Places to shoot in los angeles

The 19 Best Places to Photograph in Los Angeles (Travel Guide)

LA has to be one of the most photogenic cities in the US. From the sprawling mountains minutes away from the city to scenic beaches Los Angeles is FULL of great places to Instagram.

Nearly every sunset in LA is breathtaking which is why I love this city so much. Every time I visit Los Angeles I find myself photographing all day and night. If you visiting LA for the first time I highly recommend renting a car to get around. Much of the city is sprawled out so it’s best to have a car to get around the city.

Here is my list of the 19 best places to take pictures in Los Angeles:

LA from Griffith Observatory

If you only stop at one place on this list the Griffith Observatory is a must, it has to be one of the most instagrammable places in LA. Once you get to Griffith Observatory you’ll be greeted with a panoramic view of LA. If you’re looking for a Los Angeles skyline photo location put the observatory on your list!

Parking can be tight at peak times though and you may have to park a bit down the hill if the parking lot is full.

Additionally if you’re willing to hike a bit there are a few trails behind Griffith that will let you get above the observatory for even more creative views. The photo above is from the hiking path that starts at the observatory.

2. LACMA “Urban Light”

Long Exposure at LACMA’s Urban Light

Day or Night the “Urban Light” exhibit at Lacma is a popular destination. Basically any instagrammer can appreciate the unique rows of street lights here. The grounds of LACMA also have some interesting environments to explore but the most prominent feature is Urban Light.

Korean Bell Of Friendship in Angels Gate Park

This spot took me a long time to find so I knew I had to include it on the list.

Angels Gate Park has Korean Friendship Bell which is a massive bell in a stone pavilion. Additionally there is a very unique arched basketball hoop at this park. Plus it’s on a large hill so you can get views of the water from the park.

Sunset At Santa Monica Pier

If you’re visiting LA enjoying a sunset at the Santa Monica Pier is a must. The waves crashing down as the sun goes down behind the pier is just one of those classic California things that can’t be missed. If you want to spend more time here I recommend exploring the pier, you can even walk underneath the pier.

Slauson station pedestrian bridge by @__dos

The pedestrian bridge at Slauson Station is huge for portraits. The bridge at night is lit by a single light source on the top that gives your photos a very moody feel. I personally haven’t been here but have been told by friends that they recommend bringing a couple of people since the area is kind of sketchy.

Walt Disney Concert Hall at Night

Located directly downtown The Walt Disney Concert Hall is full of incredible shapes and architecture. If you’re downtown for dinner I recommend stopping at Broken Spanish for sophisticated Mexican dishes (The pork belly tacos are incredible).

Just a warning: The stainless steel exterior can get incredibly hot on a sunny day so be careful where you put your hands.

7. The Broad

Long Exposure of the Broad at Night

The Broad museum is right next to the Walt Disney Concert Hall in the middle of downtown LA. Its unique exterior is fun to photography day or night. There are also some interesting art pieces inside, general admission tickets are free but there is typically a line for them.

Fence At The Queen Mary

The Queen Mary is quite the tourist attraction with shops and restaurants inside but the front of the ship is incredible. Parking was free for 30 minutes while I was there which was just enough time to hop out and take a photos and get back on the road.

Inside of the Bradbury Building there is a vintage stairway that is hit with unique lighting from the skylight on the roof.

10. Underpass in Downtown LA

Underpass in Downtown Los Angeles

It took a bit to find this spot but it’s centrally located in Downtown LA. There are a few places to drive into the underpass, plus if you come late there is parking all over the street where you’d want to shoot. It’s underneath S Grand Ave so you can enter via W 4th St.

If you take portraits the last bookstore is a perfect stop with its uniquely stacked books. Many will recognize the books stacked in a circle pattern.

12.

808 S Olive Street Parking Garage

Joe’s parking garage at 808 S Olive St is located in the heart of downtown LA. There isn’t much to see at this garage but when you’re driving down to exit the garage has a stunning circular ramp that is painted orange. When I visited the garage was $3 for 15 minutes and that was about all the time I spent here. I couldn’t figure out a way to enter the bottom of the ramp area but when you’re driving down you can pull over and hold your camera out the window (which I did to take the photo above).

