How to get my photography out there

11 Tips for Getting Your Photography Noticed

Learning how to create great photographs requires a lot of time, skill, and talent. While some photographers are content to make work they love, others want to share their images far and wide. The key to getting your photography noticed starts with these 11 tips.

Consistency is key to getting your photography noticed! Photographer Chuck Anerino’s wedding photography approach is fundamentally photojournalistic, a look he consistently stays on brand with. © Chuck Anerino/Anerino Originals

1. Consistency is Key
One of the best ways of getting your photography noticed is to have a consistent, recognizable style. It doesn’t matter if you make highly styled light and airy portraits or black-and-white documentary shots. Producing high-quality images that are instantly recognizable as yours is a great way to stand out and get noticed.

2. Display Your Work
Getting your images off your hard-drive and onto walls is a great way to get your work noticed. Ask local cafes and shops if they are willing to display your work, even for a short time. Think about ways you can make this beneficial for the venue, such as hosting a reception in the café, shooting subjects wearing their clothes or otherwise promoting your show to bring in new customers. Or shoot for the stars and approach an art gallery about hosting a show there or being part of a group show.

3. Be Savvy with Social
Find your audience where they are and post frequently on social media. Be thoughtful about the hashtags you use. Tag the specific location where your image was taken and the same of the city. Use a hashtag to highlight any products in your photo, including clothing brands or car models. Be sure to highlight the style of your images whether it’s #nycnewbornphotographer or #fineart. If you are not sure where to start, check out hashtags others in your niche are using.

4. Consider Competitions
Search for local and national photography contests and enter as many as you can! Often you can enter images you already created. If you win, you will receive recognition for your work and the competition organizers will likely promote your work for you. This can help you reach people who otherwise never would have seen your work and gives you credibility as an artist.

5. Community Consideration
Be active in your community and take your camera with you! Share photographs of everything from your local farmer’s market to Halloween costumes. Your community will probably the photographs and share them with their friends which opens up an entirely new audience for your work.

6. Barter Better
Just like photographers, other small business and artisans struggle to get their work noticed. Consider partnering with a local restaurant or boutique to trade photographs for goods or services. Many small businesses can’t afford a professional photography but are happy to barter gift certificates, meals, massages and more! Once your photos go up on the businesses websites or walls you can reach thousands of people who would not otherwise have seen your work.

7. Perfect a Portfolio
Having a portfolio of your best work that is easy to find can be a great way to get noticed. You will be ready to share your images easily whenever you see someone looking for a photographer in your niche. Post your portfolio on your website and share your images on popular photo sharing sites like Flickr, Unsplash and 500px. Be sure to use metadata so that your images can be found more easily.

8. Get Published
Getting published can not only get your work noticed, but it can also give you credentials that can lead to new opportunities.  It’s not as hard as you think! Start with local publications and pitch photo essays in your niche. That could be portraits of people active in your community or a photo spread of popular areas to visit. You can also offer photos of local events. Requesting press passes to events is often an easy process that can help you get unique shots.

9. Volunteer
Non-profits and charitable organizations always need volunteers to help them carry out their mission. That includes photographers to help them tell their story or decorate their walls. The possibilities are nearly endless! Offer to photograph events, create portraits of clients or Board members, donate images for their walls or create content for their website.

10. Collaborate with Creatives
There are opportunities to collaborate everywhere! Create a collaboration on Instagram with other photographers where you share each other’s work or agree to tag one another.   Work with local models, florists, or make-up artists to create a referral network.

11. Teach Camera Classes
Everyone walks around with a camera in their pocket but very few people know how to use them. Consider teaching photography classes ranging from getting better cell phone photos to how to use a DSLR. These classes will be particularly popular after the holidays when a lot of people get new devices. This is not only an additional source of income, but will help you establish yourself as an expert and reach a lot of new people.

Get Your Photography Noticed: Make Sure It’s Ready to Share

A lot of people rush getting their work out there even when they’re not ready yet. Remember that you need to have good images if you want to get noticed. Otherwise, viewers will just ignore them.

