The majority of the presets apply subtle adjustments without over-editing the images and to maintain a natural look. All presets are meant as a starting point for further fine-tuning your images.

The focus of the presets is to carefully work out the beautiful details of the Milky Way and emphasizing the stars and galaxies on the night sky. All presets have been tested with 100+ images from different camera models to ensure the most universal use possible. They are also a great addition to my Signature Lightroom presets.

The presets are also ideal for editing images of Northern Lights, as the colors are largely preserved and the contrast is noticeably improved.

Please keep in mind that you still need to adjust the basic settings of each image. In particular, you’ll need to adjust the white balance (→ Adjusting White balance for Astrophotography) and exposure in the Basic panel of Lightroom.

These are not your average one-click presets. These presets are based on my structured workflow for editing astro images and give you the freedom to create and sculpt the final image using a selection of local adjustment tools. Having a structured workflow when editing allows you to develop a repeatable personal style and rids you of any struggles over where to start and what to do next.

How do they work?

  • First start by adjusting the global tonality of the image. These presets adjust the overall contrast in the image as well as things like clarity and shadow detail.

  • Now it's time to get rid of the noise and sharpen. Noise is one of the biggest challenges in astrophotography and removing it goes a long way in creating an aesthetically pleasing image. Also built into these presets are my settings for RAW sharpening, fine-tuned specifically for clean astro images.

  • Next up is a colour grade of the entire image. The colours of the image will help create the mood you are going for and separating these adjustments from the tonality presets gives you freedom to create a winning combo.

  • Finally, add the finishing touches and sculpt the image artistically using my local adjustment presets. Darken the sky, make the Milky Way pop, and add a glow to the brightest stars with just some of the tools provided.

Included with the presets are tutorial videos which go into much better detail to help you get the most out of these presets. It's not just about pressing the button but how you apply the adjustments too.

Local adjustments

Once you have set the global tonality and colour grade of the image it's time to use my local adjustment tools to sculpt the final image. Check out the examples below:

1. Darken Sky

This graduated filter helps darken the sky but doesn't reduce the Milky Way, allowing it to pop and stand out against the darkened backdrop of space.

2. Milky Way Pop

This subtle adjustment helps the Milky Way pop but aims to maintain a natural look. This adjustment needs to be applied using the technique outlined in the instructional videos to help it blend seamlessly. If you're after garish and overcooked Milky Ways then these aren't the presets for you!

3. Starglow

Add a glow to the brightest stars in the image and help them stand out. Works great for highlighting constellations or images that feature a little cloud or mist.

4. Light Pollution Reduce

Cuts down on strong glare from light pollution, one less distracting element in your image.

5. Vignette

Draw the viewer in and frame your subjects using my custom vignette.

6. Foreground Pop

Reveal detail in the foreground and use this custom brush to accentuate any leading lines, drawing the viewer into the image.

7. Star Reduction

Reduce the stars on the edge of the frame and cut down on the chaos. Works best on tracked sky exposures that pick up an increased amount of smaller stars.

Feedback

“Just want to say a big "thank you" for your Lightroom presets. As I started doing milky way pictures at the age of 58 (really late!) just a few months ago, your workflow along with the presets helped me a lot in learning quickly how to develop them perfectly. In between I tweaked some of the presets a little bit, e. g. adding some temperature and tint to the milky-way-pop-up, to adapt them to my personal style.”
Peter Scheitterer

"Just been using the presets - first impressions are great! The darken sky adjustment works brilliantly, I think that'll be my go-to setting."
Craig Harvey

"As a Lightroom preset newbie I was sceptical as I always thought they would not be tailored to specific scenes and settings. I installed the pack with ease following Alyn’s instructions and tried them straight away on shots I’d taken a few weeks prior. I was amazed by the results. I let the presets do the hard work and tweaked the final image only slightly to my liking. It’s a great idea and makes a massive difference to my work stream. I can’t wait for clear dark skies to use them again after. 10 out of 10."
Thomas Winstone

"I’ve never used any Lightroom presets before but Alyn’s presets really do make the editing workflow easy and straightforward, imparting his expertise into the process. An awesome toolkit for Lightroom"
Georgina Harper

"Easy to use set of presets that help create a great workflow to my editing session! Will be now using these on all my Astro photos!"
Sarah Smiler

37 Best Free Lightroom Presets to Transform Your Photos in 2022!

Presets are a great way to edit images in Adobe Lightroom. They are adjustments made to an image and then saved for later use.

Some photographers or software producers create these presets and offer them to the world. Some of them can be very expensive, while others are free.

A quick Google search will bring you thousands of free Lightroom presets. Some of them are great, some are good, and the rest are probably not worth using. nine0003

Here we have collected 37 free Lightroom presets for you, covering most photography topics.

Why Use Lightroom Presets

Lightroom presets are designed to speed up post-processing. They allow you to edit multiple images at the same time, with a single click.

This way your images can have a uniform tone and atmosphere. All you have to do is paste the settings on all your photos.

Perfect for meeting deadlines. For example, event photographers almost always use presets.

Everyone can benefit from using Lightroom presets because they are non-destructive. Everything in Lightroom is non-destructive. This means that you can always return to the raw image with the click of a button. You can easily remove your adjustments.

You can add preset adjustments to an image, but they can all be customized to give you a custom look. It also speeds up the workflow and at the same time teaches you how to achieve different effects. nine0003