Venice Beach Canals at Sunset By Roberto Nickson @rpnickson

The Venice Canal Historic District are great to capture during the day or at sunset. The man made canals were built in 1905 by developer Abbot Kinney who wanted to recreate the feel of Venice, Italy. You’ll find tons of pedestrian walkways and bridges here that go between incredible homes and gardens. The canals themselves offer great reflections of the palm trees poking up all over the neighborhood.

Downtown LA from the W 4th Street Bridge

If you’re looking for somewhere to take pictures in Los Angeles at night you have to stop at the W 4th street bridge. If you’re driving it’s usually pretty easy to find a parking spot a few blocks away on S Boylston St or Miramar St.

After getting the skyline from the W 4th St bridge take a walk down S Beaudry Ave to the 5th and 6th street bridge for tons of other angles. If you have a wide angle lens and a tripod you’ll be in heaven in this area.

With the range of intersections and highways there are tons of different light trails you can capture at this location. I love that this spot captures the Los Angeles aesthetic perfectly.

Read my list of night photography tips if you’re new to night photography.

15. California Department of Transportation

Neon lights at the California Department Of Transportation

The California department of transportation with its red neon lights is perfect for late night portrait photoshoots. When driving here you can’t miss the lights and you can usually find parking a block away. A few other photographers showed up here when we were shooting. It seemed like a popular spot for photographers in downtown LA and I would recommend stopping by.

Hollywood Sign by @m.visuals

One of the most iconic L.A. sights is the giant Hollywood sign in the hills. There are a few trails that let you hike behind the sign to get great photos of the skyline and sign.

17. Grimes Canyon Road

DJI Mavic Pro aerial photo above Grimes Canyon Road

You’ll need a car to get to Grimes Canyon road but the scenery is spectacular, especially when the sun goes down. There are a a few spots to shoot from to get shots of the curve in the road; which looks especially great with a long exposure at night.

Just be careful here, the walk to the path to get photos of the road at night is narrow so walk with cation (cars will be driving past you).

LA from helicopter (by Claire Lejeune @ladybaguette)

Many fly with flynyon to get aerial photos of Los Angeles. It can be a bit pricey but it’s a great way to get unique angles of LA.

19. Elysian Park

Palm Trees in Elysian park on Angels Point road (Shot from DJI Mavic Pro)

Elysian Park which is north of Downtown LA has a few great spots to photograph. Plus you can get a great view of the LA skyline without as many tourists as Griffith observatory. This park is one of my favorite scenic places in LA, especially the palm tree lined road called Angels Point Rd.

There is a secret swing in the park as well that overlooks some homes and the highway. It was about a steep 10 minute hike to where the swing is but it’s worth seeing if you’re in Elysian Park.

The Park does close around 9pm so be sure to get out before they close the gate (a truck will drive around to warn you when they are about to close the gate).

20 photos of LA in the 1950s

The post-WWII boom of the 1950s affected almost every corner of the country, from northern Michigan to Southern California. But few places were changed by the economic and cultural shifts as much as Los Angeles. The city grew by 500,000 people, most of whom were drawn to the metropolis for its year-round moderate climate, plethora of thriving industries, and suburban feel.

While LA had been growing steadily since the 19th century, it wasn't yet the jam-packed city we know it to be today. Its various neighborhoods were more separated than they are now, connected by highways and interstates but surrounded by undeveloped land and forests. Residents had all the perks of a major city—a boisterous downtown, a vibrant nightlife scene, plenty of employment options, a culturally and racially diverse population—with the added benefits of smaller communities and plenty of space to build the single-family homes that had become a staple of the American dream.

It's hard to describe exactly what life was like in LA during the decade, or how it felt like both a major city and a small town, so Giggster scoured historical archives to compile a collection of photos that exemplify what life was like in Los Angeles during the 1950s. From shots of daily life to major events like the Academy Awards, these pictures are sure to make you feel a sense of nostalgia, even if you've never been to LA or weren't alive in the mid-20th century.

LA's City Hall can be seen in the distance of this aerial shot. For decades after it was completed—until the late '50s—a city ordinance prohibited the construction of any buildings taller than 150 feet, making City Hall far and away LA's biggest building at the time.