Of course, it doesn’t mean you have to create National Geographic quality photos all the time. The truth is that even simple images can get a lot of recognition.

What’s crucial is how you present your subject in the picture. Is the composition precise? Does the light illuminate your shot the way you want it? Does the photograph have a lot of visual interest?

If so, then don’t hesitate to share your work with the public.

Experiment with Photo Projects to Get Noticed

If you think outside of the box with your work, you increase your chances of getting noticed.

Try doing photo projects and share them on websites such as PetaPixel, Gizmondo, SLRLounge, and of course, Expert Photography. You can discuss any topics from doing a hidden camera mirror photo, or even making a DIY softbox.

Apart from showing people exciting photos, you also get to show them your skills as a photographer. Teach people how to take pictures in the most creative ways and make them see you as an expert in the field.

Remember that when you share your work online, your name will also be in the byline of the articles. That means people can learn more about your work. It’s a great way to add followers to your social media and even gain new clients!

Run a Photography Blog to Build Your Online Presence

Do you want to get noticed more online? Then you should do some photography promotion via your photography blog.

With so many blogs out there, why should you consider making one? The main reason is that the more articles you publish, the more likely people will find you online.

If you discuss interesting blog topics, your articles will show up a lot on Google and other search websites. In turn, more people will end up discovering your website and your work.

It doesn’t need to be an all-encompassing photography blog that takes up all your time. It’s enough to share a few simple tutorials or even behind-the-scenes snapshots. As long as you think people can benefit from what you have to say, then it’s worth sharing.

It may be hard to believe, but Expert Photography started as a simple blog a few years ago. By adding quality articles online, we began to gain traction and are now one of the most successful photography websites.

Do you want to learn how to promote photography business via blogging? Let us show you how to do it here.

Enter Photography Contests to Gain Recognition

Joining a photo contest is one of the surefire ways to get noticed. You can see a whole range of competitions here, and receive an update every time a new one starts.

There are so many contests out there that it’s challenging to choose which ones to consider. To help narrow down your options, always go for the ones that fit your speciality. So don’t enter a wildlife photography contest if your expertise lies in portraiture.

Make sure to read the terms and conditions before entering. Some competitions may state that they have the right to use your photo, where and whenever they choose, without any kind of reimbursement.

If you find these terms unacceptable, then don’t enter the contest. There are always others out there that offer better deals for you as a contestant.

Remember that even if you have the best photos, it doesn’t mean that you’ll win every time. So just be patient. If your work is noteworthy, the judges will notice it. You’ll get the recognition you deserve even if it takes some time.

It is worth a shot submitting your images through contest hosting sites like Picter, LensCulture and Life Framer!

Get Your Photos Published to Attract Clients

Do you ever wonder how to get your photos published? There are so many ways to do it.

The first option is to submit your work online to websites. There are plenty of choices out there that cater to your type of photography.

If you’re into artistic pictures, then you should try My Modern Met or Juxtapoz. If you’re into adventure sports, then Outside Magazine is a great choice.

Take a look at these twelve magazines that are looking for your work right now.

Now, how about if you want to start a career where you live? Then consider looking at local newspapers and magazines.

You can take photos to local papers and start to earn money (always charge them, they have a budget for this sort of thing), and get published.

Pick up the phone and call your local paper today. In my experience, a phone call is a lot harder to ignore than an email.

You’d also be pleasantly surprised how easy it is to get a press pass for local events. I did it so many times, and people didn’t even ask for my portfolio!

Join Photography Forums to Showcase Your Work

If you’re just getting started, then forums are a great place to showcase your photography. I remember reading what Eric Kim said about starting in street photography.

He posted some of his photos in a street photography forum, and that got him a lot of attention.

The images need to be relevant, as does your text. Otherwise, people will view them as self-promotion, and the site will take them down.

Check out our Facebook page if you would like to share some of your photos.

Sign Up to Social Networks to Reach a Wide Audience

Do you want to know how to advertise photography effectively? Then you need to join Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You’ll find your most significant audience and gain potential clients through these platforms.

Social media gives you an audience of over 4 billion active users. Sure, some users will have all three types of social media pages, but there are three chances they will see it and not miss your photography.

