaimer: as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This comes at no extra cost to you.

Pick a Cake Smash Theme

Picking a theme for your cake smash can help get you organized. It can help you choose colors and props to create a more cohesive and pretty picture.

You don’t want every random item you can find in your cake smash photos.

It can be as simple or fancy as you want but pick a theme. It doesn’t need to be difficult.

Cake smash themes that have been popular over the last few years include things like: unicorn cake smash, Mr. ONEderful, the ever popular princess theme or even just color themes.

I ,myself, kept it simple, my theme was just blue.

This let me organize something quickly as I wasn’t searching for anything too specific, just pretty blue hues.

You can pick up a little cake smash kit like we did. It makes the job a lot easier since everything is already color coordinated for you.

We chose the Ginger Ray collection.

Take a look:

Ginger Ray Pink and Gold Girls First Birthday Cake Smash Kit

Ginger Ray Blue and Gold Boys Cake Smash First Birthday Kit

I chose this one because I just really like the simplicity and thought it looked beautiful!

It came with:

♡ One Today Gold Script Sign

♡ Blue and gold tassel garland (some assembly required here but it was super easy – although I will say you have to be careful with the gold ones as they can easily rip if you don’t handle them carefully)

♡ Birthday hat

♡ 5 Confettie Balloons

Here’s a few more awesome options I came across:

Boy’s Cake Smash Banner + Crown

Full Set Baby Boy Cake Smash Kit

This one looks like the one pictured above but just has more stuff like garlands, balloons and more decorations.

Here’s the girl version:

Girl’s Firt Birthday Cake Smash Complete Kit: Pink & Gold

There’s actually so many themed ones to choose from too!

Check out these ones for some inspo:

Dinosaur Themed Cake Smash Set

Carnival Circus Cake Smash Kit

By the way, if you’re going the circus route- look at these adorable ONE letter circus themed sign prop.

Watermelon Themed Kit

Mermaid Themed Kit

I think this kit is a little lack lustre. I woud opt for this one instead even though it’s not first birthday themed and maybe just add a #1 helium balloon.

Jungle Safari Themed Cake Smash Kit

St. Patrick’s Lucky ONE Themed Cake Smash Kit

If you’re still stuck, you can check out this cake smash photography page for some more theme inspiration.

Get Helpers For Your DIY Cake Smash

If you’re anything like me, asking for help doesn’t come easy. I generally prefer to do things myself because I hate to make anyone feel obligated but this isn’t one of those things you can do successfully by yourself.

I recruited the hubby to assist.

When it comes to baby’s cake smash, the more the merrier, but to a point.

Sometimes having too many people in the room (espcially a lot of people baby isn’t familiar with) can hinder the party.

It may make your little one shy away and cling on to you for dear life.

I suggest having at least 1 or 2 extra hands on deck if you want to avoid ending up with a camera covered in frosting. But choose people who baby is familiar and comfortable with.

Delegate photography to one person so you’re free to make silly faces and encourage that sweet little laugh you’re after.

Having at least one set of clean hands available means you won’t be getting cake everywhere.

Pick The Right Cake For Your First Birthday Cake Smash

One of the most important things to consider with your cake smash is the cake itself.

Whether you’re opting for a fancy-smancy $300 theme cake or something a little more budget friendly, keep these tips in mind.

Opt for a creamy frosting as opposed to fondant.

Fondant looks beautiful because it delivers a clean crisp perfect looking cake.

This is better for an event where the cake has to hold up for a while, like maybe the offcial first birthday party.

However, we want a cake that’s got creamy, soft, touchable, spreadable frosting that gets between your toes (like butter cream) for a cake smash.

You wanna get those cake smears all over the face, it makes for adorable pictures.

The other thing to consider is color.

What kind of photos do you want?

I love seeing bright beautiful colors smooshed all over baby’s face. It adds contrast and interest to your photos as opposed to just white frosting.

We opted for a $10 butter cream cake that we ordered at the local grocery store and it worked perfectly.

If you’re feeling particularly ambitious you can even try to DIY the cake yourself.

I loved the look of this DIY giant cupcake cake smash cake.
Check out the video if you want to learn how to make your own.

Another tip: I love chocolate but maybe not for a cake smash because brown smears on the face…I don’t know.

I think bright and light colors just look better and photograph really well.

One more pro tip I want to mention: serve the cake at room temperature!

Make sure to take your cake out before the cake smash and let it come to room temperaure. Your kiddo probably won’t appreicate a cold hard cake.

Say Bye-Bye to the Highchair

I know a lot of people do the entire cake smash right on the baby’s highchair and contain the mess that way but I think setting up your photo area on the ground creates much nicer photos and gives you a bigger area to create a nice background and display a few props.

