There are three main types of lightbulbs: incandescent, fluorescent, and LED, so let’s take a closer look at each to help you find the best one for you.

Incandescent

Incandescent lights were extremely popular in the days of film. They are still used in the movie industry, but many countries outside the US have banned these styles of lights!

They have been banned due to the high amount of energy they waste.

These lightbulbs are still available to buy in the US. They come in a range of different wattages and prices, with some of the higher watts costing anywhere from $4,000!

Generally, the 300-500 watt bulbs are relatively inexpensive, making them a budget-friendly option.

The bulbs are a bright and clean light, and because of this, you only need one in your softbox compared to 4 or 5 LED’s to get the same level of brightness.

However, they get very hot due to the high wattage, so you need to be careful when using them. Incandescent bulbs do not last very long. Some of the larger 100w bulbs will give roughly 20 hours of light.

What’s the difference between daylight and regular bulbs?

It is done through color temperature, measured in kelvins (K). Daylight bulbs start with a higher color temperature of 4600K and range up to 6500K. With the sun’s color temperature sitting at 5600K, you can purchase bulbs hotter than the sun!

Although photographers today have many lighting options for their studio, constant light is the most convenient and logical solution for beginners, as well as for those who, in addition to photographs, are also going to shoot video.

What is permanent lighting? This is any light fixture that is left on for long periods of time. It could be a table lamp, an overhead light, or even a flashlight. In terms of photography, constant light is a constantly on artificial light source that we use during shooting to provide the light pattern we need. However, you can use it with various modifiers.

Another type of lighting is pulsed. It is activated for a short period of time when the photographer takes a picture. The flash fires when you release the shutter, quickly illuminating the subject, and then turns off. Sources of pulsed light, as well as constant ones, can also be used with various modifiers.

Pros and cons of constant lighting

Beginning studio photographers are better off using constant light to immediately see the effects of lighting.

Benefits of permanent lighting:

You can immediately see the lighting effect.
Suitable for both photos and videos.
Low cost basic sets.

By moving the light fixture around the object, you can see what the resulting image will look like. Continuous light is also useful when photographing small children or people who blink a lot - it provides a more relaxed environment without producing sudden and strong flashes of light.

Another important advantage is that constant light is suitable for video recording. Therefore, if you plan to shoot not only photos, but also videos in your studio, you need a constant light source.

Finally, the basic permanent lighting kit will be cheaper than the basic flashing kit (we are talking only about basic kits, the cost per power for flashing is lower - we will talk about this later).

Also a number of photographers find the quality of constant light to be more pleasant, although this is a very subjective point.

All of these factors make constant lighting a great option for beginner photographers and those who shoot both photos and videos.

However, constant light has a number of drawbacks.

Disadvantages of continuous lighting (compared to pulsed):

Power.
Most instruments require a permanent power supply.
Some types of appliances can become very hot.
Impossibility to "freeze" the movement of the subject.

First of all, basic permanent light kits are usually not powerful enough. And, in general, pulsed sources provide more light output than constant ones at the same cost and/or the same size. Therefore, a constant source of illumination of the same power as a pulsed one, other things being equal, will cost more.

Secondly, constant light requires a constant power source, and therefore usually such devices operate from the mains. LED constant light sources are improving, and some of them can already be battery operated, but usually this is not the case for very powerful devices. Thus, for outdoor work in most cases, a battery-powered pulsed light is better suited.

Also constant light generates more heat (due to being on all the time) and lamps can get hot which can make models uncomfortable. Due to overheating, the lamps can turn off and burn out. All this, first of all, concerns halogen lamps (more on this below), but it is worth keeping this fact in mind.

Finally, constant light cannot freeze motion as effectively as a flash. You'll need a light source powerful enough to light up the scene enough that you can use a fast shutter speed in the 1/1000 range to freeze motion - a pulsed light source will make this easier.

For still images and photographs of any static subject, this won't really matter, as you don't need to use stop motion shutter speeds. In general, both flash and constant light are suitable for any type of photography (but only constant light is suitable for video), except, of course, for genres associated with objects that cannot be lit on their own - sports, landscapes and wildlife. Of course, if power is your priority (for example, if you want to overpower daylight) and portability, then it is better to choose a switching source. For other tasks, constant light is also suitable.

Power

The power of a light fixture is affected by its power - the higher it is, the more you can illuminate the object. At the same time, it is not so easy to accurately predict how much light you will receive from a particular source - some companies measure power in watts, others in lumens. They also use different distances for their tests, so usually the numbers in the description are just a general idea. Therefore, the best option to find out how well this or that device shines is to look at its work live or find a photo / video review.

It should be noted that in terms of power, more is not always better. There are times when you don't need a lot of light. For example, if you are in a fairly dark room and do not want to overexpose everything, you need less power. So don't buy the biggest and most powerful light right away, especially if you're working in a small space.

Due to the lower constant light output, sometimes you may need to shoot at slower shutter speeds (so as not to drive up the ISO). Then a tripod may also be needed to get a sharper image.

Color temperature and color rendering index

All light sources can be measured in terms of color temperature based on the Kelvin scale, which typically ranges from 1000K to 10000K for practical use. The lower this number, the warmer the color (1000K - candlelight) and the higher the number, the colder the color (10000K - light blue sky). Color Rendering Index (CRI) is another important indicator when choosing lighting. It measures the ability of a light source to accurately display the colors of illuminated objects, compared to an ideal or natural light source. The higher the number, the more accurate colors you will get in your images. For more accurate color reproduction, choose sources with a CRI of 90 or higher.

Continuous lighting types

Halogen lighting is one of the most affordable studio lighting options. These are incandescent bulbs that create a nice, warm hue on the subject. At the same time, such lamps heat up quite strongly, so when using them, special care should be taken. This also leads to the fact that for powerful sources it is necessary to use special heat-resistant light modifiers.

For subject shooting of small objects, you can choose the FST F-002 halogen illuminator, equipped with a 50 W light bulb. The illuminator produces a directional beam of warm light (3200K) and its compact size makes it easy to move around the subject.

Falcon Eyes QL-500BW Halogen Illuminator

For larger objects, the 500W Falcon Eyes QL-500BW Halogen Illuminator is suitable.

Fluorescent (fluorescent) illuminators are a great alternative to halogen lamps. They are more in line with daylight in terms of color rendering index and much cooler in terms of color temperature. Also, compared to halogen lamps, they are characterized by lower power consumption and heating. Compared to LED lamps, which we will discuss below, fluorescent sources have a lower color rendering index on average.

The main disadvantage of such devices is that you will have to pay well for powerful sources.

The power of the device is 48W, which provides a luminous flux of 5280 lumens with a color rendering index of over 95. In this illuminator, 224 LEDs work with a “warm” temperature of 3200K and another 224 with a “cold” 5600K. The kit comes with a mirror, which will be especially convenient for vloggers.

Lighting kits

Before buying studio lighting, you need to determine how many lights you need.

The number of sources is determined by how you want to illuminate the subject and background. For more dramatic lighting, you can get by with just one light source, using a collapsible reflector to bounce light off the main source to fill in the shadows.

A set of two lights will be a good starting point - one light will be the key light and the second light can be used in different ways, such as fill, background or outline.

The idea is to start with one source and gradually add more to it. The more lights you add, the brighter your image will be. The brightness will also be affected by the location and intensity of the sources.

Raylab Solar 3B Continuous Fluorescent Light Kit

Even three lights give you enough options for creative use of light. The Raylab Solar 3B continuous light kit includes three fluorescent fixtures, each with five 32-watt lamps.