Facebook has 2.19 Billion active Facebook pages. Instagram has 1 billion users; Twitter has 328 Million, and LinkedIn has 500 Million. Just try to imagine how much exposure you can get once you sign up.

Upload Your Work to Photo Sharing Networks

If you like sharing your photos and receiving feedback, photo sharing is for you. Networking with other photographers and having a potential of thousands of readers are the advantages here.

Websites like Flickr and 500px are great for getting yourself noticed as a photographer. However, these sites require high-quality images.

If you only have photos of flowers in your back garden, they’re not going to send any real recognition your way. Your images will not get a second look.

Apart from 500px and Flickr, there are many other photo-sharing platforms available online. I find Behance to show a professional page to showcase your work.

If getting a job isn’t your primary goal, then focus your energy on Instagram. Since it has millions of followers, you have better chances of gaining exposure there. If you have plenty of compelling images, you might just end up with a few new clients along the way!

Dabble in Reddit Forums for Extra Exposure

Reddit is a fantastic example of how a regular person can gain a tremendous amount of exposure with just a single photo.

One of our Top 20 Young Photographers in 2012, Mark Jaworski,  posted the photo below to Reddit‘s pics section. With over 1500 upvotes, tens of thousands of people would have seen it if not hundreds of thousands.

With a very active comment section, Reddit links to both his website and online portfolio. It proved to be an excellent way for Mark to get his photos noticed.

Run Shows at Photography Galleries

Photography galleries are always looking for content. They may have 12+ shows and exhibitions a year, and not all of them planned. They will also be looking to showcase more work in the months after this period.

Contacting them to ask for a small exhibition saves them work and time. It’s not that hard to have your photos hung in small, local galleries.

I’m not talking about huge exhibitions here – just local galleries, selling local photos.

You may find that your local area has plenty of places willing to display your work. You may have to rent wall space. But if your photos sell, then it will more than pay for itself.

Galleries are an effortless way to earn a little bit more money and get your photos noticed. If you’ll excuse the pun, it’s all about exposure.

Conclusion

You don’t have to stick to one platform if you want to get some exposure. Feel free to try all methods and figure out which one you like the best.

Contributing to about four or five major sites is a good way to gain recognition.

What’s crucial is that the quality of your work stays consistent.

Publications in magazines, victories in competitions and participation in exhibitions are three pillars on which a photographer's self-esteem rests. Globally, all this is our path to world fame, and here and now is the opportunity to inform clients and specialists from related shops (stylists, makeup artists, designers) that they are happy to work with you all over the world, which means they should catch their luck by the tail and Working with you. Here I will tell you what to do to get your photos printed in magazines. nine0003

Why a photographer needs to publish in a magazine

It's not about making money. But you don't have to pay anyone if you don't want to. By submitting your work to the magazine, you are participating in an equal exchange - you give the publication content, and it will give you a piece of world fame. Another thing is if you enter into a customer-executor relationship, but I will not consider this possibility in the article. nine0003

There are magazines in the world on any topic, and whatever you shoot about, these photos can be in print. Magazines are:

  • world-class - Esquire, Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Cosmopolitan - I have no experience of working with them yet;
  • local - these are magazines of your city, on their websites you can find contacts and send an email with your portfolio and a short letter about yourself and your willingness to cooperate;
  • online magazines - don't be alarmed, they are still printed publications, you just won't find them in the kiosk at the station. It is the easiest way to get into them, there are many of them, of different scale and status. Some of them are suitable only to overcome their fears, publication in others can be a serious reason for pride. nine0029

What you need to prepare a fashion shoot

If the plot of your shooting is not too fashionable, but you want to appear in a magazine, look for thematic publications. Photo: Olga Yonsh / Face magazine: "THE ENTERTAINMÉNT ISSUE" – June, 2021

Next, we will talk specifically about fashion magazines. This is a huge field for the photographer's self-expression, where you can show just a beautiful picture, or you can raise sensitive topics, entering into a dialogue with the viewer.