This just means a little extra prep on your part. I got a disposable vinyl tablecloth for the floor so we could just scrunch it up and toss it when we were done.

No muss, no fuss.

This lets you get right up close and personal, you can get pictures of their little hands and feet all covered in cake.

Totally worth the little extra prep IMO!

Make A DIY Cake Smash Video

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much is a video worth?

I absolutely love my cake smash photos but what is so near and dear to my heart is our cake smash video.

It’s nothing fancy, just a little home movie we made using our smartphones and then a simple edit on the computer with free editing software.

It creates a memorable keepsake you can show your little one when they get a little older.

The moment is over so quickly, I’m glad I took a video so I can replay this memory over and over (as well as share the moment with family and friend ).

We kept our cake smash small as we didn’t want our little bug feeling camera shy with too many people in the room, this way everyone else was able to witness the fun without having to be there.

If you’re curious, you can take a peek at ours below. This video still gives me all the feels.

PRO TIP: hold your camera horiztontally when recording! I didn’t and then you end up with those black bars on either side.

Lighting Is Key For Baby’s Cake Smash Photos

Lighting is everything!

There’s no point going through all this trouble just to end up with dark pictures because you didn’t consider lighting.

I totally forgot to consider the light.

We thought it would be a fun way to celebrate his birthday by having a midnight cake smash, only problem, no sunlight.

Without proper lighting your photos will need a lot of editing.

Lucky for me, I have a set of professional lights from my YouTubing days.

This worked for a last minute improv solution but I would have much preferred natural light.

Photos taken in natural lighting just look much better so plan ahead. Maybe even an outdoor cake smash.

The Best Camera For Your DIY Cake Smash

I just wanted to mention that obviously, you’ll get the best results if you’re using the best camera.

At the time that we did our cake smash, I dind’t invest in a DSLR high quality camera. I just used my Iphone and I was pretty happy with the resutls.

Later that year, we decided to take the plunge and actually invest in a good camera since I ended up taking around 5000 photos of my little guy on my phone that year!

Afte buying our digital camera I was actually so bummed I didn’t invest in one sooner. The picture quality isn’t even comparable.

After doing a ton of research we settled on the Sony A6000 Mirrorless camera.

I’m absoutely in love with this thing! It takes DSLR quality photos but without all the bulkiness because it’s mirrorless.

It’s nice and compact so we actually take it with us when we go out.

I only wish I had bought it earlier and used it for our cake smash. It’s definitely one of the best investments we’ve made for capturing our little guy’s precious ‘firsts’.

If you grab one with a tripod it’s super helpful because it allows you to get in the photos too. You can take the picures remotely using your phone + the sony app.

Cake Smash Background and Photoshoot Props: Less is More

It’s easy to get carried away with your background and props, I say keep it simple. You don’t need too many things, it gets too busy and ends up looking more cluttered.

Select a few key pieces that really represent your theme.

We kept it super simply with just some balloons , a happy birthday sign and a little tassel banner.

The focus stays on baby instead of a crowded background. Too many props and your little one might be too distracted to think about the cake.

In this situation, I think less is more.

You’re prop is going to depend on you’re theme of course but here’s a few ideas:

♡ Birthday Crown (Girls) (Boys)

♡ ONE Gold Script Cake Topper

♡ First Birthday Balloon Box Display

♡ 12 Months Milestones Birthday Banner

♡ Birthday Milestones Customizable Chalkboard

DIY Cake Smash Outfit For Baby

Don’t forget your baby’s cake smash OOTD!

This is a great time to have fun with clothes.

Obviously don’t pick something that you’re planning on wearing again for something special in case you can’t get those stains out.

We wanted to keep his top half bare for more cake smears so we opted for a cute pair of pants and red suspenders.

You can put something together yourself or head over to itsy for an awesome (although kinda expensive) cake smash outfit.

Check out some of these adorable ones for inspiration! So cuuuute!

Boys Cake Smash Outfit Bloomers + Suspenders + Tie

Unisex Baby Romper Bodysuit Assorted Colors

Baby Girl’s Cake Smash Outfit Tutu

Consider Any Allergies

I made sure to give the little guy a bit of cake before the actual cake smash.

He’s got eczema and I never know what might set it off so we’re always cautious about introducing new food.

The last thing I need is for him to gobble half a cake and then find out his little body doesn’t take too kindly to it.

I would suggest doing the same to be on the safe side.

Nudge Them in the Right Direction

Some babies know exactly what to do and others need a little encouragement. My little guy didn’t jump right in like I expected him to.

Maybe it was just too much pressure, we will never know.

He just sat there staring while I excitedly yelled “go on baby, yummy cake!”

That that didn’t work.

So then, I put a little frosting on his lip and his eyes lit up.

