#NudeThursday: what lies behind the unusual phenomenon of Russian-language Twitter with the publication of nude photos

While some social networks ban nudity, a whole tradition has developed around it on Twitter. How "Nude Thursdays" went from a meme to a way of accepting oneself and a political statement.

June 25th is Thursday, which means #NudeThursday is starting on Twitter. Every week hundreds of users use this hashtag to share their nude (or semi-nude) pictures. If the phenomenon was born six months ago in the form of a comic flash mob, then by June 2020 it had become a noticeable phenomenon on Russian-language Twitter. nine0003

Participants of "Nude Thursdays" pursue different goals - from a way of self-expression and acceptance of one's body to political actions. And in opposition to the flash mob are people who criticize the authors of the pictures for "promoting fornication." TJ figured out what is hidden behind one of the most unusual Runet traditions, which could only be formed on Twitter.

By the time Nude Thursdays appeared in pop culture, there had long been designations for “naked” days of the week, but then they were not about pictures in social networks, but about the ability to walk without clothes in the real world. For example, in Friends, Joey invites Rachel to live with him and says, "Well, you know about Naked Thursdays, right?" The very concept of Nudes as naked photos on the web was formed back in the 1990s on the first Internet forums. And in 2005, the description first appeared on the Urban Dictionary: “Nudes are naked photos of girls that they post on forums. If a hot girl posts a regular photo, she might be asked for nudes.”

By June 2020, there are already almost 50 different interpretations of the word Nudes on the site, but they all convey about the same thing - this is a picture of a naked person sent publicly or personally on the Internet. nine0003

Gradually, the phrase "Send Nudes" formed into a separate meme. According to Know Your Meme, it has been used in a "meme" context since 2008, when Flickr posted a picture of a kitten with a revolver to its head, and the inscription: "Send nudes or I'll shoot the fucking kitten. " The picture was ironic over people who are ready for anything for the sake of nude photos.

The phrase became a mass meme around the beginning of the "tenths", and since then there have been thousands of jokes on this topic. The improvement of cameras in smartphones, and the development of some social networks (Twitter, Facebook) with the emergence of others (Snapchat, Tinder, Instagram) also influenced. There was also a dark side to this: with the increase in the number of nudes, the concept of “Revenge Porn” appeared, when, after breaking up, one of the partners publishes naked photos of the other in public access. nine0003

Nevertheless, by 2020 "Send Nudes" has taken place both as a phrase and as an independent meme. And reputable publications like GQ release detailed guides on how to do nudes and publish them online (or send them in private messages).

From time to time, in the English-language part of social networks, they try to arrange a “National send nudes day”, ironically explaining that on this holiday everyone can ask for nudes - and receive them in private messages. The first such attempt was made on Twitter in 2012, and the most successful was in 2016, when users left hundreds of tweets under the hashtag #NationalSendANudeDay . nine0003

The problem was that there were about a dozen "National Nude Days" on the Internet separately from each other: they were held on April 18, May 19, June 25, October 5, March 22 - perhaps in order to have more reasons to receive nude photos. But if in the West it was not possible to create a certain tradition, then in 2020 it was possible to implement it in Russia.

For the first time, the hashtag #Nudsochetverg on Twitter was used by a Moscow-based blogger named Alexei (nickname @Deadinternet). At the end of January, he made the first post on this topic, but then it was not about public pictures, but about the traditional Send Nudes to private messages. “I came up with it just for fun, so that in dm (Direct Message - personal messages - approx. TJ) girls threw nudes. And only then the people picked it up, ”Alexey recalled in a conversation with TJ.

According to Aleksey, he continued to promote "Nudsochetverg", but at first nudes were sent only to him and a few friends who support the hashtag. After a couple of months, public posts with a hashtag and nude pictures began to appear on Twitter. And the tradition reached its peak of popularity, according to the author, by April-May.

There is one possible explanation for this. In the spring of 2020, part of the world was quarantined and isolated due to the coronavirus pandemic. Against this background, the Khoros agency recorded a sharp jump in the popularity of the words "nudes" and "dickpick" - on Twitter they were used 384% more often than usual. Also, people began to use eggplant and peach emoji more often - they often denote the genitals. Dr. Helen Fisher of the Kinsey Institute believes that in the era of social distancing, some accumulate stress and unfulfilled sexual energy, which then turn into made nudes. nine0003

One way or another, by June "Nude Thursdays" had become a prominent phenomenon on Russian-language Twitter. Hundreds of men and women participate in the tradition each week. Not only nude pictures appear, but also photos in underwear - this also counts. The hashtag is regularly trending on social networks and is becoming more and more popular.

Over time, "Nyudsochetverg" got opponents, including subscribers of the public "Bottle" - supporters of Vladislav Pozdnyakov and "Men's State". At the end of May, a critical post appeared that “Russian women just want to undress”, which gathered hundreds of comments. nine0003

Then the hashtag "Nudes Thursday" began to be subject to spam attacks: Twitter users deliberately post content under it on other topics in order to "hide" nude photos. Often, the theme of imperial Russia and the hashtag #Russiabezbl ***va are used for this. The main claims: the participants of the "Nudsochetverg", like the rest of Russia, have lost their faith, identity and basic values, and with their naked bodies they "promote fornication." The opposing hashtag is found on VKontakte in publics like Alt-Right. nine0003

The real reason for participating in Nude Thursdays is, of course, not promoting fornication. The user under the nickname Dnischebrodsky regularly supports the Twitter tradition with her pictures, and for her this is, first of all, a way to accept herself and fall in love with “her physical shell”.

“I have always doubted my attractiveness. It seemed that here and here it needed to be corrected, and this is generally better to hide with loose clothing. In fact, it turned out that most of those around you do not even notice your far-fetched shortcomings and look at the whole person, while not forgetting to support and express admiration for your body, ”she notes in a conversation with TJ. nine0003

With each such comment, you begin to believe them a little and look at yourself from a different angle, you become more confident and calmer.

Paradox: the confidence in one's own attractiveness gained through the assessment of others helps to learn not to notice the toxic assessments of anonymous people on the network, which previously could have hurt a lot. The network helped fight the network.

“Girls publish everyday ordinary pictures of their bodies without processing and without retouching to show what the female body is like. On June 11, Serenko used the hashtag in an atypical way: she added to the weekly tradition support for Yulia Tsvetkova, who was accused of distributing pornography for drawings of vulvas posted on VKontakte. On that day, dozens of people used #NudsoThursday in conjunction with the hashtag #zaYulya.

In a conversation with TJ, Daria explains: “It seemed to me that the very idea of putting the body out in public space could be politicized, in this case for the benefit of Yulia. Both Nudsochetvergi and the Tsvetkova case are about the state's attempt to control the representation of our physicality and sexuality. Putting pornography where there is no pornography. To put perversion where there is no perversion. Take away our right to speak for ourselves.” nine0003

All TJ's interlocutors noted the influence of "guardians of women's morality" who publicly oppose "Nude Thursdays" and come in comments to the authors of thematic posts. This was one of the reasons why a Twitter user named “Sir. Artorias": "That Thursday was special - there was something like a male flash mob in support of the girls who were undeservedly poured with shit in the Bottle" public.

Quite expectedly, I found myself in the very public “Bottle”, where they left me with not very inventive and frankly boring verbal diarrhea. Although about “Sir. Pidortorias" - I liked it. Chechen blogger Khasan Khalitov is being blackmailed with a photo of his naked sister