But one in this field is not a warrior. You'll need a team—a model, a makeup artist, hair and clothing stylists—people who stand shoulder to shoulder with you and help tell the story. nine0003

To be beautiful in the frame, it is necessary to be beautiful in reality. In order for the story to be taken into the magazine, you need to comply with modern trends in photography, clothing and makeup.

Think about composition and lighting, don't get bogged down in obscure concepts in preparation, and don't be distracted by folds of clothing or a stray strand of hair in the process of shooting - let the professionals look after this, with whom you will share the joy of publication.

How to assemble a team for a non-commercial project is a topic for a separate large article, but your very intention to collect a shoot for publication in a magazine can be the key to the hearts of specialists and the beginning of great co-creation. nine0003

How to shoot photos for a fashion magazine

So, at the start, you may have one of several options:

  • a set of strong single shots for which you are looking for a suitable magazine;
  • the desire to shoot something new and send it to a magazine.
  • Below we will analyze these options in detail.

Photo: Olga Yonsh / LE’COEUR Magazine: ISSUE NOVEMBER 2021 | PRINT

If you want to get into a particular magazine, look at as many of the articles published in it as you can and get inspired by them when creating your series. Often, magazines post a moodboard for the next issue in the public domain - this is a direct guide to what type of series they want to see in your applications.

A particular magazine probably has a website with contacts and emails on it. The ones with the words editorial or submission are suitable for you.

Write your letter in English or in the journal's native language if you are fluent in it. A short greeting, if known - with the name of the editor, a brief introduction of you as a photographer, the name of your series, the names and links to the instagram of team members (models, stylists, makeup artists). And a link to the cloud where you can watch your series and download it in one go. Most likely, you will write to a very busy person who will not download files one at a time or unpack a zip archive at random.

How to get into Vogue - a weekly challenge from fashion magazines

If you are mentally preparing for your first publication in a magazine, you should not expect that your masterpiece will immediately be accepted into Italian Vogue. Although, wait, it is in it that there is a chance to hit.

Every Monday from 8 am to 8 pm, you can upload two of your photos (single, non-series) to photovogue.vogue.com and get their assessment from real live Vogue employees. This does not mean that you will immediately be printed next to Steven Meisel, this is “just” an opportunity to show your photos to the moderators of the site of the world famous magazine. They answered your photos with “yes” or “no”, it’s very easy to understand: if “yes”, they remained on your portfolio page, “no”, they were deleted. There are stories when photographers who collected a portfolio on this site received job offers in foreign projects. nine0003

    Photo: Olga Yosh, October 2021

Similarly, ICONIC magazine allows submissions on Fridays from noon to 3 am.

It is worth noting that these resources can either accept a random photo of a grandmother in the countryside or reject a studio fashion that you have been working on for three weeks. It is unlikely that a frankly weak work will be approved by the editor of a well-known publication, but a strong work can easily be rejected. The reason is simple - the picture does not fit the spirit of this particular magazine. nine0003

    Alternative

There are many great magazines in the world that are much easier to get noticed. They are found on the kavyar.com aggregator site, where any creative specialist can send their immortal masterpiece to a magazine looking for content. The site is in English, but to work with it you will need the ability to use a Google translator.

    There are two options here:

    • use a free account and send up to ten applications per month;
    • upgrade to a paid version, send an unlimited number of applications per month and see automatic sorting by rating (the number of subscribers in social networks) of magazines.

As my practice shows, out of ten thoughtfully sent applications, it is quite possible to get 5-6 approvals, and the number of subscribers of the publications of interest can be checked manually. The free account is quite viable.

How to choose a magazine for publishing photos

This is my first shoot for a magazine, the preparation for it included the item “two weeks to be afraid”. Photo: Olga Yonsh / SHUBA MAGAZINE #27 VOL. 6, 2019

Attention, not all magazines are equally useful. There is no dispute about tastes, but everyone has them. Check out the magazine's Instagram before submitting your work. Take a look at his covers. Are you sure you want your work to be among these pictures? If yes, be bold. If not, there is a chance that, having received the publication, you will bashfully hide it in the table.