After that there was no going back, he jumped right in until he was covered head to toe in cake and frosting (and then so was I).

I was so glad the floor had the plastic sheet!

Cake Smash Clean up Tips

Keep in mind, a cake smash is meant to be a messy, fun, sensory experience for your baby. With kids comes mess, that’s inevitable.

However, being prepared makes the clean up easier so anticipate the things you’ll need ahead of time and keep them on hand.

As I already mentioned, if you’re doing your cake smash on the floor, make sure to grab a plastic table cloth that you can simple toss when you’re done.
At least the floor is taken care of (mostly) . You might want to grab a few if you’re worried.

Have some paper towels on hand and maybe some baby wipes too. Don’t forget to keep your garabage bag, a broom and dust pan nearby too.

Have a little plastic bag handy as well to throw the cake covered clothes in.

We actually had all his bath stuff set up as well so we could go straight to bath time once the cake smash was over.

DIY Cake Smash Photos At Home

I hope you feel inspired to plan and throw your own DIY cake smash right at home! It doesn’t have to be hard or complicated. It just takes a little bit of planning and organization.

Cake smash photography can get expensive but it’s such a nice keepsake so if you want to go the DIY route, I say give it a try!

Remember, it’s more about the experience than just pretty photos. It’s a special way to celebratee one of baby’s first huge milestones (and yours too, you all survived YEAR ONE!).

Make this an oppotunity to create more cherised memories and take some lovely photos you’ll look back on and love.

Got any more tips or your own cake smash story? I would love to hear them.

Leave me a comment.

Easy cake decorating ideas: 3 easy cake decorating ideas - with berries on top, chocolate cake decorating and more

Easy homemade cake decorating - culinary delights with ganache cream, powdered sugar and decorating with berries on top

We have already published a recipe for an easy-to-make low-calorie brownie. Today's material about decor is a simple decoration of cakes at home. We offer three options of varying degrees of difficulty. Check out how to quickly and simply and beautifully decorate a cake in just 10 minutes.

    Simona Cherubini

    Idea #1
    With powdered sugar and cocoa
Do you like looking at pastry shop windows, but have you ever had to decorate a cake yourself? Have you thought about doing the art of decorating cakes at home, but are you afraid to make a mistake? This simple and easy decor is your case, as you can decorate the cake with your own hands without much expense and experience. nine0003

    Simona Cherubini

Step 2. Lay a napkin with openwork edges on top of the powdered sugar layer. Choose for yourself how to arrange it - in the center or with a shift. Then sprinkle everything with cocoa powder, paying special attention to the edges. Remove the napkin and that's it: a simple cake decoration is ready!

    Idea #2
Cake with berries on top , icing and sugar figurines
Another medium complexity recipe for decorating a chocolate cake. Look for small sugar cake decorations for sale - any decor options that use cake decorations at home. Beads, berries are suitable, as an option - you can use gelatin bears. nine0003

    Simona Cherubini

Step 2. Spread the mixture on the cake. Allow it to flow around the edges - this will create the effect of an ice pattern. Simple, beautiful and Christmassy!

Step 3. Arrange a few raspberries on top.

Step 4. Add silver sugar beads.

Step 5. Add other sweet figurines to decorate the cake. I used sweet Christmas trees, gift stockings and gingerbread men. nine0003

Let the icing dry for at least half an hour before serving. Therefore, this way to decorate a chocolate cake is only suitable for those who prepare dessert in advance.

    Idea #3
Cake with Berries on Top and Chocolate Ganache Cream
This is a classic way to decorate a cake that I recommend learning to do—a relatively quick recipe.

    Simona Cherubini

    Ingredients and Tools

    • 200 ml of fresh cream
    • 200 grams of dark chocolate
    • Berries of different colors (raspberries, black and red currants, blueberries, blueberries)

    Simona Cherubini

grated cake chocolate, pour the chips into a capacious container - best of all glass or metal.

    Simona Cherubini

Step 2. Heat the cream without boiling, pour it into the bowl with the grated chocolate and stir immediately. You should get a thick homogeneous mixture to decorate the cake. nine0003

    Simona Cherubini

Step 3. Pour the chocolate mixture over the cake and spread over the surface and edges.

    Simona Cherubini

Step 4. Randomly arrange the berries, starting with the largest raspberry, alternating it with blueberries and other berries, to get a polychrome effect of decorating the cake

Such a colorful cake with berries on top (decor in the photo) it looks so much more spectacular than monochromatic decoration options - only from raspberries or blueberries, for example. nine0003

    Simona Cherubini

Step 5. The main secret of how to decorate a chocolate cake is to put it on a festive dish right away. And don't let it stay warm for too long. Otherwise, the chocolate cream will begin to float around the edges and form a puddle on the dish.