    Grauman's Chinese Theater

Opened in 1927, Grauman's Chinese Theater has likely hosted more film premieres and celebrities than any other theater in LA. In 1950, its financier and namesake, Sid Grauman, died of a heart attack. Today, it's known as the TCL Chinese Theatre and still hosts red carpet movie premieres.

    Olvera Street

Often referred to as "the birthplace of Los Angeles," Olvera Street is LA's oldest street. In the 1930s, the block-long avenue was reinvented as an outdoor mall, complete with vendors selling all sorts of Mexican and Mexican-American items as an homage to some of the area's earliest settlers.

    A historic heatwave

In 1955, LA experienced one of its worst heat waves in recorded history—for eight consecutive days in late August and early September, temperatures reached highs well over 100 degrees. Desperate for some relief, Angelenos flocked to the beaches, including the Santa Monica beach (pictured above) where the archives record some 300,000 people took a dip in the Pacific.

    Dolphin's of Hollywood

One of the most famous record shops in America, Dolphin's of Hollywood was open 24 hours a day, had live DJs spinning records in the front window, and had both its own record label and radio station. The shop's founder, John Dolphin, was a Black man, but his store became a haven for music lovers of all races, much to the chagrin of 1950s cops who were attempting to enforce Jim Crow laws.

Muscle Beach, in Santa Monica, reached the zenith of its popularity in the 1950s, with folks from all over the world coming to watch its acrobats and bodybuilders do their thing. Here, a group of men and women show off their impressive skills on the area's dedicated platform.

    MacArthur Park

MacArthur Park (whose lake is pictured here) has long been a center of LGBTQ+ life in Los Angeles. In the 1950s, it was a popular cruising location, and one such encounter (that went horribly wrong) sparked a legal case that got national attention.

    A drive-in diner

Drive-in restaurants were all the rage in the 1950s, and at one point Simon's Coffee Shops dominated the LA drive-in scene. The restaurants, which offered everything from coffee to spaghetti, served patrons both outside in their cars and inside at the circular counters.

Most folks are familiar with Grauman's Chinese Theater, but far fewer know about Grauman's first foray into the movie palace world—the Egyptian Theater. Built in 1922, and the site of the very first movie premiere, the theater is now owned by Netflix (which is giving it a long overdue restoration). Here a woman buys a ticket at the location's old outdoor box office.

    Walt Disney Concert Hall

Walt Disney Hall is an impressive architectural structure, so photographs against its background are very spectacular. Walt Disney Concert Hall impresses with its design: huge steel blocks, which seem to be about to part in different directions, create a striking effect.

The fantasy of the architect Frank Gehry was also reflected in the interior decoration: what is even an organ with pipes sticking out in different directions! nine0003 Photo: instagram.com by noelso Photo: instagram.com by warrencorales Photo: instagram.com by lindederickx Photo: instagram.com by catiasander Photo: instagram.com by iandavidklein nine0014 Photo: instagram.com by californianativegirl 2

    Bradbury Building

The house in downtown Los Angeles was built by order of millionaire Lewis Bradbury, but the businessman did not live to see its completion. As a result, the building was named after its owner. Now it has the status of a national historical monument.

An ordinary house from the outside impresses with its interior: narrow corridors, low ceilings, secret passages are everywhere. There are also many steep staircases with oak steps and wrought iron railings. In a word, there are more than enough outstanding locations for photographs. nine0003 Photo: instagram.com by sagotici Photo: instagram.com by tantoporconocer Photo: instagram.com by aqsa_c Photo: instagram.com by itslittlelily Photo: instagram.com by hakha123 nine0014 Photo: instagram.com by elogibs 3

It is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places and is one of the most popular locations in downtown Los Angeles. The interior of the theater, made in the French Baroque style, impresses with its beauty and grandeur. We advise you to be sure to capture the view of the building both outside and inside. nine0003 Photo: instagram.com by modernwoman_vintages Photo: instagram.com by jasperdejesus Photo: instagram.com by sugarandcyanide Photo: instagram.com by carriegenzel Photo: instagram.com by midnight_the_stars_and nine0014 Photo: instagram.com by smartrf 4

    TCL Chinese Theater

TCL Chinese Theater Built in 1927 by impresario Sid Grauman, the theater is part of the Hollywood and Highland Center on Hollywood Boulevard.