While you are looking for a magazine, magazines are looking for content. Most of the magazines on Caviar consist only of photographs, from front to back cover. Among the works sent by photographers, a couple of advertising publications were hidden - this is the magazine's earnings. But no one will leaf through something consisting of one advertisement, which means that the magazine needs you as much as you need it. And not all of them are so popular to meticulously choose. On adjacent pages, there may be a fairy tale, portraits with rhinestones on the nails, and a psychological story with complex accent lighting. Are you sure you want to add your work to this mess? nine0003

Pluses - any genre has a chance to be in print. Cons - let's assume that magazines exist not only to satisfy the egos of authors. The audience is also looking at it. Let the lovers of every genre enjoy the genre. Yes, and yourself - find yourself among like-minded people.

Most magazines will reject you if you don't fit the genre and subject matter. Sometimes the editors don't just say no, they might write you a letter saying, dude, this is a super cool story, but it doesn't fit our publication. But we have friends - another magazine, we sent them your work. Send them an application, and I'm sure you'll be welcome there. It happened to me. nine0003

If you want to go to a specific journal, but you couldn't find it on Cavyar, look for its website, it contains contacts, mail for receiving submissions (applications). Send a photo, series name, team credits (a list of team members), wardrobe credits (names of clothing details and brands that released them). Done, you are amazing!

How magazines select photos for publication

Now let's look at what exactly magazine editors are looking for when choosing photos for the next issue. nine0003

    Exclusivity

It's a fact that there has already been a series in the magazine at least once. Caviar takes care of this automatically and does not allow the same footage to be sent to another magazine that requires exclusivity. When you submit your photos to a magazine, choose the magazine thoughtfully. You can then send the same shots to another, but not any - as a rule, all the cool guys require exclusivity.

The name of this bow within the team is "no pants, but with a hat." Photo: Olga Yonsh / Top Posters Magazine: FASHION / August Issue, 2021

If a magazine declares exclusivity of the publication, it means that you and your team promised not to publish these photos anywhere before the agreed date (on the page with the application there will be a line exclusivity ends with the date).

Nowhere is nowhere at all. If this agreement is not respected, they threaten not to publish you, or even kick you out of the Cavyar platform. The likelihood that someone will go to watch your stories (especially before submitting a series to a magazine), or that a foreign magazine will check what you have on your VK wall, is minimal, but you make such a promise by submitting an application. nine0003

Outside the Caviar platform, exclusivity terms and agreements will have to be checked and observed by yourself.

Experience shows that the pleasure of showing the world a published work with a magazine logo is worth the wait for the vouchers and the end of exclusivity. The wait can take from a couple of weeks to several months, warn the team.

    Quantity and quality of photographs

Magazines take on average a series of 4-8 frames. Sometimes it happens from 2 right up to 28. If the series is accepted, you need to understand that most likely not all frames will be published, but a selection of the best ones, according to the editor. Give him plenty to choose from, but send only the best. nine0003

Most magazines ask for JPG format, sRGB color profile, aspect ratio 8.5x11 for vertical frames (300 dpi, 3300px long side) and 17x11 (300 dpi, 5100px long side) for horizontal. The specific requirements of a given journal, if any, are always indicated in the call for work description.

To shoot in a swamp, the whole team must be ready to feed mosquitoes all day long.Photo: Olga Yonsh / ELEGANT Magazine: ELEGANT (October) 2021

fit the size. But then the layout designer will have to cut your masterpiece to the desired proportions at his discretion, and he should have time for this. Time, it would seem, is nonsense, but you have one series, and the layout designer has a full magazine. Respect the work of others and increase your chances of getting published by doing what you are asked to do. nine0003

Magazines like it when a series has both horizontal and vertical frames. When there are close-ups, medium shots, general shots, and details in a series.

    Diversity

Almost everyone demands that models change their make-up, bows (from look - look, this is what the model is wearing) and - this is important - that different brands appear in the description of clothes. If there is only one brand, it will be taken for an advertisement and rejected, if the bow is one in six frames - we are still talking about fashion here - some (but not all!) Magazines may reject your application for this reason. nine0003

And let the onion parts be from different brands. If you are working with a clothing designer, call an accessory designer as well, or add a couple of non-designer details. You can write something like “mommy’s chest, grandma’s closet, stylist property” in the description of clothing items if you don’t know or for some reason don’t want to mention the brand in the publication.

