8 Best Sites to Convert Image to Black and White Online - Internet & Social Networking

Although we love to press continuously, black and white photos give a distinct look and effect. However, images converted to grayscale leave us blue If you encounter a similar situation, bookmark this page as it offers various websites that will help you convert the image to black and white instead of grayscale.

For those who don't know, black and white and shades of gray are two different things. Many image editing applications and websites often replace them unknowingly, and the results can be strange.

In this post, you will find 8 free sites where you can convert pictures to black and white. In addition, you will also learn the difference between grayscale and black and white. Let's start with the difference.

Remarks: We have found that black and white and black and white are two different ways of expressing the same thing. Both are acceptable.

How grayscale differs from black and white

As the name suggests, grayscale means that images have different shades of gray. The photo looks like it's made up of three primary colors - black, white, and various shades of grey. When converting a color image to grayscale, different shades of gray replace the actual colors depending on the intensity of each. Thus, dark grays will replace dark ones, and lighter shades of gray will replace light ones.

Black and white images are a special case of grayscale images where the image strictly has only two colors, black and white. There is no gray. Detail is lost in black and white images. Hence, it is generally used for printing text in the main. Grayscale images retain various image details.

Interesting fact: Black and white films or photographs are stored in grayscale.

Now let's check the sites.

1. Pinetools

Pinetools conforms to the definition of black and white images, where colors lighter than the selected threshold are converted to white and the rest are black. Thus, you are offered the opportunity to change the threshold according to your requirements.

The site is easy to use. Launch the website and click the "Choose File" button to upload your image.

Then click the Apply button at the bottom. You can change the threshold value before clicking the Apply button or later.

Upload an image by clicking on any of the provided image types, ie. PNG, JPG and WEBP,

2. IMGonline

IMGonline also allows you to convert images to pure black and white. Apart from other features offered by the site, there is no preview on it. You can neither view the uploaded image nor the final image directly. In the case of the final image, you either need to download it or open it from a link.

However, the way to make your image black and white is quite simple. All you have to do is select the image using the "Choose File" button and then choose the compression options (if you want). Finally, click OK. On the next page, upload your monochromatic image.

Visit IMGonline

3. Photo Editor

Yes, the site is called Photo Editor. This provides both grayscale and black and white effects. The interface reminds you of photo editing software with a toolbar housing various options at the top.

Here's how to convert an image to black and white.

Step 1: To add an image, click File > Open. Then choose your image.

Step 2: Click on filters and select black/white from the list. By default, the filter is applied to the entire area. You can select your area by first clicking on the rectangular or round selection box above the filters. Then draw the image. Click Apply to add the filter to the image.

Step 3: To save the image, click File > Save As.

Visit Photo Editor

4. Img2go

Img2go also offers a black and white mode as a filter. Once you open the website, click "Choose File" to add your photo.

When the image is uploaded, you will be taken to the appropriate photo editor. Click on the filter.

Select Black & White to add a filter. Click Apply to reflect the change.

Gray Area

These were some of the cool websites that have the ability to do pure black and white images. As mentioned earlier, black and white images have less detail compared to grayscale images. If you just want to remove colors from an image, you should use grayscale images. But if you want a pure black and white image, we have done our best to offer you the amazing ones of all.

Next All photo editors offer normal cropping. How about cropping into shapes? Check out these websites that offer a shape cropping feature.

Four steps to black and white photography

The first thing I want to say is that there is no universal recipe for creating a black and white image. Each shot requires an individual approach. That is why it is so difficult to create a lesson. There are many ways to make a black-and-white image from a color image, and each of them will have fans. I will tell you about the method that I use myself.

I once read that a photo should be in black and white, unless the frame would clearly benefit from the use of color. You can agree with this statement or not, but I check every photo I take to see if it will look better in color or in black and white. In addition, without being distracted by color, you can better appreciate the composition of the shot, even if you end up choosing a color option.

The black-and-white photograph clearly shows shapes and lines, with great emphasis on rhythm, chiaroscuro and structure. The range of a successful black and white photograph is from black to pure white, including the full range of midtones in between. Gray-gray photographs are very rarely expressive. Since we completely exclude the influence of color on the expressiveness of a photograph, tonality and contrast become the main visual means.
The tonality of an image in a photograph is determined by the ratio of black, white and gray fields in it. Low Key (dark tone) photography is characterized by the fact that most of the image is made up of dark, sometimes completely black elements, but most of the details are clearly distinguishable, and the light areas are always bright and clean. Intermediate tones are weakly expressed, dark areas of the tonal scale. High Key photography is characterized by the fact that most of the image is made up of light gray and pure white tones. A necessary condition is the presence of at least minor completely black elements that give the image the necessary tonal accent. The photo can be of medium tone, without pronounced dark or light areas, but with the obligatory presence of both black and white.

Contrast in a black and white photograph characterizes the degree of visual difference between its lightest (brightest) and darkest areas. The greater this difference, the more contrast the photo will be.
Actually, the processing when creating a black-and-white photo is reduced to setting the tonality and contrast.

Step 1. Photographing

Which photo should I choose to process in black and white? Almost any. It seems to me that only one thing is definitely not suitable for black and white - this is a plot with close tones and a lot of details, from this it ripples in the eyes. But there are scenes that seem to be made for black and white:
- high contrast, with little detail;
- containing a large number of colors that do not agree with each other;
- graphic, the main thing in which is drawing, lines, light and shadow;
- boring in color, almost monochrome (for example, winter landscapes on a cloudy day).