From the outside, the building really resembles a Chinese pagoda: the entrance to it is guarded by a huge dragon and two watchdogs. Many elements of the exterior and interior were brought from China or made by Chinese craftsmen. It is always very crowded here, but there are definitely chances to take a good photo. nine0003 Photo: instagram.com by xander7878 Photo: instagram.com by lynzcsmall Photo: instagram.com by above_the_light Photo: instagram.com by tastylatours Photo: instagram.com by jay_kardec nine0014 Photo: instagram.com by yugo12to3373 5

    Hollywood Bowl

The massive Hollywood Bowl stands against the backdrop of the Hollywood Hills and the Hollywood sign. Its main features are its amphitheater-like design and excellent acoustics.

Since 1922, performances by top stars (The Beatles, Depeche Mode, Linkin Park and others), classical music concerts and performances have been held here. Hundreds of performances a year in the concert hall are given by the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Concert ticket prices range from $1 to $100. All in all, we highly recommend coming here. nine0003 Photo: instagram.com by mathewimaging Photo: instagram.com by cbohland Photo: instagram.com by b.radster Photo: instagram.com by edithhoganphotography Photo: instagram.com by eatmypixiedust nine0014 Photo: instagram. com by lesliewhoaaa 6

    Hollywood Sign

Large white letters HOLLYWOOD in the Hollywood Hills were installed in 1923 for advertising purposes, but subsequently gained wide popularity and starred in more than a dozen films, becoming a symbol of the US film industry. The sign is located on the southern slope of Mount Lee at an altitude of 491 m above sea level. It is 110 meters long and 14 meters high. nine0003

The sign has no address as it cannot be reached by car or public transport. But you can still see the letters: they are clearly visible from the Griffith Observatory, Mulholland Drive and the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue. Basically, being in L.A. and not to take a photo against the background of this world-famous sign - something from the category of fantasy.

    LACMA Street Light Monument

More than 200 street lights put together are the hallmark of the Los Angeles Museum of Art. To see, touch or walk among them, you do not have to buy a ticket. But you will have to fight for the perfect photo - there are a lot of people who want to take a picture. Come forty minutes before sunset. So you can take three shots at once: in the rays of the setting sun, when the lanterns light up and the sky turns lilac, and at night.

Burger In-N-Out (9149 S Sepulveda Blvd, Los Angeles)

The most photogenic eatery. It is only five minutes from the airport, so while you are eating potatoes, at least five planes will fly over your heads. Come here early in the morning or an hour before sunset and wait for the transatlantic liner.

    Griffith Observatory

Famous from the movie La La Land, the Griffith Observatory is beautiful at sunset and at dusk. Don't want to waste an hour looking for a parking space? Come two hours before. But the best view is from above. There is only one way up the mountain - walk 20 minutes at a fast pace and you will say “Thank you!” to me. The observatory is located on the southern slope of Mount Hollywood. From here you have a magical view of downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood and the Pacific Ocean. nine0003

    Manhattan Beach Pier

Walk between the Manhattan Beach Pier and catch the rays of the setting sun. Beautiful photos can be taken even on Nokia 3310. This beach is much less known than Venice, so there are not so many people here. There are also very photogenic houses on the shore.

    Charmed house

Shot with a house from the series "Charmed" - a guaranteed hit in the top! You can hype at: 1329 Carroll Ave, Los Angeles, CA . I advise you to come there at about nine in the morning: it's still not so hot, and passers-by will not interfere with taking photos.

    Walt Disney Concert Hall

The most unpublished location is through the looking glass of Walt Disney Concert Hall. Climb up the stairs and go around the building in a circle. Shoot strictly in sunny weather from 10:00 to 12:00. nine0003

    Letters Venice

Venice of California is an area in western Los Angeles. The famous Venice Beach is also located there. The legendary Venice letters are photogenic at night and at sunset. Arrive early - you will have time to reach the rescue booth painted in all the colors of the rainbow.

    Hollywood Sign

The familiar Hollywood sign in the Hollywood Hills can be photographed from above and capture the edges of the letters. Three years ago, after 500 meters of the track, I came across a snake, so I found a safer place to shoot: Canyon Lake Dr, Los Angeles, CA

. So take a bottle of water with you and head out to take the picture that is a must for any traveler.

    Santa Monica Beach