However, there may be exceptions to these rules. I had a series sent to me by Imirage Magazine about one model, in one look, with the same make-up and in 2:3 frame proportions, because I'm lazy. The application was accepted, and not just accepted, but given a cover! Do what makes your eyes burn, don't get hung up on technical parameters, don't complicate for the sake of complicating, and try, try new things! nine0003

The frame, which eventually became the cover, was suggested by the makeup artist, I did not want to shoot it in advance. Photo: Olga Yonsh / IMIRAGEmagazine – July 2021 – Issue 1029

How much does it cost to publish photos in the magazine

Publication in many publications, including very cool ones, is free. However, there are fully paid editions, guaranteed paid publications (with more photos per upload), pay for publication on the cover, speeding up the publication of your work in a magazine, and other options, each publication has its own. nine0003

And in some cases, you may be refused (by returning the money), read carefully what you agree to. I have no experience in using paid services on Cavyar, so I can’t give specific advice.

    What you should not forget

Filling out the application, you will enter data about the entire team under each frame. Here you need to be careful - do not forget anyone, do not seal anywhere. It is better to ask the team in advance how to write their names in Latin letters correctly and how they want to be signed in the publication. If you make a mistake and want to correct this information later, this is a paid service in all magazines. nine0003

They usually write Last name First name, with a separate line - Instagram account. All the fields that need to be filled in on Caviara are signed, much is automated, it is difficult to make a mistake, but a mistake will cost money or an apology to the team member whose last name you have distorted.

Photographer's copyright when published in a magazine

Models' eyes watch your copyrights. Photo: Olga Yonsh / Brilliant Magazine: JULY 2021

It is important to clarify here that the author of the article is interested in copyright in a minimal amount. In order to send photographs to a magazine, receive loose-leaf sheets and rejoice in the recognition of your work by someone other than your mother, deep knowledge of this issue is not required. If you are afraid of pitfalls, discuss this issue with a specialist before submitting an application. nine0003

The author of the article publishes in magazines, participates in exhibitions and exists on the Internet under a fictitious creative pseudonym that is not legally fixed in any way and is not associated with a passport name. And it does not have any disadvantages for itself.

If you need publications for a unique talent visa or other activities that require a clear link between you and your accomplishments, you may need to go the other way, and a copyright lawyer is definitely needed. nine0003

From the moment a photograph is taken, the author is considered to be the photographer. The copyright holder too. In order to submit photographs to the magazine through Caviar, you will have to check the box in front of the phrase “I am the copyright holder of the works in this submission”. That is, a photographer can send photos to a magazine, but you don’t need to ask a make-up artist, retoucher or stylist about it, although they can also create a portfolio on this site and published publications will be displayed on their pages.

Do I need a model release in order to publish photographs of people in a magazine? Magazines and Caviar do not require it. Submitting photos to a magazine is for non-commercial use. Do you understand why you need it and love papers? Sign up. nine0003

By submitting photos to the magazine, you give the magazine the right to publish photos in its social networks, website and print in circulation. This does not affect your right to be an author in any way, it does not make the journal the exclusive copyright holder.

    Terminals

Now, where we filmed it, there is a wardrobe for jackets. Photo: Olga Yonsh / A G A R ! M O Magazine: FEBRUARY 2021

Now you know a lot more about how to get into magazines than I did at the time of the first approved application. Go ahead. See what other teams are doing, get inspired, act bold! And remember, in extreme cases, strangers will tell you "No." This is not a reason to stop doing what you are doing. One magazine will refuse, another will agree. nine0003

By the way, no one forbade sending your series to several magazines at the same time or sending what was filmed a year, two, three years ago, just remember about exclusivity.

And never give in to the lack of technical means, equipment, money, the best moment. This series adopted in Spanish A G A R ! M O Magazine, filmed in the hallway of the makeup artist's apartment with the light from a telephone flashlight through a glass of water, a lava lamp and cling film.