Shoot in black and white or in color? "If you want to get a good b/w photo, never shoot in b/w mode. The algorithm for converting a color image to monochrome, wired into your camera, is most likely a simple discoloration. The most clumsy, inflexible and destructive way that will deprive you can see a huge amount of information in the frame. Shoot in color, and translate in b / w in a graphic editor "- here is a tip from Mark Podrabinek, a famous photographer, TV presenter and founder of the Personnel Department photo school (his other great tips for black and white photography can be read here >>>). I totally agree and I always photograph in color, even if I'm already sure that I want to end up with a black and white photo.

For an example of processing, I chose this photo:

There are quite a lot of colors in it, which are not related to each other in any way, do not rhyme and do not create any special mood. Feel free to get rid of them - in my opinion, the plot will only benefit from this.

Step 2. Set the tone

A bit of theory. The human eye perceives two things - light intensity and color. In a black and white photograph, the color loses its main characteristic - the color tone and turns from blue, green, red into various shades of gray.

This is how a photo editor "sees" a color with a simple discoloration, or a camera when shooting in black and white mode

For the eye, the lightest color is yellow, and blue-violet is estimated as very dark. With simple bleaching, "light" colors turn out to be darker than they really seem to us. And the picture loses its volume. The task of competent processing, therefore, is to reproduce the colors in the image in terms of lightness the same as we see them in life. In film photography, filters are used for this. The light filter acts selectively: it completely transmits some rays, partially delays others, weakening their effect, and completely absorbs others. Therefore, by applying light filters when shooting, we have the opportunity to change the lightness of achromatic tones in the picture, which in black and white photography convey the colors of the real world, and thus bring the image closer to the visual impression produced by the subject. In digital photography, the effect of filters can be simulated by means of processing.

Let's apply a Black and White adjustment layer to the color wheel in Photoshop and see how different color filters affect the color.

Blue filter

Red filter

Yellow filter

Green filter

As can be seen from the above examples, the green filter conveys the tone closest to what we see in reality. That's what I use when editing photos most often. But not always. Sometimes, in order to fine-tune the image, you have to manually adjust the lightness of a particular color, taking into account the characteristic features of each of the filters.

So let's get started.
1. Open the selected photo in Photoshop. Crop if necessary, resize.
2. Create a "Black&White" adjustment layer by clicking the button on the Adjustments panel

or via the menu: Layer-New Adjustment Layer-Black&White

This is what we get as a result:

, not volumetric and not contrasting, however, we have also preserved the original image - and further we will work, in fact, with a color picture, and see the changes in a black and white image.

3. Switch to the tab Properties (Properties) and select the preset Green Filter (Green filter):

See how the tones are redistributed after applying the filter:

In the photo, the changes are still faintly visible. We have only set the direction for the changes so far - with further processing, yellow tones will be rendered lighter, blue tones darker.

Step 3. Adjusting the contrast

The second processing task when converting an image to black and white is adjusting its contrast.

You can use an adjustment layer "Brightness, Contrast", but finer adjustment is obtained using Curves (Curves). The Curves adjustment adjusts points across the entire tonal range of an image. Initially, image tonality is represented as a straight diagonal line on the graph.

When correcting an image in RGB mode, the top right corner of the graph represents highlights and the bottom left corner represents shadows.
The horizontal axis of the graph represents the input values (original image values) and the vertical axis represents the output values (new adjusted values).

As guide points are added and moved along the line, the shape of the curve changes to reflect image adjustments. The steeper parts of the curve represent areas of high contrast, and the flat parts of the curve represent areas of low contrast. Moving the point at the top of the curve allows you to adjust the highlights; by moving the point in the center of the curve, you correct the midtones; and by moving the point at the bottom of the curve, you adjust the shadows. You can read more about using curves here>>>

Let's continue setting up our photo.
4. Add an adjustment layer Curves

or through the menu: Layer-New Adjustment Layer-Curves

5. We will modify the curve by adding and moving guide points so as to maximize the volume of the image. For this photo, it was necessary to increase the brightness of the highlights and midtones (note that the point of intersection of our curve with the diagonal is shifted from the center to the darker side). The most "steep" area of the curve is also shifted to the left, to the area of darker tones. At the same time, we will leave the white and black points in their places.

Other photographs may require a different curve shape!

Note that the curve affects the color image. If we turn off the black and white layer now, we can see how much richer the colors of the original photo become after changing the curve.

At this stage, it makes sense to return to the black and white layer settings again (don't forget to turn on its visibility in order to evaluate the result!). Now you don’t need to radically change anything, but you may want to additionally lighten or darken some colors, because the saturation of the color image has changed. Gently and little by little move the sliders for each of the colors. You can undo the action if you do not like the result, you can use the Edit-Undo menu.

Finally, you can merge all layers: Layer-Merge Visible.
The main work is finished! You can stop there. And you can go a little further and add our mood photo.

Step 4: Decorate

What else can you do?
Toning, adding noise, vignette, applying ready-made filters - I call it "bows", it seems to be good without them, but still they decorate. The main thing here is not to overdo it.

6. Add toning.
Toning can be added in a variety of ways. I use Curves (yes, it's the most versatile tool in Photoshop and the most flexible).

Create a new Curves adjustment layer: Layer-New Adjustment Layer-Curves. When we adjusted the image contrast, we changed the overall RGB curve, which affects all colors at once. For toning, select one of the three channels - Red (red), Green (green) or Blue (blue). Try shifting the guide points above or below the diagonal to get different shades. Try changing not one, but two or even all three channels - experiment!

Here the curve for the blue channel is plotted to give a yellow tint to the light tones of the image and a blue tint to the dark tones.
